Chapter 56 - The Blind Strike

The screech of the Basilisk was a deafening, metallic rattle that shook the very roots of the primordial trees. Though the Star Fire Sword was buried deep within its underbelly, the monster was far from finished. In its thrashing agony, the massive serpent coiled and slammed its heavy tail against the earth, creating a miniature earthquake that knocked Azeal off his feet and threw him across the dark, mossy ground.

The blade ripped out of the wound as he fell, leaving a trail of black, smoking blood on the forest floor. Azeal winced, the sheer force of the impact rattling his bones, though Chiron's magic kept his ribs from shattering again.

"Azeal!" Vaelora screamed.

The serpent turned its massive, crowned head toward the sound of her voice. Furious and blinded by pain, its bulbous yellow eyes blazed with a terrifying intensity. It opened its jaws, preparing to unleash a torrent of concentrated, flesh-melting acid directly at her.

Azeal scrambled to his knees, his vision blurring from the thick smoke. He couldn't look up—one glance at those glowing yellow eyes would still mean instant death. But he could see the creature's massive shadow looming over Vaelora in the reflection of a nearby pool of dark water.

He had to end this now.

"Father, guide my hand," Azeal whispered, gripping the hilt of the Star Fire Sword with both hands. He closed his eyes completely, surrendering his senses to the ambient hum of the celestial blade. He stopped trying to see the beast with his eyes; instead, he felt the cold, dark void where the creature stood, contrasting against the warm cosmic energy of his weapon.

With a roar that echoed the ancient kings of Aetheron, Azeal channeled every remaining ounce of his lineage into the sword. The runes didn't just glow—they detonated into a blinding, sun-like radiance. The light was so pure and piercing that it sliced right through the thick, suffocating fog of the Shrouded Woods, illuminating the entire dark canopy.

The Basilisk, a creature born of deep subterranean darkness, let out a pitiful whimper as the holy starlight struck its sensitive, death-dealing eyes. The intense, divine brilliance instantly burned its retinas, shattering its deadly gaze forever. The yellow fire in its eyes died out, replaced by smoking black ash.

Seizing the moment of the beast's disorientation, Azeal leaped forward blindly. Guided by the sheer instinct of a trained warrior, he drove the blazing Star Fire Sword upward, plunging the steel straight through the soft flesh beneath the serpent's jaw and pushing it all the way up into its brain.

The cosmic fire exploded inside the monster's skull. For a second, the entire silhouette of the giant serpent glowed from within with a brilliant white light, before its massive obsidian scales crumbled into nothingness. The Basilisk dissolved into a harmless pile of dark dust, swept away by the sudden, cool mountain wind.

The blinding light of the sword slowly faded back into a gentle, rhythmic pulse. Azeal opened his eyes, panting heavily, his body covered in soot but uninjured.

Vaelora dropped the protective golden barrier she had raised from the Book of Origins and rushed into his arms, trembling slightly but holding him tight. "You did it," she breathed against his neck. "You fought it completely blind."

Azeal wrapped his arms around her waist, holding her close as his breathing gradually slowed down. "I wasn't blind," he whispered softly, kissing the top of her head. "I could feel your light. That was all I needed."

They stood together in the newly cleared clearing of the forest. The suffocating fog was gone, burned away by the starlight. Ahead of them, the ancient path lay open and clear, winding downwards toward the mysterious valley where the next leg of their long, dangerous journey to the Capital awaited. Draeven Zareth's second monster had fallen, but both of them knew the Dark King's desperation would only grow.
