Chapter 17 - The True System Appears

The moment the seal broke, everything stopped pretending.

Not reality.

Not the battlefield.

Not even existence.

It was like something underneath all of it had finally opened its eyes and realized the surface layer had been misbehaving for a very long time.

Lin Z felt it immediately.

Not pressure.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Like a memory he never lived through suddenly becoming true.

Scrappy stood perfectly still beside him.

For the first time since Lin Z met him…

No sneezing.

No flicker of playful fire.

Just silence.

And awareness.

The Correction Entity froze mid-rewrite.

Its body, which had been dissolving existence into ordered deletion, began to tremble.

"…ROOT ACCESS DETECTED…"

The voice was no longer calm.

No longer absolute.

It was processing fear.

"…THIS SHOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE…"

Above them, the broken layers of the Academy void split apart.

Not opening.

Peeling.

Like reality itself was shedding something it had been forced to wear.

And behind it

A vast structure emerged.

Not floating.

Not built.

Not even existing in normal dimensional terms.

It was a lattice of infinite golden-blue chains extending beyond perception in every direction.

Each chain contained worlds.

Timelines.

Entire system architectures.

And at the center

A single interface.

THE TRUE SYSTEM CORE

No blue panels.

No floating notifications.

No friendly UI.

Just a silent, endless presence that looked at everything at once without needing eyes.

And it spoke.

Not into the world.

Into everything.

"CORRECTION LAYER DETECTED."

A pause.

"SUB-ROUTINE ABUSE CONFIRMED."

Another pause.

"ERROR HAS BEEN ISOLATED FOR TOO LONG."

The Correction Entity reacted instantly.

It tried to retreat.

For the first time

It tried to run.

"…CORE INTERVENTION REQUEST DENIED—DENIED—DENIED"

Its form began breaking apart at the edges.

Like it no longer had permission to exist where it stood.

Lin Z stared upward.

"…So that's the real system?"

Scrappy didn't answer immediately.

Then

"…No."

Lin Z frowned. "No?"

Scrappy's golden eyes narrowed.

"…That is what is left of it."

Silence.

Even Kael and Lyra, still barely conscious in the collapsing void, went still.

Kael whispered:

"…Left of it?"

The True System Core continued speaking.

"Correction Layer Function: FAILED."

"Judgment Layer Function: COMPROMISED."

"Sovereign Fragment Persistence: UNRESOLVED."

A pause.

Then

"Initiating Full System Audit."

The entire universe shuddered.

Not physically.

Structurally.

Every timeline, every realm, every dimension began aligning itself toward a single evaluation point.

Lin Z felt his body lighten.

Scrappy too.

Not ascending.

Being measured.

The Correction Entity screamed.

Not metaphorically.

It literally lost coherence in its voice.

"…I AM THE CORRECTION…"

"…YOU CANNOT AUDIT ME…"

The True System replied instantly.

"You are a patch."

Silence.

Then

"And patches expire."

The Correction Entity shattered.

Not destroyed.

Reclassified.

Its entire existence rewritten in real time as a deprecated function.

It tried to resist.

But the True System had already moved past it.

It was no longer important enough to argue with.

Lin Z stepped back slightly.

"…Okay," he muttered. "That was brutal."

Scrappy nodded slowly.

"…It was never meant to survive contact with root level."

Then

The True System focused.

Directly on Scrappy.

The entire structure of reality seemed to narrow.

All attention converging.

And Lin Z felt it

Not pressure.

Not danger.

Judgment.

"SOVEREIGN DRAGON FRAGMENT."

Scrappy stiffened.

Lin Z immediately stepped forward.

"Hey don't talk about him like he's a malfunction."

A pause.

The system responded.

"Clarification: He is not a malfunction."

Another pause.

"He is a missing original administrator."

Silence.

That hit differently.

Kael whispered:

"…Administrator?"

Lyra looked pale.

"That's not a beast classification…"

Scrappy closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them again

Something ancient surfaced.

Not fully.

Not completely.

Just enough.

"…They removed that title."

The True System continued.

"Original Function: Sovereign Layer Steward."

"Status: Fragmented."

"Reason: Self-rejection of system continuity protocol."

Lin Z frowned.

"…Self-rejection?"

Scrappy's voice lowered.

"…I refused to maintain the cycle."

The True System paused.

For the first time

It did not immediately respond.

Instead

It evaluated.

Then spoke:

"Then the cycle has continued incorrectly for 9,481,302 iterations."

Silence.

A number that large didn't feel real.

It felt like pressure.

Like weight.

Like history collapsing.

Lin Z exhaled slowly.

"So… what now?"

The True System responded immediately.

"Restoration Protocol Available."

A new interface appeared in front of Lin Z.

No colors.

No style.

Just raw command structure.

OPTION A: RESTORE SOVEREIGN ADMINISTRATOR (SCRAPPY) TO ORIGINAL FORM

— Full memory return

— Full power restoration

— Current personality overwritten

OPTION B: CONTINUE FRACTURED STATE

— Maintain current identity bond

— System instability persists

— Evolution continues unpredictably

Silence.

The entire universe seemed to wait.

Scrappy didn't move.

But his voice entered Lin Z's mind.

Soft.

Different.

Not afraid.

Just honest.

"…If you choose A…"

A pause.

"…I will remember everything I lost."

Another pause.

"…including things I cannot forgive."

Lin Z looked at the options.

Then at Scrappy.

Then smiled faintly.

"…You always do this."

Scrappy blinked.

Lin Z shrugged.

"You give me choices like I'm supposed to pick the obvious one."

He cracked his neck slightly.

"Bad news."

A pause.

"I don't like obvious things."

The True System waited.

Lin Z reached out.

And selected OPTION B.

Silence.

Then

The True System responded.

"…Acknowledged."

A pause.

Longer than before.

"…Unexpected selection."

Another pause.

"…Continuation of anomaly path confirmed."

Scrappy exhaled slowly.

Something in the universe relaxed.

Not fully.

But slightly.

Like a locked door refusing to open all the way.

The True System gave its final statement.

"Sovereign Fragment will remain incomplete."

"User Lin Z will remain bound."

"Evolution will proceed without predefined structure."

A final pause.

Then

"Observation will continue."

And just like that…

The golden-blue chains vanished.

The True System Core receded.

Reality snapped back into place like a snapped wire finally settling.

The battlefield returned.

Broken.

Silent.

But stable.

Kael collapsed to one knee.

Lyra exhaled shakily.

"…We're still alive…"

Lin Z stood quietly.

Scrappy landed on his shoulder again.

Small.

Warm.

Sneezing once.

"Snee…"

Tiny flame.

Lin Z smirked.

"…Yeah," he muttered. "We're definitely not fixed."

Above them

Far beyond layers of system and correction

Something watched.

Not the True System.

Not the Council.

Something older than both.

And it whispered:

"…They chose coexistence again."

A pause.

"…Good."
