Chapter 69 - Chapter 69: Shadow in the Heart

With the departure of the Sand Trio, the Forest of Death plunged into a vacuum of silence.

Naruto was left alone in the center of the crater. As soon as the enemies disappeared, the adrenaline receded, and his body immediately presented the bill. It felt as if unliftable weights had been tied to every bone. Chakra channels burned, meridians pulsed with a dull ache, demanding cooling after the wild use of Qi and the Fox's Chakra.

Naruto knew: somewhere out there, behind the trees, was a source of Sakki. Weak, wavering, but directed at him. He had felt it even during the conversation with Gaara. But even with their departure, it remained.

Don't fall, he ordered himself. Until the situation is resolved, I cannot relax.

The Uzumaki slowly, with creaking joints, lowered himself to the ground, crossing his legs.

"Phew..." he exhaled through clenched teeth.

He closed his eyes and initiated the Small Heavenly Circuit. It was a desperate measure: to gather crumbs of Qi to maintain clarity of mind and be ready for a strike.

"Hey, Sasuke," he rasped without turning his head. "You can come out. They're gone."

Rustling of leaves.

From behind a broken, charred tree trunk, the Uchiha emerged.

Sasuke looked like a ghost. His face was deathly pale, his clothes hung in tatters, and his left arm dangled limply after the overload from Chidori. But the heaviest thing was his gaze. He wasn't looking at Naruto. He was looking at the aftermath.

At the giant furrows in the earth. At the vitrified sand. At the spot where, a minute ago, an S-Rank monster had stood, who had now simply walked away.

A shutter clicked in Sasuke's mind. The puzzle pieces fell into place.

"Again..." he said quietly, almost in a whisper. "It happened again."

Naruto remained silent, continuing to cycle energy.

Sasuke took a step forward, his voice becoming louder, firmer.

"Just like back then, on the bridge in the Land of Waves. You prevented the deaths of Haku and Zabuza. You didn't defeat them with techniques. You broke their ideology. Turned the 'Demon of the Mist,' a ruthless killer, into someone indebted to you."

Sasuke spoke quickly, feverishly, as if afraid of losing the thought.

"It's the same here. Gaara is a monster. The embodiment of madness. Such a threat needs to be destroyed. I tried to kill him myself. Used my strongest technique to pierce his armor..."

He clenched his healthy hand into a fist.

"But you... You defeated the monster, and then just talked to him. And he retreated. He refused to fight on his own."

Sasuke stopped five meters behind Naruto.

"Why didn't you kill him when he lay powerless?" he demanded an answer. "Why, when his team came, did they not try to kill you, but simply left? What did you do to them? How do you make them change sides?"

Naruto sighed heavily. It was hard to speak; every word came with effort.

"I don't make them change sides," he answered hoarsely. "I just show them that there is another Way. To survive, Gaara had to rely only on himself from childhood, which made him believe that strength lies in solitude. I know that feeling. I showed him that it isn't so. People can change, Sasuke, if they genuinely want to."

"'Way'..." the Uchiha spat. "Your philosophical nonsense again."

He took another step. Now, his voice held not only confusion but suspicion.

"Then what about your body? Haku's senbon. That kick from Lee. Orochimaru. Now this Sand Beast. You withstand blows that would turn anyone else into a corpse or a cripple. You even overpowered my Cursed Seal during the preliminaries."

Sasuke's eyes narrowed, a dangerous spark flashing in them.

"Where does this sensory ability, durability, speed, and strength of yours come from? From the Nine-Tails?"

"No," the Uzumaki answered firmly. "The Nine-Tails has nothing to do with it."

"Then what?!" Sasuke roared. "Don't you dare lie to me!"

"Training," Naruto said calmly but weightily. "Discipline. Working the body to its limit every single day. Every day I strive to become stronger than I was yesterday. If you are looking for a magic pill or a secret scroll that will instantly make you stronger... it doesn't exist."

"LIAR!"

Sasuke's scream echoed through the dead forest.

The black patterns of the Seal on his neck flared, reacting to the anger. Orochimaru's poison flooded his blood.

"You're lying to me!" the Uchiha hissed, his face contorted. "'Training'? Don't take me for an idiot! You speak in riddles on purpose. You're trying to keep the secret of your power for yourself because you're afraid! Afraid that if I learn the secret, I will instantly surpass an idiot like you!"

The voice of the Seal in Sasuke's head became deafening.

He is laughing at you. He considers you unworthy. Kill him. Take his secret. Prove that you are stronger.

"You will tell me everything," Sasuke's voice became quiet and terrifying. "Right here and now."

His healthy hand reached for his pouch.

"Or else..."

The air between them thickened.

Naruto stopped breathing. His back, visible through the holes in his jacket, turned to stone.

The Sakki, which had previously smoldered like an ember, flared into a fire. Sharp, cold killing intent, directed precisely at the back of his head. Emanating from a friend.

Naruto slowly opened his eyes. There was no fear in them. There was icy blue.

He turned to acknowledge the movement.

"Or else what?" Naruto asked. His voice was quiet, but a threat was audible within it. "You'll try to kill me, Sasuke?"

The Uchiha's hand froze on the handle of a kunai.

"You think I can't?" Sasuke hissed, fighting the tremor in his fingers. "You can barely hold yourself up. You're empty."

"True. I am empty," Naruto agreed. "But ask yourself: is this your desire? Or is this the collar the Snake put on you?"

"Shut up! Don't you dare talk to me about the Seal again!"

Sasuke clenched his teeth until they ground together. The kunai was halfway out of its sheath. The black patterns on his neck pulsed, demanding action.

"I don't care about anything!" he shouted, his voice cracking. "I only need power! Any kind! I am ready to become anything, just to kill him!"

Naruto suddenly fell silent. His gaze looked at Sasuke with frightening, icy clarity.

"'I don't have a dream, because I will make it a reality...'" Naruto uttered quietly.

Sasuke froze. His hand faltered. Those words...

"'I will restore my clan... and kill a certain man,'" Naruto finished. His memory, structured by meditation, reproduced Sasuke's intonation from that very meeting on the roof with frightening accuracy.

The words hit the Uchiha harder than a slap. It was his oath. His essence.

Naruto looked him straight in the eye.

"Do you still remember that, Sasuke? Remember who you are?"

The Uzumaki nodded at the trembling hand holding the kunai.

"'Restore the clan.' Tell me, are your actions right now the foundation on which you want to revive the greatness of the Uchiha? Is this the act of an elite, or a coward looking for the easy way?"

"I..." Sasuke opened his mouth, but his arguments turned to dust.

"You want to kill 'that man,'" Naruto continued ruthlessly. "But by succumbing to the influence of someone else's power... you won't get any closer to him."

Naruto paused, allowing the meaning of the words to reach his mind.

"Are these truly your thoughts, Sasuke?"

The Uchiha was silent, his fingers gripping the handle tighter.

"Don't cross the line," Naruto finished quietly. "There will be no way back. You will lose not only your team, but yourself."

The air rang with tension. Sasuke stood, torn between his own oath thrown in his face and the "easy path."

Risk it? Is it worth trying? Or...

"SASUKE-KUN! NARUTO!"

A scream shattered the vacuum.

Pakkun flew into the clearing, barking loudly, followed by Sakura running out.

"You're alive!" she screamed, not noticing the murderous aura. "I was so scared! I saw the explosion..."

Pakkun braked sharply, his nose twitching. He shifted his gaze from Naruto to Sasuke.

"Smells like blood..." the pug grumbled, looking at the Uchiha with intelligent, suspicious eyes. "And something else. Rotten."

Sasuke flinched under the ninken's gaze, as if caught red-handed.

The delusion shattered.

Sasuke jerked as if waking from a nightmare. Naruto's gaze, the appearance of Sakura and the ninken, his own thoughts about Itachi—everything mixed together. He sharply yanked his hand away from the pouch. The kunai fell back into the sheath with a clatter.

Sasuke stepped back, beginning to shake from the recoil. He looked at his hand with horror.

Sakura ran up to him, grabbing his shoulders. "Sasuke-kun, are you okay? You're all pale!"

"I..." Sasuke swallowed, trying to return the mask of indifference. He cast a quick, frightened glance at Naruto's back. "I'm fine."

Naruto exhaled slowly. The tension left his shoulders; the monstrous fatigue returned.

He knew this wasn't the end. Sasuke wasn't cured. But today... today the worst was behind them.

Naruto's face smoothed out. He allowed himself a faint but genuine smile. The team was still whole.

"Hey," he called out.

Sasuke and Sakura turned around.

Naruto sat on the ground, reaching his hands out to them.

"Sasuke, Sakura... Mind giving me a hand?" There was no resentment or fear in his voice. Only fatigue and warmth. "I'm not in the best shape right now. Let's go home. The war is probably over by now."

Sakura blinked, wiping away tears, and immediately rushed to him.

"Idiot! Pushed yourself to the limit again?"

She grabbed him under his left arm.

"Hey! Aren't you too heavy! Sasuke-kun, hurry up and help me!"

Sasuke stood motionless. He looked at Naruto's outstretched right hand. At the one he had just wanted to kill. And who was now asking him for help as if nothing had happened.

He knows... Sasuke realized. ...and he calls me anyway?

He couldn't understand it, but he felt an inexplicable gratitude.

Sasuke walked over slowly. He silently offered his shoulder and slung Naruto's arm over himself.

"Idiot," the Uchiha grumbled, but there was no venom in his voice. Only a shared exhaustion.

They lifted Naruto up.

Sasuke and Sakura dragged their exhausted friend through the ruined forest.

Naruto hung on their shoulders, feeling the warmth of their bodies.

Connections, he thought, struggling to hold onto consciousness. They're complicated... but they're worth it.
