She saw it in the mirror and the mirror nearly paid for it.
The morning had started normally enough. She had woken up in the council wing, in the chair that had been brought in at some point, wrapped in something warm that had not been there when she fell asleep which meant he had arranged it which she was not going to think about right now, and the early light was coming through the high window in thin determined lines and the dragon throne was sitting in its place on the dais looking as ancient and unbothered as it always looked.
She had padded back to their chambers while the palace was still in the quiet of early morning, while the corridors were empty and the only sounds were the distant ones of the kitchens beginning their day. She had gone to wash her face and she had looked up at the mirror and she had gone very still.
Then she had gone the other kind of still. The kind that preceded something loud.
