The drive had taken forever.
I still had no idea whose funeral we were attending. Every time I worked up the courage to ask Kasteil, the words died in my throat. He had been… different these past few days. Quieter than usual.
And Kasteil was already a quiet man.
All he had said was to wear black.
So I did — a simple black outfit, nothing fancy. We left the pack at four in the evening on Friday and drove through the night. By the time we arrived, it was nearly five on Saturday morning.
Kasteil carried a large bouquet of flowers. He had bought one for me too. Mine was smaller but still beautiful, a delicate mix of white and soft lavender.
The moment we stepped out of the car, I realized the journey wasn't over.
We had to climb a mountain.
A whole damn mountain.
