Chapter 63 - The Things I Refused to Admit

Evelyn's POV

I barely remembered the drive home.

The city lights had passed beyond the car window one after another, blurring together until they became nothing more than streaks of color against the glass. Liora had said a few things during the ride. I knew she did because I remembered hearing her voice.

I just couldn't remember the words.

My thoughts had been trapped somewhere else.

Or rather—

with someone else.

The car eventually rolled into the driveway, and before I knew it, I was already pushing open the front door.

The familiar warmth of the house greeted me immediately.

Usually, that comfort was enough to ease whatever stress I brought home from work.

Today, it did nothing.

Aunty Grace was sitting in the living room.

The television was on.

A cup of tea rested on the coffee table beside her.

Everything looked normal.

Painfully normal.

I walked past anyway.

Straight toward the staircase.

Straight toward my room.

I did not stop.

I did not greet her.
