Chapter 156 - SHATTERED SOUL

The taxi pulled up to the front steps of a ancient Japanese shrine. Akira paid the driver and stepped out into the quiet night, her steps heavy as she walked toward the main hall. Standing before the sacred altar, she stared up at the statues of the deities, tears streaming silently down her pale, soot-stained cheeks.

She slowly sank to her knees. Bowing her head until her forehead touched the cold stone floor, she closed her eyes, letting her tears soak into the wood below.

"I believe it now..." Akira whispered, her voice cracking with profound grief. "I believe in karma. Everyone reaps what they sow right here in this life. I have received the punishment for my sins, and even though my heart is filled with grievance, I have no right to complain..."

Her sobs echoed through the quiet shrine.

"Just as I stole Naea's family from her... You took mine away from me."

The raw pain in her voice drew the attention of the head priest standing nearby. He turned his head toward her, observing her shattered state with a quiet, solemn expression, but refrained from interrupting her devotion.

Slowly, Akira pushed herself up from the floor. She looked back up at the altar, then down at Naea's silk scarf wrapped tightly around her hand.

Staring at the divine statues through her blurred vision, she cried out, her voice trembling with complete surrender.

"I don't want anything anymore... I don't need power, revenge, or anything else! Just give me back my real family... the one where Naea, Naria, and I were together! Please, God... just give them back to me. I can't live like this without Naea... I can't survive this..."

Her weeping grew louder, ringing through the sacred halls like a desperate prayer for mercy.

Seeing her broken spirit, the old priest finally stepped forward. He didn't offer hollow words or ask for explanations. Walking up to Akira, he gently placed his palm over her head in a silent, comforting blessing.

Feeling the warmth of his hand, Akira closed her eyes. The sound of her crying gradually faded into complete silence, but the tears kept flowing continuously from her eyes a silent, endless river of grief flowing before the altar.

Akira slowly rose to her feet, bowing respectfully before stepping away from the altar. Just as she took her first step toward the exit, the old priest's serene voice echoed behind her.

"You have acknowledged your sins, child," the priest said gently. "Accepting your wrongdoing may not fix the broken pieces of this world, but it brings a spark of peace within your soul. Preserve that peace. Do not let the cruelty of others override the light left inside you."

Akira paused for a fraction of a second, letting his words anchor in her heart, before stepping out into the crisp night air.

Driven by an irresistible pull, Akira made her way to the Sato residence. She didn't dare step inside, nor did she press the doorbell. Instead, she walked over to the edge of the garden, standing quietly like a phantom amidst the manicured lawns, her hollow eyes fixed on the softly lit windows of the house.

Dark clouds rolled in, and a heavy downpour began to drench the city. Cold, biting winds swept through the garden, but Akira didn't move an inch. The freezing rain soaked her clothes and chilled her skin, yet to her numb, broken mind, the weather was completely unfelt.

Hours passed until the rain finally tapered off into a quiet mist.

The front door of the Sato home clicked open. Prosecutor Daisuke stepped out into the night, a triumphant smile adorning his face. Walking right beside him was Naea.

Daisuke's eyes instantly caught the drenched, bleeding figure of Akira standing near the garden boundary. His smile turned mocking, and he opened his mouth to hurl a cruel taunt. But before a single word could escape his lips, Naea gently reached out, placing her hand over his arm and offering him a quiet, firm look silently telling him to stay composed.

Respecting his fiancée's wish, Daisuke held his tongue. He walked over to his parked car, turned toward Naea, and bade her a warm "Good night." Leaning in softly, he pressed a gentle kiss against her cheek before getting into his sedan and driving away into the mist.

Though the gesture felt slightly unnatural and awkward to Naea, she deliberately let the moment linger, ensuring Akira witnessed the comfortable, affectionate bond between her and her future husband.

Seeing Daisuke press his lips against Naea's skin shattered whatever was left of Akira's heart. Yet, placing a heavy stone over her aching chest, she forced her shivering legs to walk toward Naea.

Stopping a few feet away, her voice rasped through the cold air.

"I... I want to see Naria."

Naea's face remained an unreadable mask of ice. Without offering a single word or a glance, she turned on her heel and began walking toward the main entrance of her home.

Desperation tore through Akira's throat. "Until when, Naea?!" she cried out, her voice breaking into a ragged sob. "when will you stop torturing me like this? How long will you refuse to even speak to me?!"

Naea ignored the desperate pleas echoing behind her. She opened the heavy door, stepped inside, and pulled it shut.

Akira stood frozen, watching the locked door. The absolute rejection proved too heavy to bear. Turning her back to the house, she began dragging her drenched, exhausted body away, ready to fade back into the dark ruins of the city.

"mamma.....?"

A tiny, sweet baby voice suddenly cooed from the doorway.

Akira froze mid-step. The simple, innocent sound sent a wave of instant, overwhelming warmth rushing through her cold veins.

Slowly, almost afraid that this too was a cruel hallucination, Akira turned around.

Standing at the open threshold of the illuminated doorway was Naea holding tiny Naria wrapped safely in a warm blanket in her arms.

Hearing tiny Naria's voice, Akira's heart leaped in her chest. She took a step forward, completely drawn toward the open doorway.

Naea looked at Akira standing on the porch drenched from head to toe, her hair plastered to her face, and her clothes dripping cold rainwater onto the wooden deck. A faint flicker of conflict crossed Naea's eyes, but her tone remained icy and distant.

"Get inside."

The voice was cold and clipped, devoid of any warmth. Yet to Akira, it was a lifeline. Without offering a single word of protest or question, Akira quietly stepped across the threshold.

The house was steeped in absolute silence. There were no servants, no guards, no Daisuke only Naea, Naria, and Akira trapped within the quiet walls of the Sato residence.

Naea walked over to the nursery corner, gently setting Naria down in her chair. She then disappeared into the inner hallway, returning a moment later with a dry towel and a fresh set of clothes.

She held them out, her eyes avoiding Akira's gaze. "Go change. You'll freeze."

Akira didn't hesitate. Like a soul entirely devoted to her master's command, she accepted the clothes without a murmur. Whatever Naea instructed, Akira followed instantly devoid of pride, ego, or resistance.

A few minutes later, Akira stepped back out into the living area, wearing the simple dry clothes.

On the dining table, a single plate of food had been placed under a warm cover. The rest of the house was quiet; Naea was nowhere to be seen. Sitting down in the empty dining room, Akira picked up the chopsticks.

She took a small bite, then another forcing herself to chew. But her throat felt tightly constricted by the suffocating weight of guilt and grief. The food felt like dust on her tongue. Unable to force down a third bite, she quietly set the chopsticks back down, leaving the meal untouched.

Pushing herself up from the table, Akira gathered the last shreds of her courage and walked down the dimly lit hallway toward Naea's bedroom.

Akira gently turned the brass handle and pushed the door open, stepping inside without making a sound.

The room was bathed in the soft, warm glow of a nightlight. On the bed, Naea lay fast asleep, holding tiny Naria in her arms. Naria was tucked safely against her mother's chest, both of them breathing in a peaceful, rhythmic harmony.

Akira stood at the threshold for a long moment, afraid that even her breath might disturb the fragile quiet.

Slowly, reverently, she crossed the floor and sank down onto the carpet right beside the bed. She rested her arms on the edge of the mattress, gazing up at Naea's sleeping face.

All the pain, the betrayal, and the chaos of the world outside faded away. Akira just sat there in the dim light, looking at Naea with pure, unadulterated devotion. Her eyes traced every soft line of Naea's face, watching over the girl she loved and the child she cherished silently guarding their sleep through the darkest hours of the night.

The dim light of the nightlamp cast long, soft shadows across the quiet room. Akira remained on her knees by the bedside, her eyes fixed on Naea's peaceful face as she held Naria close. For a brief moment, the suffocating noise of the world had completely faded away.

Then, a faint flutter of white caught her eye.

Lying on the side table, half-hidden under a small lamp, was a single folded document. An inexplicable, instinctual urge surged inside Akira a dark premonition pulling her toward that paper.

Slowly, trying not to make a single sound, Akira reached up and picked up the paper.

She unfolded the document, her eyes scanning down the official letterhead of the Osaka Medical Center until they locked onto the typed summary at the bottom.

PATIENT DIAGNOSIS: EARLY STAGE PREGNANCY (1 WEEK)

STATUS: CONFIRMED

PATIENT NAME: NAEA SATO

ESTABLISHED PATERNITY: DAISUKE OTOME

Akira's breath hitched in her throat. Her mind went completely blank, the words burning into her retinas like hot iron.

She turned her head slowly, looking back at Naea sleeping on the bed. Akira pushed herself up from the floor, standing frozen on the spot in pure, paralyzing shock. Heavy, silent tears spilled over her eyelids, cascading down her pale cheeks a few heavy drops falling onto the paper itself.

Naea was pregnant. With Daisuke's child.

The last fragile thread holding Akira's sanity together snapped in half. Trembling violently, Akira carefully placed the paper back onto the side table, exactly where she had found it.

She backed away from the bed, turned around, and walked out of the room. She passed through the silent hallway, opened the front door, and stepped out into the dark night, leaving the Sato residence behind forever.

Every step felt like walking through thick, heavy glass. Akira could barely expand her lungs; it felt as though an invisible hand was violently crushing her chest, choking the oxygen out of her system. Her heart thundered erratically, then slowed down to a faint, hollow beat.

Driven purely by unconscious instinct, she dragged her body back toward her old neighborhood. Her fractured mind had completely suppressed the reality of the disaster she forgot about the high-intensity explosion, the fallen concrete, and the loss of her family.

When she finally arrived, there was no home waiting for her. There was only a jagged, blackened crater of smoke and twisted rebar.

Akira stood at the edge of the rubble, her eyes lifeless. Her body simply refused to function any longer. Her knees buckled, and she collapsed face-first onto the cold asphalt, her consciousness completely fading into blackness.

Fortunately, a kindly neighbor who had returned to the perimeter to search through his own belongings spotted the motionless figure lying in the street. Recognizing Akira, he rushed over, checked her faint pulse, and hurriedly carried her away to his nearby temporary shelter.

Back in the quiet bedroom of the Sato house, the rain softly tapped against the window glass.

On the side table, bathed in the faint nightlight, the white medical document lay still a silent, fatal decree declaring that Naea was one week pregnant with Daisuke's child, sealing Akira's fate into absolute darkness.
