Chapter 61 - Vanguard of the Deep

The jagged cliffs of the Gorgon's Cleft fell away behind them, opening up into a sight that made both Azeal and Vaelora halt in sheer awe. Before them stretched the Midnight Ocean—an endless, ink-black sea that roared under a canopy of heavy, violet clouds. The waves crashed violently against the obsidian shore, sending up sprays of silver foam that glowed faintly in the dark.

"Swimming across this is suicide," Azeal said, his voice straining over the roaring wind as he scanned the empty horizon. "And with Draeven's blockades on land, we are trapped between the rocks and a dead sea."

Vaelora adjusted the pack containing the Book of Origins on her back, her sharp eyes scanning the coastline. "Look there, Azeal. Shadows on the water."

Out of the thick sea mist, a massive silhouette emerged. It was a colossal warship, its hull forged from dark ironwood and reinforced with heavy starmetal plates. Three towering masts held tattered but proud crimson sails that caught the freezing wind. This was no ordinary merchant vessel; it was a ghost of the old kingdom's navy, built for cosmic warfare.

As the heavy ship anchored near a natural stone pier, a dozen heavily armed figures appeared at the railing. These weren't Draeven's mindless shadow-wraiths. They wore the battle-worn armor of the outer rim rebels.

At the front stood their leader—CaptainGideon. He was a tall, rugged drazhin with a face lined by scars of war, a silver-trimmed tricorn hat resting tightly on his head, and a massive cutlass strapped to his waist. His piercing grey eyes locked instantly onto the Star Fire Sword in Azeal's hand, and then onto Vaelora's royal posture.

"Lower the gangplank!" Gideon bellowed to his crew, his deep voice cutting through the storm.

He stepped down onto the stone pier, looking closely at the travelers. Slowly, a look of profound recognition washed over his weathered face. Gideon dropped to one knee, driving his cutlass into the dark sand. "Word reached the outer borders that the son of king aetheron and the bearer of the Star Fire Blade had survived the Shadow Abyss... but I did not dare to believe it until now."

Azeal stepped forward, helping Gideon to his feet. "We are trying to bypass Draeven's northern armies to reclaim the Capital, Captain. But the land is blocked."

"Then the sea shall be your highway, Prince," Gideon said, a fierce, determined grin breaking through his rough beard. "I am Captain Gideon of The Sovereign's Wake. Draeven Zareth executed my family and hunted my crew into these outlaw waters. We have been waiting for a reason to fight back. We will carry you to the Capital's secret sea-gates, and my cannons will help you bleed any monster Draeven throws our way."

Vaelora stepped forward, looking at the brave crew members who were already preparing the deck. "The Midnight Ocean is treacherous, Captain. Draeven has awakened things in the deep."

"Let them come, Princess," Gideon said, gesturing for them to board his grand vessel. "My men are born of the salt and steel. We do not fear the dark."

As Azeal and Vaelora stepped onto the wooden deck of The Sovereign's Wake, the crew raised the heavy iron anchor. The massive ship cut into the black waves, sailing directly into the heart of the uncharted ocean. The alliance was forged, and the long journey home had finally found its wings on the water—but beneath the roaring waves, a colossal shadow was already beginning to stir.
