For a second, my brain completely refused to process it. The quiet in the room became a ringing silence that made my head spin. I sat frozen on the edge of the couch, my hands still clenched so tightly in my lap that my fingernails dug deep into my palms.
All the tears I had cried the night before, the dangerous hope that had bloomed in my chest, the fantasy of finally escaping my toxic family because I belonged to a powerful Alpha, shattered.
