Chapter 148 - Chapter 149: Gone

The world seemed to stop.

"It's Nora."

My hands clenched instantly.

"What about her?"

Victor looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

"It's bad."

Fear slammed into my chest.

"Victor."

His voice lowered.

"She's missing."

For a moment, I couldn't process the words.

Missing.

Not injured.

Not delayed.

Missing.

"No."

The word escaped before I could stop it.

"No, that's impossible."

Victor handed me the phone.

It was Nora's security chief.

His voice shook.

"Miss Karev, she left the office thirty minutes ago."

"And?"

"We lost contact shortly after."

My heartbeat thundered.

"What do you mean you lost contact?"

"The vehicle was found abandoned."

Cold terror spread through me.

"Where is she?"

Silence.

That silence was the worst answer.

Because it meant nobody knew.

I grabbed my coat immediately.

"We're finding her."

Kael's father stood.

"So are we."

I turned sharply.

"Why would I trust you?"

His expression remained calm.

"Because whoever took her isn't working for us."

Victor nodded slowly.

"I believe him."

That surprised me.

"You're sure?"

"No."

He paused.

"But this feels wrong."

Wrong.

The attacks before now had been pressure.

Calculated.

Controlled.

This felt different.

Messy.

Personal.

Dangerous.

Within an hour, we were reviewing security footage.

The screen showed Nora leaving the building.

Looking normal.

Relaxed.

Unaware.

Then a black SUV appeared.

Nothing unusual.

Until Nora stopped walking.

Victor froze the footage.

"Zoom in."

The image sharpened.

My stomach dropped.

Someone was standing beside the SUV.

A woman.

Only partially visible.

But I knew that posture.

That hair.

That silhouette.

No.

No.

No.

The room suddenly felt too small.

Victor looked at me carefully.

"Lena…"

My voice barely worked.

"That's her."

Nobody asked who.

Because they already knew.

My mother.

The woman everyone believed had disappeared years ago.

The woman was connected to every secret.

The woman standing at the centre of a war nobody understood.

She was alive.

And she had taken Nora.

My legs nearly gave out.

Victor caught my arm before I stumbled.

"Steady."

I looked back at the screen.

Hoping I was wrong.

Praying I was wrong.

But deep inside, I knew.

A second video appeared.

Different angle.

Better quality.

The woman's face became visible for less than two seconds.

Two seconds were enough.

Nora recognised her immediately.

The footage showed it clearly.

Shock.

Recognition.

Then she willingly stepped closer.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Which meant Nora knew who she was.

My chest tightened painfully.

"Why would she take her?"

Nobody answered.

Because nobody had the answer.

Then Kael's father leaned forward.

His eyes narrowed.

"Wait."

"What?"

He pointed toward another figure exiting the SUV.

Male.

Tall.

Familiar.

Victor's face darkened.

"Impossible."

"What?" I demanded.

He stared at the screen.

Then quietly said:

"Hadrian."

The room exploded into silence.

The supposedly dead son.

The man my mother once loved.

The ghost haunts every secret.

Alive.

Standing beside her.

My pulse pounded.

Years of lies were shattered in seconds.

My mother was alive.

Hadrian was alive.

And somehow they had Nora.

But why?

Then another realisation hit me.

If they wanted leverage, they would have taken me.

Not Nora.

Which meant this wasn't about pressure.

This wasn't about business.

This wasn't even about revenge.

It was about Nora.

Specifically Nora.

The thought terrified me.

Because it meant there was something about my sister I still didn't know.

Suddenly my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

My hands shook as I answered.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a voice came through.

Soft.

Familiar.

A voice I hadn't heard in years.

"Lena."

The world stopped.

Tears immediately filled my eyes.

Because no matter how much pain she caused—

I knew that voice.

"Mum."

Silence.

Then she spoke again.

"I'm sorry."

My heart broke.

Anger.

Relief.

Confusion.

Grief.

Everything collided inside me at once.

"Where is Nora?"

Another pause.

"She's safe."

"Put her on the phone."

"I can't."

My voice hardened instantly.

"Then tell me where she is."

"No."

The softness disappeared from her tone.

"Not yet."

Fear returned immediately.

"What do you want?"

The answer came quietly.

"The truth."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone wants the truth."

"No," she said.

"Everyone wants their version of it."

Silence followed.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"Nora is the key."

My breath caught.

"The key to what?"

A pause.

Then four words.

"The thing your father hid."

The call ended.

And for several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody breathed.

Because one terrifying reality had become clear.

My father had hidden something so important…

People were willing to fake deaths.

Start wars.

Destroy companies.

And kidnap the family.

Just to find it.

And somehow, Nora was connected to it.

What do you think Nora knows that even she doesn't realise she knows? And can Lena really trust her mother after all these years?

The world seemed to stop.

"It's Nora."

My hands clenched instantly.
