Chapter 18 - The Crimson Battlefield

Title: The Crimson Battlefield

---

PART I — Azrael Unleashes the Demon of War

A crimson aura erupted from Azrael.

It spread across the battlefield like a tidal wave.

The air became unbearably heavy.

Slayers struggled to breathe.

The ground beneath their feet cracked, and abandoned vehicles were pushed backward by the invisible pressure.

Even the demons behind Azrael instinctively retreated several steps.

Zenn narrowed his eyes.

> Zenn: "He's finally serious..."

Whyte tightened his grip on Soulcutter.

> Whyte: "Stay focused."

Don Frec increased the output of his gravity gauntlets.

> Don Frec: "He's affecting the battlefield itself."

Rath London's visor analyzed the energy.

Numbers streamed across his display.

> Rath: "Director, his aura isn't random."

Helena Voss immediately replied.

> Voss: "Explain."

> Rath: "It's synchronized with his heartbeat."

The Director paused.

> Voss: "Meaning?"

> Rath: "His strongest bursts happen a fraction of a second after every heartbeat."

Whyte smiled.

> Whyte: "That's enough."

PART II — A Mission Gone Wrong

Several kilometers away...

The evacuation operation continued.

Aiden, Adolf and Fushiguro escorted civilians through an abandoned industrial district.

The streets were eerily quiet.

Too quiet.

Fushiguro's drone suddenly beeped.

> Fushiguro: "Movement."

Another beep.

Then another.

> Fushiguro: "Multiple heat signatures."

Adolf raised his rifle.

> Adolf: "Demons?"

Before anyone could answer—

Small, agile figures dropped from rooftops.

Black-furred.

Steel claws.

Red eyes.

Monkey-like demons.

Amir's legion.

The civilians screamed.

> Aiden: "Everyone! Get behind the transport!"

The legion attacked.

---

PART III — Separated

During the confusion, an explosion collapsed part of the street.

Dust filled the air.

Aiden was thrown into a nearby warehouse.

When the dust settled...

He was alone.

Outside...

The sounds of fighting echoed.

Aiden searched desperately.

Instead of finding Adolf...

He found someone else.

Standing calmly in the center of the warehouse.

Amir.

The strategist smiled.

> Amir: "Interesting."

> "You're not a Slayer."

Aiden slowly reached for a discarded tactical sword lying beside a fallen Iron Veil soldier.

He picked it up.

Amir noticed.

> Amir: "You intend to fight?"

Aiden steadied his breathing.

> Aiden: "I'm not letting you hurt anyone."

Amir laughed softly.

> Amir: "Courage."

> "Sometimes courage is simply another word for ignorance."

He snapped his fingers.

Several monkey demons rushed forward.

---

PART IV — Aiden's First Real Battle

The first demon leaped.

Aiden fired instantly.

Bang!

The iron round pierced its forehead.

The creature collapsed before reaching him.

A second came from above.

Without looking directly at it, Aiden fired again.

Another clean shot.

Adolf had always joked about Aiden's aim.

Now it saved his life.

Three more demons charged together.

Aiden ducked beneath a slash.

He drew the tactical sword in one smooth motion.

The blade cut through the arm of the nearest demon.

He pivoted.

Another slash.

A second demon fell.

A third grabbed his shoulder.

Aiden drove the sword into its chest before kicking it away.

Breathing heavily, he backed toward a support column.

More monkey demons surrounded him.

Amir watched carefully.

Not impressed.

Interested.

> Amir: "Your shooting..."

He tilted his head.

> "...is unusually precise."

Aiden answered between breaths.

> Aiden: "I practice."

Amir smiled.

> Amir: "No."

> "Practice doesn't create instincts like yours."

The remaining monkey demons attacked together.

Aiden fired until his pistol clicked empty.

He threw it into one demon's face.

Rolled beneath another.

Recovered a fallen rifle.

Fired controlled bursts.

One.

Two.

Three.

More demons fell.

The warehouse floor became littered with bodies.

Amir slowly applauded.

> Amir: "Excellent."

> "You have potential."

---

PART V — The Strategist Withdraws

Amir finally stepped forward.

His steel claws extended.

The air seemed colder.

Aiden tightened his grip on the sword.

Every instinct screamed at him.

Run.

Instead...

He stood his ground.

The two stared at one another.

Then Amir smiled.

> Amir: "Another day."

> "If I kill you now..."

He looked toward the distant battlefield where Azrael continued fighting.

> "...I learn nothing."

He turned away.

The surviving monkey demons followed him.

Within seconds...

They disappeared into the rooftops.

Aiden remained standing.

Only after they were gone did his legs begin to shake.

PART VI — The End of the Main Battle

Back in Sector 12...

The battle had reached its climax.

Whyte and Azrael exchanged dozens of blinding strikes.

Soulcutter carved glowing arcs through the air.

Don Frec repeatedly increased localized gravity, slowing Azrael's movement for fractions of a second.

Rath's drones exploited every opening, coordinating missile strikes and Blue Rose dispersal with remarkable precision.

The combined pressure forced Azrael to take several steps backward.

The battlefield fell silent.

Azrael looked at the three Horsemen.

Then at the ruined city around them.

Finally...

He smiled.

> Azrael: "Very good."

He raised one hand.

> Azrael: "This battle has given me everything I needed."

Zenn immediately understood.

> Zenn: "Retreat."

The remaining demons disengaged.

Mara covered the withdrawal with petrifying attacks.

Vemmiz vanished in flashes of lightning.

Stag's deafening roar collapsed nearby bridges, slowing pursuit.

Within minutes...

The demon army had disappeared into the wastelands.

No one chased them.

The Slayers were exhausted.

Helena Voss looked across the devastated battlefield.

Hundreds were injured.

Several city blocks were destroyed.

But humanity still stood.

Whyte sheathed Soulcutter.

> Whyte: "He wasn't trying to win."

Don Frec frowned.

> Don Frec: "He was studying us."

Rath looked at the battlefield data scrolling across his visor.

> Rath: "And we were studying him."

Helena Voss nodded slowly.

> Voss: "The next battle..."

She looked toward the horizon where the demons had vanished.

> "...will decide the future of this war."
