Chapter 16 - Confirmed—Furina Is Merely a Human (Revised)

Paimon countered on Lumine's behalf: "First of all, you could be some other long-lived species with a naturally long lifespan. And there are also other methods of extending one's lifespan, such as a curse..."

[Ningguang: A sound deduction. On the continent of Teyvat, many species possess extremely long lifespans. But what kind of curse could extend a human's life?]

[Dainsleif: I was once a human of Khaenri'ah. Cursed with immortality, I have wandered the continent of Teyvat for five hundred years.]

[Ningguang: So curses that grant long life truly do exist. Could it be that Furina is indeed a human bearing a curse?]

[Furina: No, I am not. How could I possibly be human?]

[Video Compilation System: Lady Furina, I am a power from beyond this world. Nothing here can be perceived by the Heavenly Principles. No memories from this place will remain within Irminsul. Teyvat's past, present, and future have all already been determined. Here, you may set down your mask.]

[Paimon: Wait a moment—is this confirmation that Furina is not the Hydro Archon?]

[Ningguang: Without a doubt, yes. Furina is a human masquerading as a god.]

[The Knave: I don't understand. Why would Furina disguise herself as a god?]

[Furina: Video Compilation System—that is your name, yes? I... I would like to ask—has Fontaine been saved?]

[Video Compilation System: The answer lies just ahead. You may see for yourself.]

In the video.

Furina spread her hands wide and countered: "Who told you such a notion? That Knave from the Fatui? You would even cite the words of a Fatui Harbinger just to slander me?"

Lumine firmly rebutted, "Who said it is not important. What matters is what the truth actually is."

Neuvillette also sank into thought: "A curse? I originally assumed the aura emanating from a god was akin to a kind of curse. Now it seems to have nothing to do with godhood. Could it merely be a simple curse?"

Neuvillette's words corroborated Lumine's speculation—he had only ever known one god.

Lumine looked at Furina: "So, Furina, you are merely a cursed human, aren't you?"

The audience was once again thrown into shock.

"So Lady Furina is only human?"

"Indeed, human and god—the naked eye cannot tell them apart."

[Charlotte: What a brilliant line of attack! Lady Furina has completely lost the upper hand.]

[Lumine: I didn't expect my future self to be so aggressive.]

[Paimon: Me neither.]

[Arataki Itto: Trials in Fontaine are so fun. Way more entertaining than beetle fights.]

[Furina: Arataki Itto, was it? You've mocked me repeatedly. When you come to Fontaine, I'll send you straight to the defendant's stand.]

[Arataki Itto: Sure, sure! When the time comes, I'll put up a good fight against you too.]

[Wriothesley: The courtroom is no place for amusement. Those judged will be sent to prison. However, prison life isn't so bad. I'll welcome your arrival at the Fortress of Meropide.]

[Arataki Itto: P-Prison? Then maybe I'd better not go.]

The Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale began tilting once again in Lumine's direction, lending a degree of confirmation to her challenge.

Furina: "All right, don't start celebrating just yet. Even if I admit to bearing a curse, that doesn't necessarily prove I'm human."

"Furthermore, the distinction between humans and gods lies in divine authority. Gods can accomplish things humans cannot—that is why they are called gods."

"Over the centuries, many of my divine miracles have manifested across the land of Fontaine—such as the Oratrice Mecanique d'Analyse Cardinale before you and the Indemnitium upon which each of your daily lives depends."

Lumine fell into thought and quickly found a lead: "But earlier, when the Oratrice inexplicably declared Childe guilty, you didn't know what was going on either, did you? You are not the Oratrice's creator at all."

[Tartaglia: Wait—I went to Fontaine? And I was found guilty? I feel like I'm missing a lot of the story!]

[Video Compilation System: If you wish to know, then I shall oblige.]

With that, the broadcast cut away. The screen showed the scene of Childe's trial. With Lumine's help, Childe had been found not guilty—yet the Oratrice had delivered a guilty verdict.

Furina had no idea what was happening and tried to slip away. Childe had unleashed his full power, summoning his Foul Legacy Transformation, only to be struck down in a single blow by Neuvillette.

[Arataki Itto: Taken out in one hit! That fancy armor looked really cool, but it was totally useless!]

[Sigewinne: Neuvillette is so cool!]

[Wriothesley: Neuvillette's power is unfathomable.]

[Tartaglia: Well, this... this is indeed a bit embarrassing. But losing to the Hydro Dragon Sovereign isn't shameful, right?]

[The Knave: Not shameful...]

[La Signora: Not shameful...]

[Tartaglia: Wait a second—I mean it! But hold on, I'm not the focus of this video, am I?]

[Neuvillette: From the footage, one can indeed see that Furina had no understanding of the Oratrice's anomaly.]

[Tartaglia: Yes, yes! Focus on Furina!]

[Lumine: That pose you were in sprawled on the ground—it was pretty cool.]

[Tartaglia: ...]

[Video Compilation System: Resuming playback of "The Sinner's Finale."]

In the video.

Furina immediately mounted a rebuttal: "Regarding that matter, I stated very clearly at the time—a god's judgment is not something mortals can comprehend, nor does it require explanation."

Neuvillette cut off Furina's speech: "No, Lady Furina. I must remind you to recognize the present circumstances. In this courtroom, the trial itself stands above all else. Before you are a god, you are first and foremost today's defendant. If you do not truthfully state what you know in accordance with the rules of trial, the situation will become extremely unfavorable to you."

Furina answered angrily: "To use such rhetoric to coerce me..."

Neuvillette answered: "This is not rhetoric, Lady Furina. Everyone ought to hold the rules of this courtroom in awe."

Lumine and Paimon pressed their advantage: "At the time, you had no idea what was going on with Childe's guilty verdict. You didn't even understand the structure or principles of the Oratrice. The divine miracles you speak of should be attributed to the true Hydro Archon."

Furina quickly responded: "The true Hydro Archon? What is that supposed to mean? I indeed don't know exactly what happened with Childe. His guilty verdict was a unilateral judgment by the Oratrice, and it has operated independently since its creation."

"Just because a god's creation has a problem doesn't prove the god is fake!"

Paimon folded her arms and spoke angrily, "Still twisting words. It seems she's convinced we can't produce proof that the Oratrice doesn't belong to her..."

Lumine looked at Furina and asked, "Let's set aside those divine miracles. Can you demonstrate a god's power right here and now?"

Furina: "A god's power? There are so many citizens in the audience. I can't recklessly use the power a god grants..."

Neuvillette immediately interjected: "If necessary, I can extend a protective barrier over the audience."

Furina spread her hands and stammered: "That... that won't be necessary..."

Lumine pressed the advantage: "Just a small display of Hydro elemental power would be enough. That's something even a human with a Vision can do."

Furina was suddenly stuck, at a loss for words.
