No one moved.
The warehouse, once filled with the sounds of battle, had fallen into an uneasy silence.
The enormous creature remained bowed before Emerald, its six crimson eyes fixed on her. Smoke drifted from its jaws, yet it made no move to attack.
"My Queen," it repeated, its ancient voice reverberating through the fractured building.
The Shadow Guard exchanged confused glances.
The Hunters tightened their grips on their weapons.
Even Commander Darius seemed caught off guard.
Emerald swallowed hard.
"You... know me?"
The creature's eyes dimmed slightly.
"I knew your bloodline."
Fragments of green light flickered across its stony body. The violent crimson veins that had covered it moments before seemed to retreat, replaced by faint emerald patterns.
Captain Selene's smile disappeared.
"No," she muttered. "It should still be under the Queen's control."
Lyra's eyes widened.
"The Queen never controlled it," she whispered. "She only broke its prison."
The Guardian slowly rose to its full height.
"I am Varak," it said. "First Guardian of the Emerald Throne."
The name echoed through the warehouse.
Darius lowered his spear.
"I've only read of Varak in the oldest Hunter records."
Emerald looked between the two of them.
"You know about him?"
Darius nodded slowly.
"Our history called him the Devourer.....the beast that nearly destroyed two worlds."
Varak's deep voice rumbled.
"History remembers only the ending... never the truth."
The Guardian turned toward Emerald.
"I was created to protect the royal family, not destroy it."
Before anyone could respond, Selene let out a bitter laugh.
"What a touching reunion."
She stepped forward, her twin obsidian blades glowing with dark energy.
"This changes nothing."
She raised a small crystal from beneath her cloak.
Unlike the first, this crystal glowed a deep violet.
Lyra's face drained of color.
"Selene... don't."
"You know what that is?" Noah asked.
Lyra nodded.
"A Blood Crystal."
"It drains the life force of anyone with royal blood."
Selene crushed it without hesitation.
A violent wave of purple energy burst through the warehouse.
Emerald cried out.
It felt as though invisible chains had wrapped around her body, squeezing tighter with every heartbeat.
Her glowing mark dimmed.
She fell to one knee.
"Emerald!" Sara shouted, rushing toward her.
Varak roared.
The sound shook the entire warehouse.
"No one touches the heir!"
He slammed one massive paw into the ground.
A wall of emerald crystal erupted between Emerald and the Shadow Guard, forcing everyone backward.
Selene snarled.
"So the stories were true."
Varak's six eyes locked onto her.
"They were incomplete."
The Guardian lunged.
Selene barely escaped as his claws carved deep trenches through the concrete.
The remaining Shadow Guard scattered in panic.
Darius turned to his Hunters.
"Fall back!"
"But Commander?.."
"Now!"
The Hunters obeyed immediately, pulling the recruits with them toward the safer side of the warehouse.
Meanwhile, Emerald struggled to breathe.
The Blood Crystal's magic spread through her veins like ice.
Everything around her blurred.
Then...
A warm hand rested gently against her forehead.
She looked up.
Standing before her was a woman dressed in flowing emerald robes.
Her long black hair shimmered like the night sky, and her bright green eyes were filled with kindness.
The woman smiled softly.
"Mother..."
The word escaped Emerald's lips before she could stop it.
The woman nodded.
"I cannot remain long."
Tears filled Emerald's eyes.
"I've wanted to meet you my whole life."
"And I have watched over you every day."
Emerald reached out, but her hand passed through the glowing figure.
"You were never truly alone."
The Queen's voice became more serious.
"The curse your aunt placed upon you was never meant only to suppress your power."
"What was it for?"
"To sever your bond with the Emerald Throne."
Emerald frowned.
"The throne?"
"It is alive."
The words hung in the air.
"It chooses its ruler....not by strength, but by heart."
The vision around them shifted.
Emerald found herself standing inside a magnificent throne room bathed in green light.
At its center stood a throne carved from crystal and ancient roots.
It pulsed like a living heartbeat.
"Only the true heir can awaken it."
Her mother's spirit looked toward the throne.
"When you sit upon it, the curse will be broken forever."
Emerald's hope was quickly replaced by doubt.
"My aunt will never let me reach it."
"She won't have a choice."
Her mother smiled.
"Because you won't face her alone."
The vision began to fade.
"Wait!"
Emerald reached out desperately.
"I have so many questions."
"You'll find your answers in the kingdom."
Her mother's voice grew faint.
"And remember this, my daughter..."
The throne room dissolved into light.
"The greatest strength of a queen is never her magic."
Emerald's eyes slowly opened.
She was back in the warehouse.
Varak stood protectively before her.
Sara knelt beside her.
Noah helped her to her feet.
The Blood Crystal's magic had vanished.
Emerald looked around at the people surrounding her.
Her friends.
Her family.
Her allies.
She finally understood what her mother meant.
The throne wasn't waiting for the strongest ruler.
It was waiting for the one who never stood alone.
Across the battlefield, Captain Selene wiped blood from the corner of her mouth.
She looked toward a Shadow Guard soldier.
"Retreat."
The soldier blinked in surprise.
"But we can still...."
"Retreat!"
The remaining Shadow Guard vanished into the smoke as quickly as they had appeared.
Within moments, they were gone.
An uneasy calm settled over the ruined warehouse.
Darius looked at Emerald for a long moment.
"The Queen knows the Guardian has recognized you."
"What does that mean?"
His expression darkened.
"It means she will stop waiting for you to come to her."
He glanced toward the distant horizon beyond the shattered wall.
"She's coming herself."
A cold wind swept through the broken warehouse.
Far away, deep within the Underworld Palace, the false Queen stood from her throne.
The emerald jewel in her crown cracked.
She closed her eyes.
Then smiled.
"So...,"she whispered.
"My dear niece has finally awakened."
The hunt was over.
The war for the throne had begun.
