Chapter 38 - Betrayal [1]

"One down, one more to go."

Lennie said, her glowing crimson gaze shifting smoothly away from the collapsed wall and locking directly onto Caster.

"You're not the least bit worried about your friend?"

Caster let out a short, cynical laugh, short and mocking.

"Hahaha! What a funny way to fraze it. Since when has there be friendship in cooperation?"

"Wow that's cold, even for you."

*I need to finish this fast.*

She thought, a sudden wave of fatigue hitting her system.

A small trickle of blood began to seep from the corner of her noise.

She casually raised the back of her hand, wiping the crimson droplets

"You don't have to do this you know? You could just surrender peacefully with no harm."

Caster said, his violet eyes tracking the blood.

Taking out multiple spheres from his pocket and throwing them on the ground.

-Thud!

"I truly do not wish to hurt yo—"

-Splat!

The sudden, wet sound of tearing flesh cut him off entirely.

Lennie's eyes widened in absolute shock.

Caster stiffened, his sentence.

Very slowly, his head tilted downward.

He looked at his fingers, watching in a daze as dark, sticky droplets of blood began to drip onto his pristine black leather gloves.

His heart rate violently spiked.

Pounding frantically against his ribs as his mind completely failed to process what had just happened.

"You talk… too… damn much… you know that…?"

A gritty voice growled from behind him.

"…"

Caster choked out, his vision instantly turning blurry and dark at the edges.

His knees buckled, his elegant cane clattering uselessly against the stone.

Lennie stared in utter, paralyzed surprise past Caster's collapsing frame.

Standing directly behind the man, holding a dripping, serrated dagger coated in a sickly green fluid, was the mohawk man.

He had plunged a blade directly through Caster's back.

***

"I did it, boss.!"

The mohawk man said in between breaths.

A tired grin stretching across his face before his eyes rolled back.

Thud-!

He collapsed face-first onto the cobblestones from sheer exhaustion.

Lennie turned to look at the rubble he had kicked the boss.

that interruptions are out of the way… let's continue where we left off."

The boss emerged from the rubble.

Be it his once white shirt now had brown stains and a bit tattered.

Same could be said about his coat his hat had fell down amidst the rubble.

He swiftly took out his read coat.

"Only fools are bold enough to interrupt a pirate's quarrel."

He said looking at the Caster's almost lifeless expression.

As he spat down.

"Now… where we're we?"

The man turned to look at Lennie.

Lennie stood silent with an unreadable expression.

Slowly, she raised her right hand.

She reached over and gripped the base of her index finger.

Where a simple silver band sat nestled against her skin.

The pirate boss's eyes locked onto the movement.

"…Is that—?"

He stammered.

"I can't believe I didn't notice it until now…"

He muttered, his voice dropping even lower.

Lennie slowly pulled the silver ring off her finger.

It was etched with tiny, unreadable ancient markings, and a single, brilliant green gem rested at its exact centre.

Without a single moment of hesitation, she squeezed her hand shut and forcefully crushed the artifact into a fine metallic dust.

She casually brushed her palms together, letting the sparkling remnants scatter into the winter wind.

"Yes, you are exactly right…,"

"This is a suppression ring. My master gifted it to me."

The absolute second the words left her mouth.

A cataclysmic, suffocating aura violently emanated from her body.

The sheer weight of her released energy crashed over the square like a tidal wave, physically forcing the pirate to widen his eyes.

"I don't know what's actually going on here, but there's somewhere I need to be right now."

Lennie sneered, her presence completely dwarfing the man.

"Before anything happens further… just know I really tried to go on peacefully."

Both of released menacing blue and red aura.

"My apologies for underestimating you… that will not be happening soon."

"You better."

Lennie

"Are you not worried about your Mohawk fiend?"

"Huh? Friend? You heard that fool earlier didn't you? There's no such thing as a friend in this world."

"He got infected by the poison and died doing his job did he not? It as simple as that."

The man scoffed.

"Huh, so you will not be taking down your Barrier I suppose?"

The unexpected took the man by surprise.

"Barrier…?"

He looked up.

"it's still here…?"

The both of quickly locked eyes with one another.

"Wait… if you did not cast it then…"

"That… means?"

Both of them said in unison and looked at where Caster's body layed.

To both their surprise the body wasn't there anymore…

Lennie immediately noticed something.

"Watch out!"

It was too late.

-Bam!

The boss was caught completely off guard as a massive stone fist slammed directly into his side, sending him skidding across the dirt.

"Huh?!"

Lennie snarled, utterly puzzled.

"How!?!"

The massive construct had moved dynamically, scooping up Caster's bleeding and poisoned frame.

Caster did not explain.

But using the absolute last of his remaining strength.

He weakly raised his gloved hand, clutching a small, glowing crystal vial of dark purple liquid.

He violently yanked the cork lid off with his teeth and drank the contents, swallowing the thick fluid in tiny, desperate and careful sips.

Some of the contents sliding down his bare neck.

Slowly but surely, a horrific transformation began to take place.

His torn wound started to knit back together, although the recovery was far from perfect.

The potion he had drank was violently the poison he seems to still be in pain.

"That was close..."

Caster wheezed out, between breaths.

"Luckily… you're idiot… friend didn't aim… for a vital organ..."

He looked at the lifeless body of his executioner.

"Seems he didn't make it… I blame myself for not seeing such a obvious scheme."
