Chapter 174 - Chapter 174 About My Companion's Homecoming That Requires the Whole City to Rearrange Its Roads

Magnetic Field Power has one ridiculously broken ability—'Cellular Reconstruction.' As long as either the brain or the heart is intact, the body can be restored through Cellular Reconstruction, and it can naturally be used to heal others as well.

But using 'Cellular Reconstruction' at low horsepower consumes a huge amount of power. Since unlocking Magnetic Field Power, Hope has only raised his strength to 70,000 horsepower.

So he plans to restore Gildarts' limbs after returning to the guild.

Magnetic Field Power doesn't grow on its own; it has to be driven by one's spirit and willpower.

These days Hope has been living too comfortably, so much so that he's grown slack, forgetting that there's still a wild raid boss roaming this world.

After getting back, it's time to buckle down.

Hope estimates that 150,000 horsepower of Magnetic Field Power should let him handle the Black Dragon with ease.

After discussing it with Gildarts, the young man's claim that he could restore the older man's lost limbs naturally thrilled him.

To him, no matter how good Magic-Powered Prosthetics are, they're never as good as the limbs you were born with.

Back at the clinic, the old doctor greeted Gildarts with a barrage of curses—about to retire, yet stuck treating a patient who insists on drinking no matter how badly he's hurt; the doctor's exhausted.

Gildarts spent a good while coaxing and apologizing before the old doctor calmed down.

After an examination confirmed that Gildarts' internal organs had recovered, the doctor finally let him leave.

Listening to the long string of digits that was the treatment fee, Hope could only sigh to himself: doctors in this world really rake it in.

The return train rocked rhythmically on the rails.

Hope and Gildarts sat facing each other in a private compartment; several empty bottles littered the table between them—all trophies claimed by Gildarts.

Hearing Hope recount recent guild affairs, Gildarts popped open another bottle, took a long swig, and sighed, "Who'd have thought Laxus almost started a civil war?"

Hope watched the scenery flash past outside, fingers drumming on Ivan's magic Card. "In the end you can't blame Laxus entirely—look what kind of father he got stuck with."

"Hahahahaha, right."

Gildarts chuckled. "If I ever have kids, I'll be a proper dad—nothing like that jerk Ivan…"

A hardcore drunk raising a kid?

In the end you'd probably just raise another little drunk.

Hope roasted him silently, yet for some reason thought of Cana. "Gildarts, Cana's knocking back booze like water at her age—did you rub off on her?"

"Cana, huh…"

Gildarts swirled his bottle. "That kid was my fan; she found the guild all by herself when she was tiny, but after she grew up she pretty much ignored me."

Hope delivered the merciless jab: "Probably because she realized her idol's a wreck."

"Heh… heh-heh…"

Gildarts forced a laugh and quickly changed the subject. "Hope, you can use Cana's Card magic and Happy's Wing magic—learning too many spells isn't good; we Mages have limited energy."

Facing Gildarts' well-meant warning, Hope brushed it off with his usual excuse.

"Copy Magic… sounds pretty amazing."

Gildarts rubbed his hands; with a casual tap an empty bottle on the table turned to powder and was carried out the window by the wind. "Hey Hope, as thanks, how about trying to copy my Crush magic? It's a Super-Rank spell, y'know~"

Super Destruction Magic: Crush

Sure enough, what other Mages treat as an ace in the hole is just Gildarts' basic spell.

No wonder the whole guild respects him—using a destruction-type Super-Rank spell as a basic skill; who could stand up to that? Hope soon logged 'Crush' into his system.

As a Super Destruction Magic, Crush can instantly shatter the atomic bonds of anything it touches; its killing power is terrifying—slip up in battle and the enemy turns into a bloody pulp.

To keep things from getting too gory, Gildarts had to develop 'Disassembly' on top of Crush, a version that scatters a material's structure and then re-arranges it.

It can dismantle spells and even break living beings down into hordes of mini-versions before reassembling them.

Only when facing a truly strong foe does Gildarts get serious and bring out the lethal Crush.

The journey home passed in conversation. By the time familiar Magnolia Station came into view, the Sky was already darkening.

"Finally back…"

Gildarts stretched. "This time was rough—the 100-Year Quest failed, but at least we made it home alive."

The two stepped off the train, and just as they left the station a passer-by pointed at Gildarts and shouted, "Sound the alarm! Sound the alarm! Gildarts is back!!"

Then, to Hope's bewilderment, every pedestrian and vendor on the street began packing up and leaving at unbelievable speed.

In less than a minute the entire street outside the station was deserted.

A loud bell pealed from the cathedral, after which magical loudspeakers rose into the Sky and began an emergency broadcast across Magnolia.

"The city is about to enter Gildarts Mode!"

"All citizens please move to your designated positions immediately!"

"Repeat: the city is about to enter Gildarts Mode…"

"…"

Magnolia then split into several large plates that shifted and locked together; the four main streets merged until they formed one straight boulevard leading directly to Fairy Tail.

Standing on that vast, giant road, Hope and Gildarts stared at each other.

Looking at Gildarts' utterly bewildered face, Hope twitched his lips. "Don't play innocent—what kind of atrocity did you commit to make the city shell out big money for your own personal road?"

"Well… hahahahaha…"

Unable to keep up the act, Gildarts sheepishly explained, "You know what my magic's like, Hope—sometimes I unconsciously wreck the buildings around me…"

"So you 'accidentally' demolished half the city, huh?"

Hope slapped his forehead in despair—just how much destruction had this guy caused for Magnolia to spend a fortune creating a Gildarts Mode…
