Chapter 26 - Chapter 24: Jake And Tonys Adventure

I blinked my eyes open, staring up at the massive, swirling patterns of wood that made up the inside of Hometree. The morning light filtered through the thick, leaves in long, soft shafts of gold and pale green. I rolled over, stretching my small arms and legs letting out a quiet yawn as I rubbed my eyes.

As I lay there breathing in the air, waiting for my brain to fully boot up, my thoughts drifted through sheer absurdity of my situation. Specifically, I started recounting why on Earth—or rather, why on Pandora—I could breathe the air in this place.

A few days ago, before we got separated from the main science team, I had been exploring the the base, sketching out some plant structures in my notebook. Suddenly, the battery indicator on my clear human exopack mask blinked twice and completely flatlined. The internal filtration fan spun down to a dead stop. Panic had spiked through my chest instantly. The air on Pandora was supposed to be completely lethal to humans, a toxic soup of carbon dioxide, methane, and hydrogen sulfide that could knock a grown man unconscious in twenty seconds and kill him in four minutes. I had squeezed my eyes shut, bracing myself to faint, to choke, or to start coughing up blood.

But nothing happened.

I had opened my eyes, taken a tentative breath, and realized my lungs felt completely fine. When I finally snuck back into the lab later that evening and ran some discrete diagnostic scans on myself, I discovered the truth. The transwarper—the mysterious multiversal device strapped to my wrist that had somehow pulled me from my old life and brought me into this world possessed a constantly active, passive forcefield. It was entirely microscopic, completely unnoticeable to the naked eye, and totally untraceable to the RDA's sensors. It acted as an invisible filtration system an inch away from my face, scrubbing the toxic gases from the atmosphere before the air even reached my nose.

I was completely immune to Pandora's poison. But since I absolutely did not want anyone finding out—the last thing an eight-year-old dreamer needs is to be strapped to an RDA dissection table as a medical anomaly—I kept wearing the oxygen masks just like all the other humans. I wasn't going to let them make me a lab rat. I had a future to change.

A sudden, deep rustle from the hammock hanging right next to mine pulled me out of my thoughts.

Jake's massive, ten-foot-tall Avatar body shifted, his long blue limbs untangling from the woven leaves as he sat up. He rubbed his large yellow eyes, blinking down at me through the morning haze. His tail swished lazily over the edge of the hammock.

"Morning, kid," Jake muttered, his voice a deep, gravelly yawn.

"Morning, wheels," I replied, sitting up and swinging my small legs over the edge of my leaf pod. "You sleep okay, or did the giant tree bugs bite?"

Jake offered a faint, lopsided grin, adjusting his posture. "Grace spoke to me last night while you were already snoring. She was worried sick about you, Tony. She wanted me to tell you to stay safe, keep your head down, and stay within the village boundaries. She said she's going to come out here and bring you back to the lab shack as soon as she can clear it with Hell's Gate."

I shrugged, casually sliding down from my hammock onto the thick, sturdy root path below. "Tell her not to rush. I've got a whole new curriculum to study out here, and the material is spectacular."

Jake's Pov:

We were out in a wide, muddy clearing bordered by massive ferns, and I was failing spectacularly at my first lesson with Neytiri: learning how to ride a Pa'li—a Direhorse. The six-legged, armored beast stood calmly in the center of the clearing, casually twitching its long neck antennae while Jake stood covered in wet, brown muck, looking thoroughly frustrated.

Neytiri stood a few paces away, her arms crossed over her slender chest, her long ears twitching with amusement. "You must feel her," she instructed, her voice rich with the cadence of the forest. "The tsaheylu. The bond. It is not something you command with force, Jake. You must connect with her. Hear her breath. Feel her heartbeat. Tell her where to go inside your mind."

I grit my teeth, reached back, grabbing my long, braided queue, and carefully brought the glowing pink tendrils at the tip toward the Direhorse's antennae. The neural link fused with a soft, organic snap. My eyes widened slightly as the rush of thought and emotion rushed through my mind.

"Okay," I muttered, gripping the base of the beast's neck. "I feel it. I think I got it. Alright... forward!"

He aggressively dug his bare heels into the Direhorse's sides.

The beast let out a startled, high-pitched shriek. It immediately reared up on its hind legs, thrashing wildly. I immediately lost my balance, my arms flailing as I flew backward through the air with a loud shout, crashing face-first into a massive, exceptionally deep puddle of thick mud.

Neytiri didn't even try to hide it. She threw her head back and broke out into a bright, musical, hysterical laugh that echoed completely through the clearing.

I groaned, rolling onto my back, spitting out a mouthful of dirt. Before I could even complain, the heavy, rhythmic thudding of approaching hooves cut through the forest.

Tsu'tey—Neytiri's fiancé and the clan's fiercest warrior—rode into the clearing on his own Direhorse, accompanied by another hunter. Tsu'tey looked down at me floundering in the mud, his face contorted into a sneer of pure, unadulterated mockery. He spoke sharply in Na'vi to his companion, his tone dripping with disdain as he gestured to the muddy Dreamwalker.

"Look at this demon," Tsu'tey sneered, his voice loud and condescending. "He has the body of a warrior, but he moves with the grace of a crushed worm. He cannot even walk, let alone ride."

I scowled, pushing myself up onto my knees, ready to snap back.

But right behind Tsu'tey's hunting party, the bushes rustled, and a smaller, sleeker Direhorse trotted gracefully into the clearing.

Sitting effortlessly atop the beast was Tony. He had fashioned a set of reins out of flexible vines, using them to guide the creature towards us The Direhorse moved with perfect fluidity, responding to his calm, steady energy.

And behind him, was Baymax waving at us...Okay.

"Hello" Baymax's polite, robotic voice drifted through the clearing.

He pulled his Direhorse to a smooth, halt right next to us and looked down at me, a massive, incredibly smug smirk spreading across his stupid face.

"Hello there" he said loudly, enjoying every second of it. "Jake I was just looking for you, this thing is so freaking easy to ride...Uuh why are you covered in mud?"

I just glared up at him, entirely speechless. Tsu'tey and his friend stared at him in absolute, stunned silence, clearly baffled by how a tiny human child was managing to ride a beast of the forest without a biological connection. Neytiri covered her mouth, her shoulders shaking as she giggled even louder at him.

While I spent my days getting pushed to the absolute physical limits by Neytiri, Tony's education with the clan took a very different path. Mo'at had taken a profound interest in his unique mind. Over the next week, he spent hours sitting with the Tsahìk and the village healers. They taught him about the land, the stars, the complex celestial movements of the gas giant Polyphemus, and the intricate medicine of the forest. Learning how the roots of the trees communicated, how specific glowing fungi could accelerate healing, and how the entire ecosystem was bound to Eywa. He spent hours everyday chatting with Grace and Norm all about it, the things that even those two didn't know about.

And as the days passed I continued to record the mandatory video logs.

No Ones POV:

The scene shifted to the new, remote lab shack away from the main base and the watchful, ruthless eyes of Colonel Quaritch. Jake sat in his wheelchair in front of the video terminal, looking utterly exhausted.

"Okay, this is video log 12, time's 21:32," Jake said, rubbing the back of his neck. He turned his head to look back at Grace and Norm, who were typing away at their respective workstations. "Do I have to do this now? I really need to get some rest."

Grace didn't even look up from her screen, her voice firm. "No, now. While it's fresh in your head."

Jake let out a heavy sigh, turning back to face the camera. "Okay. Location, shack. And the days are starting to blur together..."

"The language is a pain...But. You know, I figure it's like figuring out a weapon. Repetition. Repetition."

Avatar Jake was sitting cross-legged on a massive, glowing branch high up in Hometree. Neytiri sat directly in front of him, speaking a complex Na'vi phrase. Jake attempted to repeat it, his accent completely butchering the fluid language.

Neytiri let out a frustrated sigh and promptly whacked him squarely on the side of the head with her bow. "Skxawng!"

"Neytiri calls me skxawng. It means moron."

Suddenly, Tonys small face popped up directly into the frame from a lower branch, a massive grin on his face as he shouted, "And she's right!"

Jake chuckled on the log, reaching out with a massive blue hand to jokingly shove him completely out of the camera's view. Grace seeing him called out to him. "Tony! Come over here, it's time to study the neural mapping of the roots before you head back to the clan!" He groaned, waving goodbye to Jake as he scurried off to further his education.

"Norm's attitude has improved lately," Jake continued.

In the lab shack, Norm was standing over Jake's chair, passionately gesturing with his hands as he helped him translate a list of verbs, pointing to a holographic dictionary. "It's good that he's back on board. But he thinks I'm a skxawng too."

Back to the deep jungle. Jake was sprinting at full speed along the massive, interlocking branches, desperately trying to keep up with Neytiri's agile, breathtaking pace.

"My feet are getting tougher. I can run farther every day."

He watched intently as Neytiri reached the end of a massive branch, leaped out into the open air, grabbed a hanging, glowing root, and smoothly used the momentum to swing herself onto a completely different branch a tier above.

"I can trust my body to know what to do."

Jake didn't hesitate. He launched his massive Avatar body into the air, caught the root with a grunt of effort, and swung himself upward, landing perfectly on his feet right next to her.

And a few days after we return to the Direhorse clearing. This time, Jake was mounted confidently, riding the beast with incredible speed and control, weaving through the grass like a pro.

"Yeah, check it out!" Jake shouted at the top of his lungs, a massive grin on his face as he pushed the beast to a gallop.

Tony was riding right alongside him on his smaller mount, laughing hysterically. "Yeah! You got it, wheels!!" he cheered loudly.

Jake laughed, looking over at him in triumph—and completely failed to see a low-hanging branch directly in his path. Smack. The branch hit him squarely in the chest, sending him flying off the back of the horse. He crashed hard onto the ground right in front of a waiting Neytiri.

"Crap!" Jake complained loudly from the dirt. Tony pulled his mount to a halt, completely breaking out into a roaring fit of laughter at his sudden misfortune.

"BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

Jakes log slowed down, shifting to a quieter, more focused tone as Jake and Neytiri wandered deep into the forest on foot. Neytiri bent down, lightly pressing her long fingers against the damp earth of a trail, checking a faint indentation in the soil.

"Every day it's reading the trails. The tracks at the waterhole, the tiniest scents and sounds."

They crawled up a steep, mossy hill on their stomachs, peering over the ridge. Jake looked up, his yellow eyes wide as he spotted a pack of Viperwolves resting in the shade of a massive root system just fifty yards away. A few tiny, sleek Viperwolf cubs were playfully tumbling over each other, nipping at their mother's ears.

"She's always going on about the flow of energy, the spirits of animals..." Jake's voiceover sighed. "I really hope this tree-hugger crap isn't on the finale."

Back in the reality of the lab shack, Grace was sitting right behind Jake's recording chair. She pulled her glasses off, looking at him with a serious, maternal expression. "This isn't just about eye-hand coordination out there, you know. You need to listen to what she says, Jake. Try to see the forest through her eyes."

Jake rolled his eyes dramatically, turning his head back to the camera. "Excuse me. This is my video log here," he jokingly snapped.

Right at that moment, a bright, cheerful laugh echoed from the corner of the bunker. Jake turned his chair to look. Trudy and Tony were lying across one of the spare military bunks together, a rugged laptop propped up on a crate between us. They were eating snacks and watching old Looney Tunes cartoons.

Jake looked back at the video log lens, his expression softening with genuine warmth. "Tony's been making it easier. He's smart... well, I knew that, but just not how smart. Tony's formed a bond with these people. They see him as more than gifted, and I don't blame them. He's learned everything they've tried teaching me in less than half the time it took me to learn. And he's used those teachings to improve the robot he built... uh, Baymax, I think he said its name was. And he's always there when I fall, laughing but pushing me to do more. He's like a fun little brother, I wish Tommy could have met him. They would have gotten along really well."

Jake and Neytiri were sprinting along a pathway that reached a truly extreme, dizzying height above the forest floor. Without a single moment of hesitation, Neytiri put her bow to her back, smiled at Jake, and jumped straight off the edge. She fell through the sky, expertly using the massive, broad leaves of the lower trees to slow her descent, bouncing gracefully from one giant leaf to the next until she touched down safely on the ground.

Jake stopped dead at the very edge of the branch, looking down the terrifying drop, taking deep, rapid breaths.

"With Neytiri, it's learn fast or die,"

Avatar Jake stared down, his ears pinned back. "You gotta be kidding me." He took a few steps back, steeled his nerves, and sprinted off the edge, jumping after her. "AAAAAAAAH!" he screamed at the top of his lungs.

He plummeted through the air, crashing wildly through tangled vines and smashing violently into the massive leaves. He spun out of control, tumbling down the foliage before finally falling face-first onto a cluster of massive, spongy, mushroom-like plants that exploded into a cloud of glowing spores, perfectly cushioning his impact.

Jake lay on his back, huffing and puffing as he used his hands to desperately clear the glowing dirt and spores off his face. He blinked, looking up at Neytiri who was standing over him with an amused smirk.

Suddenly, a second, much higher-pitched scream echoed from above. "AAAAAAAAAH!!"

Jake barely had time to widen his eyes before my small human body crashed directly on top of his stomach, knocking the absolute wind out of him and sending us both rolling into the dirt.

"Hey, Jake! Nice of you to drop in!" Tony joked, pushing himself up with a massive grin.

Jake grovelled, breaking out into a loud, breathless laugh as he shook his head. Neytiri completely lost her composure, breaking out into bright, joyful giggles at the ridiculous sight of them.

A few days later, thanks to the combined, relentless efforts of Jake and Tony, they had finally talked Mo'at into letting Grace back into the village. It was her very first time stepping foot inside Hometree since the RDA had forcibly closed down her school years ago.

Grace, in her Avatar body, walked through the grand arches of the roots, her eyes wide with a profound, emotional reverence. A group of Na'vi children ran up to her, and she immediately knelt down, greeting them fluently in their own tongue, her voice thick with emotion.

"I and Tony talked Mo'at into letting Grace into the village,".

"It's her first time since the school was closed down."

After that day, Grace's entire demeanor toward Jake changed. She started treating him with warmth, like a true friend. When the Avatar link would disconnect late at night, instead of letting Jake crawl straight into his bunk completely exhausted, she would actively sit him down at the kitchen table, making sure he ate every bite of his food.

Meanwhile, across the table, Tony was entirely dead to the world. he was lying face-first directly into a massive bowl of pasta, snoring softly as the exhaustion of a twelve-hour study session with the healers finally caught up to his eight-year-old body.

But for Jake, the magic of Pandora was just beginning to unfold.

That same night, deep in the bioluminescent forest, he and Neytiri reached a quiet, hidden grove. A tiny, firefly-like creature rested gently on the leaf of a glowing plant. Jake slowly reached his hand out toward it. The moment his finger brushed the leaf, the insect lifted off into the air. Its elegant wings suddenly expanded outward, transforming into the perfect shape of a spinning, glowing disk that lit up the darkness like a miniature galaxy. The sheer, breathtaking beauty of the creature caused both Jake and Neytiri to smile softly, their eyes reflecting the radiant light.

As they continued exploring the deeper secrets of the night, they ran toward the edge of a cliff and leaped together into a brilliantly lit, neon-blue lake, swimming side-by-side through the warm, glowing water, completely synchronized with the rhythm of the world.

Back at the remote lab shack, the room was completely dark except for the faint glow of a desk lamp. Tony was fast asleep, his head resting sideways over a massive, incredibly detailed blueprint. The schematics detailed a massive, heavy armor upgrade for Baymax—a brilliant combination of a Pacific Rim Jaeger design and Baymax's soft, protective contours, built to defend the people he had grown to care about.

Grace walked softly into the room, a tender smile on her face. She looked down at his sleeping form, her eyes filled with a deep, maternal affection. "Come on, sweetie," she whispered in a quiet, soothing tone.

She gently slid the blueprint out from under his cheek, carefully picking his small body up into her arms. She carried him over to his military bunk, tucking the heavy blankets securely around his shoulders. She leaned down, gently kissing his forehead, before turning off the desk lamp and leaving him to the quiet sanctuary of his dreams.

Tonys POV:

I woke up from my morning nap with a soft blink, stretching my arms as I sat up on the edge of my bunk. I let out a slow breath.

It had been exactly three months since the transwarper had dropped me into this universe. Three months of living a double life—a brilliant human child by day, and a dedicated student of the Omaticaya healers by night. I had changed so much in such a short time. My body was stronger, my mind was sharper, but I still missed my family, I missed mum and dad alot and I kept thinking about Jarvis back home. Luckily Grace, Jake and the others have kept me from thinking about it for too long. I sometimes worry that i'll be stuck here...Forever.

"Tony! Get your butt out here, breakfast is on the table!" Norm's loud voice shouted from the main cabin. "Your lessons with Omaticaya are going to be starting soon, so move it!"

"I'm coming, I'm coming! Keep your shirt on, Norm!" I yelled back with a playful edge in my voice. Over the last few months, I had developed a deep, close familiarity with the science team, treating them more like an eccentric extended family than colleagues.

I hopped off the bunk and jogged into the kitchen area, sliding onto the bench right next to Jake, Trudy, and Grace. Norm was actively walking around the table, sliding plates of rehydrated ration breakfast in front of all of us.

Grace took a long sip of her coffee, her eyes bright as she looked across the table. "Alright, listen up. Today is a massive day for all of us. Tony, you're going to be attending the formal ceremony today. The clan has finalized everything. Tonight is the night Jake officially becomes a man by the tribe's laws—a true, permanent member of the Omaticaya."

I paused, my fork hovering in the air as a massive, incredibly teasing smirk slowly spread across my face. I leaned across the table, locking my gaze onto Jake, who immediately looked like he wanted to disappear into his shirt.

"Oh, the big ceremony," I teased, my voice dripping with absolute amusement. "Tell me, Jake... is the princess going to be wearing her special ceremonial beads for you tonight? Because let's be real, the subtle little glances she sends over to you every time you're together are getting ridiculous. The closeness, the lingering hand touches... I mean, it's practically a rom-com out there."

Jake's face flushed a deep, immediate red, and he aggressively pointed his fork at me. "Shut up, Tony. Seriously. Eat your breakfast."

Trudy immediately burst out into a loud, roaring laugh, leaning over the table to join in on the fun. "Oh, come on, Jake! The kid's totally right! You scored yourself a literal alien princess. That's top-tier bragging rights for a marine. Don't act like you haven't noticed."

"We're just... training!" Jake stammered, his voice cracking slightly as he got thoroughly flustered. "It's a cultural exchange, alright? Strictly educational!"

"Oh, absolutely," I nodded solemnly, my eyes sparkling with mischief. "Super educational. Especially the part where you guys were staring into each other's eyes by the glowing lake last week. I'm sure that was a very important vocabulary lesson."

"You're a little menace, you know that?!" Jake shouted, entirely red-faced as he tried to swat at my head.

"Hey, that hurts Jake! It's my obligation as the only human hanging out with the Omaticaya to make your love life incredibly awkward!" I fired back, dodging his hand with a loud laugh.

The two of us immediately started going at it like real siblings, bickering back and forth across the table, throwing playful insults while Trudy kept laughing and Norm shook his head.

"Alright, that's enough, both of you!" Grace ordered, though a massive, affectionate smile was playing on her lips. "Save the energy for the climb. Eat up."

It wasn't long before we stood with the clan, the day becoming evening.

Grace, in her Avatar body, and I were standing side-by-side near the grand, glowing common area of Hometree, hanging out with the rest of the clan. The atmosphere was thick with a deep, powerful reverence. The ceremonial drums were beating in a slow, rhythmic, hypnotic pulse that vibrated right through the wooden floor.

A few yards away, the Na'vi children were laughing joyfully, actively playing a game of tag with Baymax, who was waddling slowly through the roots, his bamboo armor clicking softly. I made it 2 months ago since there were too many times where Baymax almost popped.

Grace gently tapped my shoulder, her voice a soft, proud whisper. "Tony, come over here. Look."

I stepped away from the kids, standing right next to Grace's hip as we turned our eyes toward the center of the grand hall.

The crowd of hundreds of Na'vi parted in absolute, dead silence.

Jake walked out into the clearing. Now a warrior. His blue skin was completely covered in striking, intricate patterns of white tribal ceremonial paint, stretching across his chest, his arms, and his face. He walked with an absolute, unyielding confidence, his yellow eyes steady.

"The Na'vi say that every person is born twice, the second time is when you earn your place among the people. Forever."

Jake stopped directly in front of Mo'at and Eytukan. The clan head looked down at him, his face filled with an ancient, profound pride. He stepped forward, his long, hands coming down to rest firmly and securely on Jake's painted shoulders.

"You are now a son of the Omaticaya," Eytukan declared, his powerful voice echoing flawlessly through the entire hollow of Hometree. "You are part of the People."

Neytiri stepped forward from the ranks of the warriors, a beautiful, radiant smile lighting up her face. She stepped into Jake's space, reaching out a slender blue hand and placing it flat, warm, and steady directly over his heart.

And then, the entire clan moved.

In a beautiful, sweeping wave of absolute love and total acceptance, hundreds of Na'vi warriors, elders, and children stepped forward. One by one, they gently placed their hands on Jake's body—on his shoulders, his arms, his back—binding him to the clan through physical connection, welcoming him as a true brother of the forest.

Grace stood right beside me, completely overwhelmed by the sheer, beautiful emotion of the moment. Tears of pure joy began to stream freely down her cheeks as she watched her life's work finally come to fruition.

Tony looked up at her, his own heart swelling with a deep, profound warmth. He reached up, his small human fingers wrapping tightly around her long blue fingers, holding on with a quiet, grounding strength.

Grace blinked, looking down at me through her tears. Tony smiled up at her—a warm, genuine, comforting smile that promised they were going to protect this world together. She let out a soft, happy sob, tightly squeezing his small hand back, pulling me close to her side as the drums of Hometree echoed into the brilliant, glowing Pandoran night.
