The Red Corsairs strike cruiser bearing Khârn swept past the jagged periphery of the Great Rift like a meteor laden with the stench of ruin.
Deep within the vessel's shadow-veiled holds, Khârn radiated a frantic, near-frenzied aura of zealotry. It was an unquenchable, maddening hunger for slaughter and conflict, as if he were stepping onto the threshold of the grandest, most exquisite carnival of violence his existence had ever known. His cybernetically augmented musculature was coiled taut, and the heavy chainaxe in his grip let loose periodic, low-frequency growls, its machine-spirit sharing the Butcher's agonizing impatience for the impending harvest of blood.
Guided by the telemetry of a vanguard scout ship that had been shadowing the Carachles, the Red Corsairs effortlessly closed the distance and matched velocities with their quarry.
A volley of boarding torpedoes punched violently through the armored hide of the captured vessel.
The sight that greeted the boarders was a chaotic tapestry of butchery. Within the echoing companionways of the great ship, the Ork vanguard wielded their massive choppas and heavy chain-blades with wild abandon, hunting down fleeing Imperial Navy ratings and voidsmen through the shifting dark. The broken, residual Imperial defense echelons had completely abandoned any pretense of repelling the renegade Astartes, their cohesion shattered by the alien onslaught.
The shrieking of laboring chain-blades blended with the deafening, bass-heavy roars of the greenskins, turning the lower decks into a screaming underworld.
Khârn observed the chaotic display of viscera and gave vent to a low, satisfied laugh. Then, hefting Gorechild, the relic weapon personally blessed by the Blood God, he plunged headlong into the fray.
The surviving Imperial voidsmen, their defensive lines long broken by the xenos, suddenly found themselves gripped by an unaccountable, blinding fury. Though they had not yet cast eyes upon the Betrayer himself, the metaphysical weight of Khorne's dark patronship was already warping the local space.
Mortals of fragile constitution and faltering courage degenerated into screaming maniacs. Driven mad by the low, scraping whispers of Chaos and an unbearable tide of wrath, several ratings threw back their heads and shrieked into the smoke:
"Blood for the Blood God! Skulls for the Skull Throne!"
Without warning, they swung their crude tools and laspistols, striking out indiscriminately at greenskins and their own crewmates alike.
Yet, even as the corrupting influence of the Blood God inflamed their terror into madness, the material reality of the battlefield remained unchanged. The Ork vanguard, veterans who had fought through the suffocating horror of the Tyranid Hive Fleets alongside Steeltoof, were far too iron-clad and immense. Every sweeping arc of their massive hydraulic power claws and oversized chain-weapons left a widening wake of severed limbs and arterial spray.
Khârn advanced through the primary corridors, a disciplined phalanx of Red Corsairs Heretic Astartes maintaining a tight formation behind him. These renegades brought their bolters to bear, unleashing disciplined volleys into both the remaining Imperial crew and the encroaching greenskins. They were here to reclaim their prize; by right of plunder, this capital ship belonged to Huron Blackheart.
Khârn, however, cared nothing for the logistics of the Corsairs. Borne aloft by the blessings of the Blood God, his hyper-attuned senses could clearly detect the sickening, indulgent reek of Slaanesh's favor up ahead.
CLANG!
The reinforced alloy bulkhead was violently breached as the armored torso of a dead Ork was hurled through it, tearing a ragged gap in the metal.
VREEE-WHINE!
A master-crafted power sword, slick with clotting gore, sliced effortlessly through the ruined meat before cleaving the remainder of the buckled hatch aside.
THUD. THUD.
The heavy, rhythmic thud of power-armored sabatons echoed down the grand gallery. Khârn stepped over the threshold, his crimson plate completely drenched in green xenos vital fluids.
At the epicenter of the grand chamber, Lucius the Eternal had been brought low. His broken form was suspended in the air, hoisted effortlessly by the throat in the grip of a towering Ork vanguard leader. The Champion of Slaanesh's once-resplendent, baroque armor was cracked and defiled, his own dark blood seeping continuously from the ruptured seals.
"Hmph. Nimble humie," the Ork rumbled.
Though the dark grace of Slaanesh had enabled Lucius to elegantly disembowel dozens of the Ork vanguard, he had ultimately been overwhelmed by the crushing physical mass of the elite greenskins. With a casual, brutal clench, the massive hydraulic power claw crushed Lucius's skull into splinters, and the Ork tossed the limp, ruined corpse onto the deck plates like a sack of offal.
The xenos's face split into a mocking, wide-fanged grin.
Yet, the soul of Lucius did not scatter into the aether. His spirit, sated with an unholy mixture of humiliated pride and venomous spite, clung to the material world like a starving ghoul, instantly coiling into the essence of the xenos who had slain him.
The massive Ork suddenly stiffened, letting out a guttural, agonized bellow as his colossal frame twisted unnaturally. Wisps of emerald Waaagh! energy crackled across his green hide, the primal gestalt power of his race mobilizing instinctively to purge the parasitic, decadent sorcery of Slaanesh from his flesh.
The alien's veins surged like black cables, his muscled features contorting into a mask of pure agony. But Lucius remained utterly indifferent to the creature's biological resistance; the specific curse laid upon his soul by the Prince of Pleasure began its inexorable work, dissolving the Ork's identity, devouring his memories, and consuming his very spirit.
"Hahaha! Futile... so futile! Your prideful satisfaction feeds me!"
A series of weeping, distorted human countenances began to warp and bubble through the green flesh of the Ork, mocking the surrounding xenos in Lucius's own sibilant, aristocratic voice. As the creature's dying wails faded into nothingness, Lucius fully supplanted the xenos' biology, stepping forth reborn into the world.
Witnessing this grotesque transmutative resurrection, Khârn let loose a booming, derisive roar of laughter from beneath his blasphemously spiked, crimson helm, a sound that cut through the thunder of battle with unadulterated contempt.
"Look at what you have become, Lucius! Your rebirth is the act of a pathetic jester! You are a traveling circus unto yourself upon the field of battle!"
With that final taunt, Khârn brought Gorechild down in a vicious, sweeping arc. The monomolecular teeth of his axe screamed as they spun, surrounded by the unholy, twitching aura of Khorne's favor, a light that resembled writhing, ethereal leeches hungry for death. In an instant, the Betrayer tore into the remaining Ork vanguard.
Khârn's martial prowess was a masterclass in industrialized slaughter; every movement was a seamless, terrifying synthesis of brute velocity and absolute kinetic weight. He carved a path through the towering Orks like a storm through a field of wheat, his form blurring between points of impact. Every displacement of his axe brought forth a torrential downpour of dark blood as the formidable xenos guards were dismembered before they could register his approach.
Gorechild chewed through layered armor, dense bone, and dense muscle with terrifying ease, scattering heavy organs across the deck and shattering the Orks' heavy iron weapons into shards. Khârn's eyes burned with an unholy, joyous conflagration, a fanatic devotion to the act of the kill that reduced the entire universe down to the next skull before him.
In stark, clumsy contrast was the performance of the newly reborn Lucius.
Relying on his encyclopedic mastery of the blade and millennia of martial memory, he attempted to glide through the remaining Orks like a dancer. Yet, though his technique remained flawless, the unfamiliar, cumbersome mass of his newly stolen Ork physique was entirely unsuited to his elegant style.
His reflexes were subtly out of alignment with his instinctual timing, though his raw physical strength was now immense. Faced with a coordinated press of heavy choppas, his once-finesse-driven swordplay was forced to degrade into wide, desperate hacks.
"WAAAAAAAGH!"
A massive Ork vanguard roared, bringing down a heavy, twin-handed iron cleaver with a momentum that whistled through the choked air.
Lucius attempted to pivot, but his borrowed bulk failed him. The cleaver sheared past his shoulder, the sheer force of the near-miss buffeting his frame. Snapping his blade forward in a counter-thrust born of pure instinct, he drove the point toward the xenos's ribcage.
But the Ork's face split into a cunning, battle-savvy grin. Catching the incoming power sword cleanly within the iron teeth of his hydraulic power claw, the xenos locked the weapon in place before driving a massive, armored boot squarely into Lucius's midsection.
The sluggish, uncoordinated Lucius was lifted off his feet by the impact and sent crashing backward.
CRASH!
With a heavy, metallic boom, Lucius's borrowed xenos frame smashed into the bulkheads of the gallery before sliding down to sit heavily in the gathering gore.
