Chapter 31 - CHAPTER 31

THE WAITED HOUSE

The evening sky had slowly surrendered to the quiet embrace of twilight as the Malhotra estate settled into its usual calm. The soft glow of the garden lights illuminated the pathways connecting the different villas, while a cool breeze rustled through the rows of maple trees lining the property.

Unlike the busy mornings that revolved around board meetings and deadlines, evenings belonged to the family.

Krishnaveer had just returned from the office. After changing into a simple black sweatshirt and trousers, he walked toward the family lounge, where Raj and Ananya were already waiting.

Raj was lazily tossing a basketball into the air before catching it again.

"You took longer than usual today," Raj commented, balancing the ball on one finger. "Should I assume the board members survived another meeting with you?"

Krish glanced at him before taking a seat.

"They survived."

Raj grinned.

"I'll consider that a successful day."

Ananya couldn't help but smile.

"Poor people."

"They're lucky," Raj replied dramatically. "Imagine having him as your elder brother twenty-four hours a day."

Krish calmly picked up the glass of water placed before him.

"You do."

"And I complain every day."

Before another playful argument could begin, footsteps echoed from the entrance.

The butler bowed politely.

"Young Master... Mr. Rohan Sharma is here."

Krish nodded.

"Send him in."

Within moments, Rohan entered carrying a thick leather folder. His usual confident expression seemed unusually restrained today.

After greeting everyone, he placed the file carefully on the center table.

"I've completed the investigation regarding the property in India."

Raj immediately sat properly.

"So?"

Rohan took a slow breath.

"The villa still legally belongs to the Malhotra family."

Krish silently opened the file.

"There are no ownership disputes. Every legal document remains intact, and all property taxes have been paid regularly."

Raj looked surprised.

"If everything is maintained, then why has nobody been using it?"

Rohan's expression grew serious.

"Because..."

"...no one has been allowed to."

The room fell silent.

Krish slowly lifted his eyes from the file.

"What do you mean?"

"The caretaker refused to hand over the keys."

Raj frowned immediately.

"Refused?"

"He said he was only following your grandfather's final instructions."

Even Ananya, who had been quietly listening until now, straightened in her seat.

"Our grandfather?"

Rohan nodded respectfully.

"Yes."

"He requested that I deliver his exact words to the family."

Krish leaned back slightly.

"Go ahead."

Rohan unfolded another document before reading slowly.

'This villa shall remain closed until the day all my grandchildren return... or choose this home as the place where they reunite as one family.'

'Only then shall its doors be opened once again.'

The words lingered in the room long after Rohan finished reading them.

No one spoke.

Even Raj, who usually found something to joke about in every situation, remained unusually quiet.

The silence felt... heavy.

As though those few lines had opened a forgotten corner of everyone's heart.

Krish lowered his gaze toward the report again.

His expression remained unreadable.

Only his fingers tightened ever so slightly around the edge of the paper.

A faint memory crossed his mind.

An old iron gate.

A pair of warm hands resting on his small shoulders.

Someone calling his name.

Then...

voices.

Crying.

A locked door.

The memory disappeared as quickly as it had arrived.

He couldn't remember anything clearly.

Only the strange ache it always left behind.

Across from him, Raj stared blankly at the floor.

"I don't remember much," he admitted quietly.

"I was probably too young."

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"But... I do remember asking Dad once why we never visited that place again."

He laughed bitterly.

"No one answered me."

Ananya smiled sadly.

"I don't even remember the villa."

She looked toward her brothers.

"I've only seen one old photograph."

"The all of us were standing with Dadaji."

She paused.

"After that..."

"I never saw that photograph again."

The room became silent once more.

Rohan gently cleared his throat.

"There is one more condition."

Everyone looked toward him.

"The caretaker asked me to convey another message."

"He said that your grandfather personally instructed him never to unlock the villa unless one of his children or grandchildren came there themselves."

Raj blinked.

"So... even if we send someone with legal documents..."

"He still won't open it?"

Rohan nodded.

"He said his loyalty wasn't to the property."

"It was to the promise he made."

Raj slowly leaned back against the sofa.

"So..."

"We actually have to go."

Before anyone else could speak, Ananya quietly broke the silence.

"Bhai..."

Krish looked toward her.

"You remember Jess?"

He nodded.

"She and I are already planning to travel to India before the wedding."

She hesitated before continuing.

"If the villa is still in good condition..."

"...maybe I can inspect it personally."

Raj immediately supported the idea.

"That actually makes sense."

He pointed toward Ananya.

"She'll already be there."

"And honestly, if the villa can help Jess and her family, why shouldn't we use it?"

Krish didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at both of his younger siblings.

He could see the excitement in Raj's eyes.

The determination in Ananya's.

And beneath both...

their innocence.

He slowly closed the file.

"No."

The single word surprised both of them.

Ananya looked disappointed.

"But Bhai—"

Krish gently interrupted her.

"I'm not refusing because I doubt your judgment."

His voice remained calm.

"I'm refusing because I don't yet understand what we're stepping into."

He looked directly at her.

"I won't send any of you to another country carrying responsibilities that may involve our family's past."

Ananya lowered her eyes.

She knew that tone.

It wasn't control.

It was concern.

Raj sighed softly.

"So what's the plan?"

Krish turned toward Rohan.

"Arrange a meeting with Father."

"The earliest possible."

Rohan nodded immediately.

"Tomorrow morning?"

"If he's available."

"I'll make the arrangements."

Krish stood from his seat, holding the report in his hand.

"There are too many unanswered questions."

"The villa."

"The caretaker."

"Dadaji's final wish."

"And twenty years of silence."

He looked toward the large window overlooking the dark gardens.

"I want every answer before anyone leaves for India."

Ananya smiled faintly.

This time...

she didn't argue.

She simply nodded.

"I'll wait."

Raj folded his arms dramatically.

"So basically..."

"The verdict of the High Court has been announced."

Krish gave him a side glance.

Raj immediately raised both hands in surrender.

"I'm just translating your CEO language into normal human language."

Even Rohan couldn't suppress a quiet smile.

For a brief moment, the heaviness in the room eased.

But only for a moment.

Because somewhere...

far away in India...

an old villa stood silently beneath the evening sky.

Its gates had remained closed for twenty long years.

Its walls had witnessed laughter...

its corridors had heard tears...

and its rooms still guarded a truth that time had failed to erase.

Very soon...

those doors would open once again.

Not merely to welcome the Malhotra family—

but to awaken the memories that had been waiting patiently behind them.
