Chapter 55 - The Floor That Didn’t Get a Chance

The moment they crossed the threshold, the Crystal Cave revealed itself.

It was nothing like Jax expected.

There was no damp stone.

No dripping water.

No suffocating darkness.

The cavern glowed.

Massive crystal formations erupted from the walls and ceiling like frozen lightning, branching through the rock in jagged veins of blue, violet, and pale white mana light. The illumination should have made the cave feel open—

instead, it somehow created deeper shadows.

Bright.

But oppressive.

Beautiful.

But wrong.

The air smelled faintly of minerals and dry stone mixed with something harder to place.

Musk.

Predator.

The cave felt alive.

Not naturally alive.

Aware alive.

Jax stepped forward first.

"Formation Alpha."

The Vixens shifted instantly.

Jax led from the front, Peacemaker resting loosely against one shoulder.

Bunny moved behind him, Earth Breaker held low and ready.

Zee remained centered, already layering low-level defensive enchantments across the group.

Nyxian drifted behind her, Lilith's Kiss coiled lazily around one arm while Echo watched the darkness with glowing eyes.

Llandra sealed the rear, Starpiercer drawn, attention constantly moving.

Nobody spoke after that.

The cave swallowed sound strangely.

Even footsteps seemed muted.

Fifty yards inward—

movement stirred ahead.

A shape detached itself from the darkness.

Low to the ground.

Broad shoulders.

Smooth, unnatural movement.

"Contact," Llandra said calmly.

The creature stepped fully into the crystal light.

A wolf.

Massive.

Its lower jaw had been completely replaced by jagged crystal growths that refracted the cave's light with every movement. Razor-edged shards ground together audibly as it snarled.

Jax raised one hand.

"Llandra."

She already had Starpiercer drawn.

"Meet our guest."

Then he smiled faintly.

"Light it up."

The arrow launched like a meteor.

Flame exploded down the corridor as the shot struck the creature directly through the skull, detonating crystal and bone across the tunnel.

The impact illuminated the cavern.

And revealed the rest.

Shapes rose silently from the darkness behind it.

Ten more wolves.

Nyxian exhaled slowly.

"…Crystal Jaw Wolves."

Jax tilted his head slightly.

"Subtle naming."

His System activated immediately.

CRYSTAL JAW WOLF

Rank: D

• Enhanced crystal mandibles

• Double damage against metal armor

• Resistant to physical weaponry

• Weak to magic-based attacks

"Convenient," Jax muttered.

The wolves charged.

Peacemaker left his hand.

The massive double-bladed weapon spun through the tunnel like a rotating execution wheel, white veins along the blade igniting as it tore through the pack.

Bodies split apart instantly.

Crystal jaws shattered.

Eight wolves died before they fully understood combat had begun.

The blade curved smoothly through the air and returned.

Two remaining wolves lunged after it.

Bunny stepped forward.

One swing.

BOOM.

Both wolves ceased being recognizable lifeforms.

Their bodies detonated against the cavern wall in sprays of shattered crystal and fractured bone.

Silence returned immediately.

Jax exhaled once.

"Clear."

The Vixens stared briefly at the battlefield.

Then at him.

Then at the battlefield again.

That had lasted maybe five seconds.

As the corpses dissolved slowly into mana mist, Llandra glanced toward Jax.

"Collecting them?"

"Yes."

Jax extended one hand toward the fading remains.

"But first—"

His shadow spread unnaturally across the cave floor.

The temperature dropped.

"Come forth."

Darkness peeled upward from the corpses like liquid smoke.

One by one—

eleven wolves stood again.

Not flesh.

Shadow.

Their eyes glowed faint violet while their forms rippled like black flame given shape.

The Vixens froze.

Nyxian had explained the ability before.

That did not prepare them for seeing it.

There had been no chanting.

No ritual.

No strain.

Jax had simply decided the dead belonged to him now.

And reality agreed.

Zee swallowed carefully.

"…Are we using those to fight?"

Jax blinked once.

"No."

He pointed casually back toward the cave entrance.

"Break crystal formations near the entrance. Separate by mineral type. Prioritize structural nodes first."

The shadow wolves immediately obeyed.

No hesitation.

No resistance.

No confusion.

They sprinted away down the corridor at impossible speed.

The Vixens watched them go silently.

Jax turned back toward the group.

"Cannon fodder shouldn't waste party resources."

Silence.

Then Nyxian started smiling.

Of course she did.

A second later, realization hit Jax.

He winced slightly.

"…Nyxian. I didn't give you a chance."

She tilted her head.

"To claim them?"

He nodded.

"That was careless on my part."

Nyxian studied the fading mana mist quietly for a moment.

Then shook her head.

"It's fine."

She tapped her temple thoughtfully.

"I didn't feel resonance from them."

Jax relaxed slightly.

"You have to dominate something to take it," she explained casually. "And I need connection to extract a shadow. These were just… animals."

Then she smirked.

"You apparently traumatized them too quickly."

Bunny snorted.

"That feels accurate."

They continued deeper.

And the first floor never really recovered from meeting Jax.

More Crystal Jaw Wolves emerged from side tunnels.

Crystal Crawlers descended from walls and ceilings.

Several ambush predators attempted coordinated attacks.

Every single encounter ended brutally fast.

Peacemaker carved through corridors.

Earth Breaker shattered anything durable.

Llandra turned long hallways into burning execution lanes.

Nyxian danced through enemies while laughing.

Zee controlled the battlefield so efficiently that most threats never even reached striking distance.

Meanwhile—

Jax's growing shadow army turned the dungeon entrance into an active mining operation.

Crystals were harvested.

Debris cleared.

Resources organized.

The cave itself was being looted while they advanced.

By the time they reached the floor's final chamber, the Vixens weren't even breathing hard.

The cavern ahead widened massively.

And there—

waiting at the center—

stood a gigantic wolf.

Twice the size of the others.

Its crystal jaw glowed darker than the rest, dense veins of pulsing mana running beneath blackened crystal growths.

The creature snarled violently.

Bunny cracked her neck.

"That one at least LOOKS important."

Jax glanced at it once.

Then nodded casually.

"Take it."

The fight lasted approximately eight seconds.

Llandra blinded it.

Zee destabilized its mana flow.

Nyxian tangled its legs.

Bunny introduced Earth Breaker directly to its skull.

The boss collapsed instantly.

Jax extracted the shadow automatically before the body fully dissolved.

Then—

the chamber trembled.

Massive stone doors groaned open beyond the room, revealing a descending staircase deeper into the mountain.

A System notification appeared.

CONGRATULATIONS

YOU HAVE CLEARED FLOOR 1 OF THE CRYSTAL CAVE RAID

The group stopped.

Zee frowned.

"…Wait."

Llandra slowly turned toward the corpse.

"That was the boss?"

Nyxian blinked twice.

"…That was the entire floor?"

Jax checked the timer.

Then looked back up.

"…Huh."

Fifteen minutes.

Silence lingered for a moment longer.

Then Bunny pointed toward the stairs.

"So…"

Jax rested Peacemaker across one shoulder.

"I suppose it gets harder now."

The cave did not respond.

But somewhere deeper below—

something awakened.

And for the first time since they entered—

the Crystal Cave began paying attention.
