Chapter 57 - THE HEDONIC TREADMILL.

**Episode 59**

**THE HEDONIC TREADMILL**

*Why today's miracle becomes tomorrow's ordinary, why success quietly rewrites our expectations, and why the mind keeps chasing a happiness that always seems to live just beyond the next achievement.*

---

The jungle had developed a problem.

Not a dangerous problem.

Not even a particularly unusual one.

It had become...

**too happy.**

---

Which, according to Professor Gandalf, was almost always the beginning of something interesting.

---

The morning sun climbed slowly over the endless canopy, spilling warm golden light across rivers that shimmered like liquid glass.

Birds sang louder than usual.

Flowers seemed brighter.

Even the wind carried the unmistakable smell of fresh rain and wild mangoes.

Everything felt...

Perfect.

---

Tarzan burst through the trees carrying something enormous over one shoulder.

"I HAVE DONE IT!"

he roared.

"I HAVE CAUGHT..."

He dramatically dropped the object onto the ground.

"...THE BIGGEST FISH IN THE HISTORY OF FISH!"

The fish was nearly as tall as he was.

It glistened magnificently in the morning sunlight.

---

Dr. Milo Finch adjusted his glasses.

"...That is..."

"...actually impressive."

Tarzan folded his arms proudly.

"I EXPECT APPLAUSE."

---

Everyone applauded.

Even the parrots.

One parrot became so enthusiastic that it accidentally applauded another parrot instead.

Neither understood why.

---

Tarzan stood perfectly still.

Eyes closed.

Absorbing every second.

"This..."

he whispered,

"...is the happiest day of my life."

---

At almost exactly the same moment...

A loud explosion echoed from Milo's laboratory.

*BOOM.*

A cloud of purple smoke escaped through the windows.

Tarzan sighed.

"MILO HAS INVENTED TUESDAY."

---

The smoke cleared.

Milo emerged with soot covering half his face.

His hair appeared to have briefly disagreed with gravity.

Yet he was smiling.

Actually smiling.

"I did it."

Nobody moved.

"I finally stabilized the Chrono Resonance Engine."

Silence.

Then...

Arjun's eyes widened.

"The time machine?"

Milo nodded.

"It works."

---

This time...

Everyone applauded louder than before.

Tarzan applauded so enthusiastically he nearly frightened the fish back to life.

---

Elsewhere...

Meera returned from the deepest part of the jungle carrying an impossibly delicate flower.

Its petals shimmered blue one moment...

Silver the next...

Almost transparent under sunlight.

"I found it."

she whispered.

"The Moon Blossom."

Gandalf stood immediately.

"I haven't seen one in forty years."

---

Diana carefully examined the flower.

"It's beautiful."

Meera smiled softly.

"I've searched for this since I was a child."

---

Across the camp...

Arjun quietly opened an ancient wooden chest discovered beneath a fallen tree.

Inside lay an old leather map.

Covered with strange symbols.

Golden ink.

Unknown languages.

Tiny constellations.

At the bottom...

One sentence.

*"Only those who stop searching may discover what cannot be found."*

---

Everyone gathered around.

Tarzan gasped.

"A TREASURE MAP."

Milo smiled.

"Possibly."

Tarzan corrected him.

"DEFINITELY."

---

Within a single morning...

Everyone had achieved something extraordinary.

Tarzan caught the greatest fish.

Milo perfected years of scientific work.

Meera fulfilled a lifelong dream.

Arjun discovered an ancient mystery.

Diana identified a forgotten civilization hidden within the map.

---

The camp buzzed with celebration.

Stories.

Laughter.

Music.

Food.

Even the monkeys appeared unusually civilized.

One monkey politely stole another monkey's banana.

Progress.

---

As night fell...

The campfire glowed beneath a sky overflowing with stars.

Tarzan stretched happily.

"I BELIEVE..."

he announced,

"...THAT LIFE CANNOT POSSIBLY IMPROVE."

---

Professor Gandalf quietly smiled.

He had heard that sentence before.

Many times.

---

He said nothing.

---

...

---

The next morning...

Everything changed.

Not outside.

Inside.

---

Tarzan stared at yesterday's enormous fish.

"Hmm."

Milo looked up.

"What?"

"It LOOKS..."

Tarzan scratched his head.

"...SMALLER."

"It is literally the same fish."

"I KNOW."

"...BUT IT FEELS LESS HISTORIC."

---

Milo nodded absentmindedly.

He had his own problem.

Yesterday the Chrono Resonance Engine had seemed miraculous.

Today...

All he could see were tiny imperfections.

"The energy efficiency could improve."

he muttered.

"The stabilization field should be stronger."

"I'll redesign the containment coils."

---

Diana frowned.

"Milo..."

"You invented controlled time travel."

"Yes."

"...Version One."

---

Meera carefully looked at the Moon Blossom.

Yesterday...

She could barely stop smiling.

Today...

She quietly wondered if another flower somewhere might be even rarer.

---

Arjun unfolded the ancient map.

Instead of admiring it...

He found himself asking,

"I wonder what's on the next map."

---

Professor Gandalf observed everyone without interrupting.

His notebook remained closed.

For now.

---

Even breakfast felt different.

Yesterday...

Fresh mangoes had tasted extraordinary.

Today—

Tarzan sighed.

"...DO WE HAVE ANY DIFFERENT MANGOES?"

---

Milo blinked.

"There are..."

"...different mangoes?"

Tarzan nodded seriously.

"EXCITING MANGOES."

---

Nobody remembered him saying that yesterday's mangoes were "THE GREATEST FRUIT EVER CREATED."

---

The parrots began arguing.

Not because anything was wrong.

Because nothing felt especially exciting anymore.

---

One monkey climbed to the highest branch in the jungle.

He proudly displayed the largest banana anyone had ever seen.

Every monkey gasped.

For approximately twelve seconds.

Then they returned to whatever they had been doing.

The victorious monkey stared in disbelief.

"...That's it?"

He quietly ate the banana.

It tasted wonderful.

For about three bites.

Then...

It became...

Just...

A banana.

---

High above the trees...

Professor Gandalf watched the entire jungle.

Then he whispered to himself,

"Right on schedule."

---

He stood.

Picked up his walking stick.

And disappeared into the forest.

---

Nobody noticed.

Because everyone had already begun searching...

For their next miracle.

---

**End of Part One.**

**Episode 59 – THE HEDONIC TREADMILL**

**Part Two: The Wheel That Never Arrives**

---

Nobody saw Professor Gandalf for the rest of the morning.

Which wasn't unusual.

Professor Gandalf occasionally disappeared into the jungle with absolutely no explanation.

Sometimes he returned carrying ancient manuscripts.

Sometimes rare mushrooms.

Once...

He returned with a penguin.

Nobody knew where he'd found it.

The penguin refused to elaborate.

---

By noon...

The celebration from yesterday had completely evaporated.

Not because anything bad had happened.

Nothing had.

That was precisely the problem.

---

Tarzan sat beside his enormous fish.

Yesterday, he had admired it every thirty seconds.

Today...

He poked it with a stick.

"...IT HAS BECOME LESS IMPRESSIVE."

Dr. Milo Finch looked up from his notebook.

"The fish?"

"No."

"My FEELINGS."

---

Milo adjusted his glasses.

"Interesting."

He quickly scribbled something.

**Observation #27:**

*"External achievement remained constant.*

*Internal excitement decreased.*

*Human brain continues being suspicious."*

---

Diana wandered past.

"What are you writing?"

"I'm documenting emotional adaptation."

She smiled.

"Does that have a scientific name?"

"It does."

"I simply can't pronounce it before lunch."

---

Nearby—

Meera carefully placed the Moon Blossom into a clay vase.

She stepped back.

Looked at it.

Tilted her head.

"...Maybe it would look better near the window."

She moved it.

Stepped back again.

"...No..."

"...Perhaps beside the fire."

Another move.

Another inspection.

Another sigh.

Nothing felt quite right anymore.

---

Arjun noticed.

"You spent twenty years looking for that flower."

"I know."

"And yesterday you couldn't stop smiling."

"I know."

"So what's wrong?"

Meera hesitated.

"...Nothing."

A longer pause.

"...That's what's confusing."

---

The jungle itself seemed strangely restless.

Even the monkeys had started inventing competitions.

One announced,

"I CAN JUMP FARTHER THAN ANY MONKEY!"

The others applauded.

He jumped.

It was magnificent.

Everyone celebrated.

For almost twenty seconds.

Then another monkey said,

"I BET I CAN JUMP FARTHER."

The first monkey immediately stopped enjoying his victory.

---

Milo quietly watched the entire exchange.

"...Fascinating."

---

A peacock spread the most magnificent feathers ever seen in the jungle.

Every animal gathered.

They gasped.

Admired.

Complimented.

The peacock proudly turned in circles.

Exactly three minutes later...

He looked down at his own feathers.

"...They could probably be brighter."

---

Tarzan overheard.

"...ARE ALL OF US LOSING OUR MINDS?"

---

At that exact moment...

A loud...

**THUMP!**

echoed from deeper inside the forest.

Then another.

**THUMP.**

Then another.

**THUMP.**

---

The ground trembled gently beneath their feet.

Tarzan immediately grabbed three spears.

"You only have two hands."

Milo pointed out.

"I LIKE OPTIONS."

---

Everyone hurried toward the sound.

The deeper they walked...

The stranger the forest became.

Birds had gathered silently on branches.

Monkeys watched without making a sound.

Even the wind seemed curious.

---

Then...

The trees opened into a wide clearing.

Everyone stopped.

In the very center stood Professor Gandalf.

Smiling.

Beside...

The largest wooden wheel anyone had ever seen.

It towered nearly twenty feet into the air.

Perfectly round.

Beautifully carved.

Covered in symbols from civilizations none of them recognized.

---

Tarzan blinked.

"...IS IT..."

"...A GIANT CHEESE?"

---

"No."

---

"...A VERY DISCIPLINED HAMSTER WHEEL?"

---

"Closer."

---

Milo walked around it.

The craftsmanship was extraordinary.

No nails.

No metal.

Only perfectly balanced wood.

"This must have taken weeks."

Gandalf nodded.

"It did."

"You built it secretly?"

"No."

"I built it years ago."

"You've just never needed it until today."

---

Diana touched one of the carvings.

"What does this symbol mean?"

Professor Gandalf smiled.

"It means..."

**'Almost.'**

---

She frowned.

"And this one?"

**'Nearly.'**

---

"And that one?"

**'Just a little more.'**

---

An uncomfortable silence settled over the clearing.

---

Tarzan walked around the enormous wheel three times.

"...I DO NOT UNDERSTAND."

---

Professor Gandalf picked up a small stone.

He placed it carefully on the very bottom of the wheel.

The stone immediately rolled backward.

Never climbing.

Never staying still.

Always returning.

---

"Imagine," Gandalf said softly,

"that this stone is happiness."

Everyone watched quietly.

---

"Now imagine every achievement..."

He gently pushed the wheel.

"...moves the wheel forward."

The wheel turned slowly.

The stone climbed.

Higher...

Higher...

Almost reaching the top.

Then...

As the wheel continued turning...

The stone rolled gently back down.

Returning almost exactly where it had begun.

---

Nobody spoke.

---

Tarzan finally broke the silence.

"...YOUR WHEEL IS BROKEN."

Professor Gandalf laughed.

"No."

"It is working perfectly."

---

Milo stared thoughtfully.

"The stone reached the top."

"Yes."

"But it didn't stay there."

"No."

---

"It couldn't."

---

The professor looked at each of them.

"Yesterday..."

He pointed toward Tarzan.

"You caught the greatest fish of your life."

Tarzan nodded.

"I DID."

---

"How happy were you?"

"I WAS THE KING OF EXISTENCE."

---

"And today?"

Tarzan looked at the fish.

"...IT SMELLS."

---

Everyone laughed.

Even Tarzan.

---

Gandalf turned toward Milo.

"Yesterday you completed the greatest invention of your career."

"Yes."

"And today?"

"I've already planned Version Two."

---

Meera lowered her eyes before Gandalf even looked at her.

"I understand."

she whispered.

"The flower didn't change."

"No."

"I did."

---

Professor Gandalf nodded.

"The mind..."

He gently spun the enormous wheel again.

"...was never designed to stop."

The wheel turned silently.

Again.

And again.

And again.

---

"It keeps moving the point where happiness lives."

---

He looked toward the endless jungle stretching beyond the clearing.

"Yesterday's dream..."

"...becomes today's expectation."

"Today's miracle..."

"...becomes tomorrow's normal."

"And tomorrow..."

He smiled gently.

"...the mind asks for something just beyond the horizon."

---

The wheel slowed.

Stopped.

The stone rested quietly at the bottom once more.

---

Nobody laughed this time.

Because for the first time that day...

The wheel wasn't describing itself.

It was describing them.

---
