Chapter 17 - The man beneath The Demon

My eyes, dry and cracked from exhaustion, slowly opened. I could feel the stale lubrication coating my eyelids separate as my vision gradually returned, the darkness before me slowly being replaced by the faint light of the rising sun in the distance.

The first thing I noticed was the warmth.

The fire.

It was still burning beside me, crackling and sparking just as it had before I surrendered myself to sleep. The flames danced calmly, consuming the wood I had gathered, almost as if no time had passed since I closed my eyes.

But that was impossible.

A fire did not simply continue without fuel.

A fire did not preserve itself.

Yet somehow, it remained.

My eyes shifted around the clearing, expecting to see the familiar figure sitting across from me.

But there was nothing.

Yue...

Was gone.

I remained still for a moment, my mind attempting to understand what my eyes were seeing. There were no footprints leading away from the camp, no broken branches, no marks left behind from someone walking through the forest.

Nothing.

As if she had never been here.

I slowly pushed myself upright, my body still carrying the weight of the journey. My gaze wandered across the empty space where she had rested, searching for any sign that could explain her disappearance.

But the forest gave me no answer.

Only silence.

I looked back toward the fire, watching the flames continue to burn.

How was it still going?

And why did it feel as if something had changed while I slept?

I turned around, expecting nothing.

Yet my eyes were met with something that should not have been there.

A passage.

Between the trees.

The forest itself had changed.

The endless walls of wood and leaves that had surrounded me moments ago had separated, creating a path that stretched deeper into the unknown.

I did not understand why, but I felt drawn toward it.

Not by curiosity.

Not by reason.

Something deeper.

An energy that called to me, something I wanted to reach out and grasp within my own hands. Every instinct told me to be cautious, yet my body continued forward as if resistance itself was meaningless.

I walked.

The moment I entered, the trees behind me shifted.

The passage closed.

The way back disappeared.

I was no longer walking through the forest.

I was walking through something that had chosen me.

I could not escape.

I could not force my way out.

And for the first time in a long while...

I did not know what waited ahead.

Dread.

Fear.

Confusion.

My muscles tightened as I continued deeper, the sound of my footsteps echoing between the trees. The snapping of branches beneath my feet followed every step I took.

But then I noticed it.

There was another sound.

Almost identical.

Almost perfect.

Yet slightly wrong.

Two footsteps.

One belonging to me.

And another trying to become me.

Eventually, the trees parted.

A clearing.

An open field hidden within the depths of the forest.

The ground was ruined. Rocks and boulders lay shattered across the earth, cracks spreading through them as if something had violently forced its way through. The sand beneath my feet was blackened and charred, and the trees surrounding the clearing leaned away from the center as if even they refused to approach.

The air itself felt heavy.

Thick.

Like every breath had to be forced into my lungs.

Then I heard it.

Clanging.

Violent trembling.

A frantic vibration.

The sound of something desperate to be released.

Anger.

All of it came from the center of the clearing.

"There..."

My voice escaped quietly.

"There you are."

For a moment, I expected relief.

I expected the feeling of returning to something familiar.

My other half.

My weapon.

But what I felt was not joy.

It was uncertainty.

I stepped forward.

Then stopped.

Not because I chose to.

Because something stopped me.

A voice entered the clearing.

"You long for its return."

It was emotionless.

Not cold.

Not cruel.

Simply unnatural.

"You dream of holding it again."

A pause.

"But did you ever wonder..."

"Did it long for you?"

My eyes narrowed.

The voice continued.

"You spent your entire life searching for a weapon powerful enough to challenge the heavens."

The sound seemed to come from everywhere.

"And yet..."

"You never wondered what would happen if that weapon surpassed you."

A silence.

"What would happen..."

"If your weapon searched for an owner greater than yourself?"

Then Sky Piercer moved.

The halberd shifted violently against the earth.

Its blade turned.

Not toward me.

Toward the darkness between the trees.

Something was there.

Something that had been watching.

The tip of the weapon lowered, prepared to strike.

And then...

Movement.

A sudden, frantic scurrying through the forest.

Something fled.

Not because it was discovered.

Because it recognized what had discovered it.

The forest had prepared a trap.

It had created a path.

It had separated me from everything familiar.

But it had not accounted for one thing.

What truly rested within Sky Piercer.

The weapon pulled.

Not me.

The weapon.

A force beyond my control dragged me away from the clearing, through twisting roots and endless darkness until I was thrown into a hidden cave buried deep beneath the forest.

The walls were covered in thorns, vines, and ancient branches that had grown over forgotten stone.

Within the deepest corner sat something hidden.

A shrine.

Old.

Forgotten.

Almost consumed by the roots surrounding it.

A small opening above allowed a thin stream of moonlight to enter, illuminating the darkness just enough to reveal the emptiness within.

Yet despite the silence...

I felt watched.

Not by one presence.

More than one.

Two sets of eyes stared back at me from the darkness.

Then, a faint glow began to emerge from the darkness.

At first, I thought it was merely a reflection.

A trick of the light.

But it grew.

Brighter.

Closer.

The entire cave seemed to respond to its presence, the ancient roots covering the walls slowly twitching as if something dormant beneath the earth had awakened.

Confusion crossed my expression.

Then suddenly...

The wall shattered.

Stone erupted outward as a massive figure tore through the cave itself, forcing its way inside with enough force to shake the ground beneath my feet.

A tiger.

But not one that belonged to this world.

Its fur carried the radiance of emerald light, each strand glowing with an unnatural vitality. Wherever its paws touched the ground, life returned. The dead roots surrounding the cave awakened and twisted toward it, feeding off the energy it released.

Yet its presence was not peaceful.

It was hunger.

The creature lowered itself, its enormous body pressing against the earth as it stared directly at me.

It recognized me.

Not my name.

Not my title.

Something deeper.

Its mouth slowly opened, revealing rows of enormous fangs.

"You have spent your entire existence proving your strength."

Its voice echoed through the cave, carrying both curiosity and amusement.

"You shattered armies."

"You stood before gods."

"You carried a weapon that made heaven itself hesitate."

The tiger stepped closer, its tongue running across its teeth as the cave continued to glow around it.

"But..."

Its eyes narrowed.

"What exists beneath all of that?"

A pause.

"When the battlefield is silent..."

"When no one watches..."

"When there is no weapon in your hand..."

The creature's grin widened.

"Who are you when you are alone?"

I stared at the creature.

For once...

I had no immediate response.

My hand moved instinctively toward where Sky Piercer should have been.

But there was nothing.

No weight.

No familiar grip.

No weapon that had followed me through blood, war, and the heavens themselves.

Only my own hand.

The tiger watched.

It noticed.

And it smiled.

"Interesting..."

Its voice carried through the cave as the roots around us continued to twist and grow.

"Even now..."

"You search for something outside yourself."

The words lingered.

I looked down at my empty palm.

And for the first time in years...

I wondered if I truly knew what I was holding onto.

The tiger lowered its head, its glowing eyes staring directly into mine.

"Tell me, Lu Bu."

The cave fell silent.

"Without the halberd..."

"Without the title..."

"Without the fear you have carved into the world..."

A pause.

"What remains?"

The flames of green light surrounding the creature suddenly disappeared.

The darkness swallowed the cave.

And then...

A second pair of eyes opened behind me.
