Chapter 44 - The Night the Veil Cracked

The first scream came from above. Not from the town. Not from the returned. From inside the council hall itself. Everyone froze. The sound echoed through the staircase leading toward the surface. A man's scream. Sharp. Sudden. Cut off abruptly. Silence followed.

Aurora's stomach tightened. Darian immediately reached for his sword. Gideon turned toward the stairs. "What was that?" No one answered. Then came another scream. Closer. Followed by the sound of running feet. Something crashed overhead. Wood splintered. Glass shattered. The council hall was under attack. Bramwell's face lost what little color remained. "No." The old man staggered backward. "No, they shouldn't be here."

Caelum smiled. The expression made Aurora's blood run cold. He hadn't moved. Hadn't lifted a finger. Yet somehow the chaos above felt connected to him. Not commanded. Welcomed. The ancient being slowly turned his head toward the ceiling. Listening. Enjoying. "They're early."

Lucien's expression darkened. "You planned this." Caelum laughed. "You give me too much credit." Another crash shook the chamber. This time dust poured from the ceiling. The screams multiplied. Dozens now. Council members. Townspeople. Panic.

Aurora was already moving toward the staircase. "Elara." The name escaped before she realized she'd spoken. Gideon's eyes widened. The same thought had reached him. Their sister. She wasn't here. She was still somewhere in town. Outside. Alone. Darian swore. "We need to get back." Lucien immediately stepped forward. "You're not safe up there." Aurora rounded on him. "Neither is my sister and mother."

For a moment neither moved. Then Lucien stepped aside. The decision surprised her. His silver eyes remained fixed on hers. "Then don't waste time." Another scream echoed from above. Aurora ran. The others followed.

The staircase shook beneath their feet as they climbed. The deeper darkness of the chamber gave way to flickering orange light. Fire. The smell hit them first. Smoke. Burning wood. The council hall. Aurora's pulse quickened. By the time they reached the surface the building was already falling apart.

The main chamber had become chaos. Broken furniture covered the floor. Windows had shattered. Council members were fleeing in every direction. Some were bleeding. Others were desperately trying to barricade doors. And standing among them the returned. Dozens of them. Their faces were familiar. Shopkeepers. Farmers. Children. Neighbors. The dead. Their smiles were gone. That frightened Aurora more than the smiles had. Now their expressions were empty. Purposeful. Focused.

One of them grabbed a fleeing council member. The man screamed. Not because he was attacked. Because the returned simply touched his forehead. The councilman immediately froze. His eyes widened. Then he began walking. Calmly. Quietly. Joining them. Aurora stopped. "What" The Veil pulsed violently. The answer came instantly. The returned weren't killing people. They were changing them. A wave of cold swept through her body. This was worse. Much worse.

Darian saw it too. "We need to leave." A returned woman turned toward them. Then another. Then another. Soon dozens of pale eyes fixed on Aurora. The room became silent. The returned knew exactly who she was. The Guardian. The Veil. The final obstacle. Aurora felt the pressure immediately. The Veil tightened around her consciousness. Warning. Danger. Run. Then every returned person in the room took a step forward simultaneously. The sight was horrifying. Not because they moved quickly. Because they moved together. Perfectly together. One will. One purpose. One direction. Toward her.

"Move!" Darian shouted. The first returned lunged. Aurora reacted instinctively. The Veil erupted from her. Silver threads exploded outward. The air itself seemed to tear apart. The nearest returned was thrown backward into a wall. The impact shattered stone. The room erupted into motion. Dozens surged forward. Darian met them head-on. His sword flashed through the air. Gideon grabbed a fallen lantern and hurled it across the room. Flames erupted. The returned ignored the fire. Ignored the injuries. Ignored everything. They only wanted Aurora.

The realization hit hard. Caelum wasn't interested in the council. He wasn't interested in the town. He wanted the Veil. And Aurora carried it. A deafening roar shook the valley. Everyone froze. Even the returned. Aurora felt the ground shift beneath her feet. The Veil screamed. Not a warning. Pain.

The town itself was changing. She rushed toward the shattered window. The sight outside stole her breath. The cracks surrounding the valley had widened. Entire streets were collapsing. Blue light spilled upward from beneath the earth. Buildings leaned dangerously. Church bells rang wildly without human hands touching them. And through the chaos thousands of returned townspeople walked toward the center of the valley. A procession. A pilgrimage. A gathering. All moving toward the council hall. Toward Caelum.

The valley wasn't falling apart. It was converging. Aurora felt genuine fear. Not for herself. For everyone. Because suddenly she understood. This wasn't the beginning. It was the culmination of something centuries in the making.

"Aurora!" Gideon's voice snapped her back. She turned. Her blood ran cold. Darian had been separated. The crowd of returned had swallowed him. For one terrible moment she saw him fighting. Then he disappeared completely. "Darian!" No answer. The returned surged between them. Blocking the view. Blocking the path. Blocking everything.

And somewhere beneath the council hall Caelum laughed. The sound rolled through the valley. Warm. Beautiful. Terrifying. And for the first time since accepting the Binding Aurora feared she might already be too late.
