Chapter 14 - I can’t do it

Daredevil in control rode straight to the barrier, where a section of the town was blocked off. This wasn't new; many parts of cities or small towns had areas where Kraegans made their nests. At times, they wouldn't leave. Thankfully, once they were sealed off, but due to the difficulty of either their numbers or an evolved one, it was just easier to section off a zone than to waste resources eradicating them.

Ash tried his best to stop the possessed bike, but the more he resisted, the more Daredevil fought back. The pipes blew flames, the front headlight glowed red, his regrets and hate consumed Daredevil, and he wanted to run wild.

"Oh shit!" Ash shouted as Daredevil, true to his name, made a risky dash followed by a jump off a broken-down car to go over the barrier. The bike howled in the air as both Ash and Daredevil made it inside the sealed section. Daredevil stopped his mad rush, and he went to a slow creeping pace like a hunter stalking for prey. Ash was trying to catch his breath. Even with his head not human, the rest of his body was; his lungs took a beating from the adrenaline the ride gave him.

"Don't... you ever do that again! Do you have any idea how much this bike means to me? I don't care how angry you are, we're going home. You're listening to me!" Ash ordered, but Daredevil didn't listen. He wanted to hunt a Kraegan, no matter how much Ash would resist.

The headlight shifted, the glowing red beam pointed at a small group feasting on one of their own. With no human food source, many resorted to cannibalism; it wouldn't feed them, but it would stave off their hunger pains.

The Kraegans turned their sight to Ash and Daredevil. They roared as their animalistic strides headed to their position. The bike engine blasted as Daredevil rode straight at them, the front tire used as a battering ram, crushing their skulls in its rush.

"Knock it off! You'll wreck the bike. I won't let you destroy my brother's memory for your revenge." Ash held down tight on the brakes, using his raw strength to plant a foot on the ground to stop Daredevil from running wild again. The other Kraegans who heard the commotion made their way to Ash now, the smell of his human flesh like a freshly opened bottle of wine in the air.

"Damn, well, too late now, guess I can test this out now. Hell's fire!" Ash blasted a burst stream of fire at the Kraegans, their screams being drowned by the crackle of their burning flesh and bone.

{Message: if the user wishes to obtain more strength and access to a larger inventory, they must collect heads before they are incinerated.}}

Hearing the announcement, Ash stopped shooting flames at the Kraegans; he wouldn't miss out on more strength just because he was careless.

"How am I gonna get their heads. I burned the hatchet earlier; I'll need something to cut their necks. System: Does the shop sell weapons too?"

The system scrolled through its inventory list and displayed a weapons selection for Ash to choose from. Unfortunately for him, his selection was limited; he didn't have enough stats to spare or heads to use for the exchange for anything strong or high in level. The best he could do was give up 50 strength points for a C-level longsword at best. He grumbled because it was tacky-looking and had no special features other than a +10 slash damage.

"What is this, a video game in real life. Oh, forget it, I'll take it."

The system accepted the transaction, the sword popped up in front of him, and he grabbed it immediately before Daredevil rode off again after another Kraegan was lined up in its path.

Ash tried to swing the sword, but Daredevil wasn't giving him an opportunity.

Every ride Daredevil took was aimed at crushing the Kraegan; no room for error was permitted in his attempt at revenge.

"Damnitt, he's not gonna give me any chances. I've got to get this bike under control, or I'm never leaving this place."

Ash holstered the sword. He had to find a way to stop Daredevil from moving. The brake was a no-go because Daredevil could ignore it with his willpower. The horse wanted to rampage, to release his anger without restraint against those who wronged him.

Ash tried again by slamming his feet into the front tire, damaging his shoes in the process, to slow it down. Daredevil, having had enough of Ash interfering, slammed the brakes, brutally throwing Ash off, slamming him into the ground shoulder-first.

Ash groaned in pain, holding his left shoulder. The impact had slammed him enough to dislocate his shoulder. His feet hurt the worst; the tire ate through his shoes, exposing his toes and the tops of his heels. Ash was hurting and pissed off now; he forced himself to get up, using the sword as a cane to steady himself.

His head felt dizzy, and he was hoping he wasn't concussed when he hit the ground.

When Ash looked up, he could see Daredevil pointing the red headlight at him, staring him down in a symbolic way. The engine purred as the bike remained still. Ash stared back, not letting himself be a victim of his own bike. He tightened his hold on the sword. He wasn't just angry now; he was downright boiling to punish Daredevil.

"Alright, you want to poke the Komodo, do you?" Ash lifted with his will to point the sword at Daredevil. "I saved you because you meant a lot to Lita, but that bike you're possessing means more to me than my own life. I refuse to let you steal my brother's memory away for your bloodlust." Ash held the sword high with his good arm, Daredevil roared the engine, and the back tire spun as Daredevil charged straight at Ash. Ash dodged to the side and slapped the tip of the sword against the gas tank. Hitting the tank hurt Ash inside; if the blood from the scrapes on his body hadn't splashed his face earlier, they would have been mistaken for tears if he could still cry.

He remembered Issac and Amelia covered in grease and paint, fixing the bike up. The memory hit harder than his fall. When he struck the bike again, he remembered riding on Isaac's lap when he was little, going out for joyrides despite Amelia's protests about safety. Every strike made at the bike hurt Ash's soul more and more; it felt to him that he was the one taking all the damage, not Daredevil. The next strike scraped a good amount of the paint off the gas tank that they had painted together.

Ash couldn't do it anymore. It wasn't worth it to him. He dropped his sword, lowering his head as he couldn't go through with it again.

Daredevil went for another run, but he saw Ash unwilling to hit him again.

"No more. I'm done." Ash took a deep breath, lifting his head and his arm, leaving himself vulnerable to another attack. Daredevil hesitated at first; he couldn't believe what Ash was doing. He didn't care; he wanted to give in to his anger, and he charged again.

Daredevil was no more than ten feet from hitting Ash before a car was flung in their direction. Daredevil spun out of control before stopping itself from crashing. Ash broke from his defeated pose to see where the car had been thrown from. He was not happy to see the origin, because what flung it was worse than Daredevil.

He saw a Kraegan that had the physique of a seven-foot-tall bodybuilder, a mangled open jaw with multiple teeth, and torn faces hanging around its waist like a championship belt.

"Oh, you gotta be fucking kidding me!"
