"I just wanted to reminisce about my past!" the tall man laughed, seemingly unfazed by being called a disgusting werewolf. "Honestly, you really do look just like her. No wonder that old bastard Victor wanted to keep you by his side."
"How do you know all this?" Selena stared at the man in shock. She knew a small part of why she had been favored by the family elders, but for a sworn enemy to know such a closely guarded secret of her own family was utterly abnormal.
"House Victor is already on the brink of collapse. Have you still not realized what kind of 'talent' your family has produced?"
"A traitor?" Selena spat out the word through gritted teeth. Now that she understood, all her hatred was focused on this new figure. Sometimes, the one who betrays you is more hateful than the enemy.
"Who is he?"
Seeing Selena bite her lip until it was nearly raw, the werewolf knew she was desperate to grind that traitor's bones to dust. He chuckled casually, revealing his sharp canines.
"You don't need to know who he is. Because... the dead have no need to be disturbed."
Traitors were always despised by both sides. Yet, many lived comfortably. Of course, there were always exceptions—those who had to be utterly eradicated.
Selena grasped the meaning behind his words. At that moment, the dying wails of her kin and the crisp cracks of gunfire echoed in her ears. The reality of what she was facing finally sank in.
This was the complete annihilation of her family. Whether they were the remnants or the traitor, there was only one outcome: death.
Such a bloody conclusion was unheard of in vampire society. In her centuries of life, she had never encountered anything like this. It was a devastating blow.
Bright red blood trickled from her lips, making her look as sorrowful as a blood-weeping cuckoo.
"Why are you doing this to us? What did we ever do wrong?"
"You did nothing wrong!" A look of grim satisfaction spread across the werewolf's face—the joy of a long-awaited revenge. "You're just paying the price for Victor's mistakes. When the foolish patriarch sins, his children must suffer the consequences. Victor already died by my hand. Now, it's your turn."
At this, Selena closed her eyes once more and tilted her pale neck, exposing it. Since things had come to this, she knew there was no hope left. All she could do now was spread her arms and embrace death.
But the werewolf did not strike. Or rather, he couldn't bring himself to do it. Selena bore such a striking resemblance to the woman in his deepest memories that he found it impossible to harm her. He hesitated, then knelt before her.
"Listen," he said. "You have one chance to save your life. It all depends on whether you can seize it."
"What scheme are you plotting now?" Selena's eyes snapped open at the mention of a chance to live. But the next moment, they dimmed again. How could a werewolf ever help a vampire? This must be another trap.
Compared to being toyed with and humiliated, the strong-willed Selena would rather die a quick death.
Seeing her stubborn expression, the werewolf seemed to lose his focus. His mind drifted back to a night hundreds of years ago. The same stubbornness, the same strength. The only difference was that it was another woman who looked exactly like her.
"Listen," he said. "The Dark Council has received a decree from the highest authority. House Victor collaborated with the Great Rebel, and you hold a divine artifact entrusted to your family by him. The Council needs that artifact. If you tell me where it is, you still have a chance to survive."
"What artifact? I know nothing about it!" Selena replied coldly. She was just a warrior and had never cared for the clan's secrets. The werewolf was sorely mistaken if he thought he could extract the family's secrets from her.
"I asked Victor," the werewolf sneered. "The bastard refused to lower his rotting head even in death. He's clearly hiding a secret. But even if he wanted to talk, I'd never have given him the chance."
A cruel laugh escaped the werewolf's lips, his face contorted with pure hatred for the vampire patriarch.
Selena didn't know the nature of the feud between the werewolf and Victor, but she knew it was all over now. House Victor had become a memory, and their vendetta no longer mattered.
"Kill me," she spat. "I know nothing. And even if I did, I wouldn't tell you."
"It's not that hard, you know?" The werewolf grabbed her face, his voice a low growl. "Just think. Does that pyramid-shaped thing filled with red blood exist? And if so, where is it? If you can give me the answer, you might just save yourself."
He glanced at the few remaining women and children of Selena's clan.
"Perhaps," he added, "you could save more than just yourself."
At these words, Selena's pupils constricted. She had always been an outcast among her own kind, her ties to the clan tenuous at best. Yet, to Victor, she had been fiercely loyal. She understood what the clan meant to him, and that was why she continued to fight for them even after his death—to honor the debt she owed him for raising her.
"Well? Perhaps my words will help jog your memory. What do you say?" the werewolf chuckled, noticing the shift in Selena's expression.
Selena's face clouded with conflicting emotions. She watched as the werewolf waved his hand, halting the ongoing slaughter. Suddenly, every pair of eyes was fixed on her. A crushing weight pressed down on her heart.
With no other choice, she spoke. "I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but over a hundred years ago, someone did entrust an object to Victor."
"Is it the divine artifact?" a vampire pressed forward, his eagerness palpable.
In contrast, the werewolves' reaction was far more muted. They seemed completely uninterested in this so-called divine artifact, their eyes instead scanning the trembling vampires with predatory intent. Compared to the artifact, they seemed much more interested in slaughtering their sworn enemies.
"I don't know. Victor never let me ask about other things," Selena said, shaking her head. "I only saw it once. After that, I never saw it again."
"What else do you remember about it?" The vampire shoved the werewolf beside Selena aside, his voice urgent as he pressed her for more.
"I don't remember clearly. I just recall that day... Victor scolded me. I think I was drawn to the light emanating from the box, and I lost a bit of control." Selena's expression turned vacant, her eyes clouding over. Yet, this very look convinced everyone that her memory was genuine.
Combining Selena's account with what he already knew, the lead vampire finally revealed a look of ecstatic joy.
"It's her. It has to be. The Holy Blood... the very thing mentioned in the Dark Council's decree. Tell me, where is it?"
"I don't know. Victor hid it away after that."
"But that old fool Victor is dead!"
"That's your problem, not mine. You're the ones who killed him!"
The vampire was desperate to learn the location of the Holy Blood, yet in his verbal sparring with Selena, they were merely circling back to a dead man. This was intolerable. He drew his gun and pressed it against Selena's head.
"I'll give you one last chance. You'd better think of something useful. Otherwise, you'll be the one joining Victor in the grave."
Selena remained impassive under the vampire's threat. But the werewolf couldn't stand it anymore. He tried to step forward, but a companion restrained him, gripping his shoulder. He whipped his head around to see a burly black man shaking his head slowly.
"I—" Lucien started to break free, but the man's next words froze him in his tracks.
"You are the King of the Wolf Clan. Every move you make affects our entire future. We've finally joined the Council, no longer forced to hide like rats. Are you really willing to throw away our future on a sudden impulse?"
His voice was barely a whisper, yet Lucien heard every word with piercing clarity. The words ignited a fierce struggle within him.
Lucien's desire to save Selena stemmed solely from her uncanny resemblance to his deceased lover. In truth, he shared no real bond with her—a fact the burly man knew all too well. That was why he had stepped in to stop Lucien's reckless impulse.
As the ruler of their people, Lucien's every action held the clan's survival in the balance. As both a subject and a friend, the man could not stand by and let him make such a catastrophic mistake.
Ultimately, Lucien was a wise ruler. He knew exactly where the line was. The Wolf Clan had only just joined the Council; they lacked the power and had no reason to throw away their future over a single woman. He knew this all too well, and his decision was swift.
Turning away, Lucien didn't spare Selena another glance. He faced his Wolf Clan kin—they were his future, not some vampire woman.
The vampire leader watched his every move. A strange smile touched his lips as he turned to Selena.
"It seems no one is willing to protect you anymore. So, will you give me your answer now?"
Selena's face turned ashen. She closed her eyes and murmured, "I only know this much. You'll have to ask Victor for the rest."
"Then, my apologies."
A gunshot rang out instantly. But the outcome was not what anyone expected.
