The cavern air, still thick with the scent of ozone from Zapdos's discharge, groans as the ceiling cracks. Arnim Zola descends, his robotic frame moving with unsettling grace. He is flanked by Crossbones, a hulking figure clad in tactical armor, and Viper, a woman whose lithe form moves with serpentine fluidity. Their arrival shatters the quiet, a harbinger of the chaos to come.
Crossbones's boot crunches on loose scree as he lands, his skull-emblazoned mask a stark contrast to the cavern's rough-hewn walls. Viper, ever the picture of calculated elegance, touches a small, emerald-colored ring on her finger, her gaze sweeping the chamber. Zola, meanwhile, makes no sound as he alights, his metallic form perfectly balanced, his optical sensors already scanning the powerful Electric/Flying-type Pokémon.
Zola's voice, devoid of inflection, echoes through the space. "Richards children. How… predictable."
Valeria tenses. "Doctor Zola," she states, her voice tight. "You're trespassing."
"Indeed," Zola replies, his gaze fixed on Zapdos. "And we are here to acquire our prize. For optimization, of course."
Crossbones chuckles, a low rumble. "Optimization? Sounds like a fancy word for 'making it do what we want,' kid."
Viper ignores the taunt. Her eyes, sharp and analytical, trace Zapdos's fluctuating energy field. "Its power output is unstable," she murmurs, a detached observation that makes Valeria's stomach clench. This is no simple thug.
Under Zola's silent command, HYDRA agents fan out. Energy nets and stun rifles snap into position, locking onto Zapdos and the two children. Crossbones positions himself between Valeria and the cavern entrance.
"Going somewhere, Richards?" Crossbones sneers. "Wouldn't want you to miss the main event."
Franklin bristles, stepping protectively in front of Valeria. "You can't just take Zapdos!"
"Oh, we can," Crossbones replies, a cruel smile on his face. "And we will."
Valeria seizes the moment of distraction. "Metang! Engage the agents! Break their formation and shield Zapdos!"
Metang surges forward, its metallic claws blurring as it disrupts the HYDRA agents' positioning. Franklin, his frustration boiling over at HYDRA's callousness, urges Ralts forward. "Ralts, Confusion! And Disarming Voice!" Psychic energy bursts outward, disorienting several agents.
Viper, however, moves with unsettling grace. She subtly releases pheromones, a faint, sweet scent that wafts towards Metang and Ralts. Valeria watches, horrified, as her Pokémon waver, a flicker of discord and fear clouding their focus. Tactical openings appear for Crossbones's agents.
Zola activates a large, cylindrical containment unit. It unfurls with a hum, emitting a sickly purple glow that locks onto Zapdos. Valeria's eyes widen as the device visibly begins to siphon Zapdos's energy.
Zapdos roars, a sound of pure fury, and unleashes a desperate DISCHARGE across the cavern. Lightning arcs, incapacitating several HYDRA agents and frying some of their equipment. But Zola's device hums louder, its containment field strengthening around the struggling legendary bird.
Valeria and Franklin scramble for cover as the cavern shakes. Zapdos, its struggles weakening, is pulled into the containment unit. Seeing the majestic creature rendered helpless sends a surge of frustrated helplessness through Valeria.
The cavern air, thick with the stench of ozone and defeat, hums with a newfound tension. Zapdos's containment unit, a monstrous contraption of dark metal and pulsing purple light, ascends slowly through a newly-formed opening in the ceiling. Zola's robotic face, projected onto a screen embedded in the unit, displays a disturbingly smug satisfaction.
"Unexpected variables," Zola's synthesized voice rasps, a sound like grinding gears. "Excellent. The Richards children will provide… fascinating data."
Crossbones, his skull-marked armor glinting, grins as HYDRA agents converge on Valeria and Franklin. "Well, well," he rumbles, his voice laced with amusement. "More trouble than you were worth, but you'll make excellent specimens." His words send a shiver of ice down Valeria's spine.
Just as a HYDRA agent raises a net launcher towards Franklin, a sudden, chaotic greeting shatters the tense silence.
"Hey there, nerd squad!" Harley Quinn's voice rings out, followed by the distinct thwack of her mallet hitting something solid. She's already in motion, a whirlwind of red and black, with Houndour nipping at the heels of a HYDRA operative.
Poison Ivy emerges from the shadows, her eyes blazing with emerald fury. "You will not harm these creatures," she declares, her voice laced with an authority that makes the very air vibrate. Thick vines erupt from the cavern floor, snaking around the HYDRA agents.
Batgirl lands gracefully from a higher ledge, Frogadier perched on her shoulder. "Don't suppose you're here for the sightseeing tour, are you?" she quips, her escrima sticks crackling with energy. "Frogadier, Quick Attack! Create a diversion!"
Frogadier blurs, a streak of blue and white, zipping between the agents, knocking weapons from their hands and creating a whirlwind of confusion. Houndour, emboldened by Harley's presence, unleashes a burst of Ember, forcing a HYDRA agent to stumble back. Roselia, its roses glowing with renewed purpose, unleashes a volley of Magical Leaf attacks, forcing the agents to defend themselves.
Crossbones, his grin vanishing, barks an order. "Zola! Extract the asset! Now!" His priority is clear: Zapdos. The containment unit accelerates its ascent, its purple light intensifying.
"No!" Franklin cries, his hands glowing with cosmic energy, ready to unleash a blast.
Valeria grabs his arm. "Wait! Not yet! We need to stop them!"
But it's too late. The HYDRA agents, abandoning their pursuit of the children, focus on covering the extraction. Crossbones gives a final, contemptuous glance at Valeria and Franklin before disappearing into the chaos. Viper, ever the strategist, melts back into the shadows, leaving behind only a faint, floral scent and the lingering hum of damaged equipment.
The main HYDRA force retreats, their objective secured, leaving behind a few groaning agents and smoking machinery. Valeria stares up at the hole in the ceiling, the place where Zapdos vanished. She catches sight of the serpent insignia on Crossbones's uniform before he disappears. "It wasn't just about Zapdos," she murmurs, a cold realization dawning. This was a calculated move, a step in a larger, more sinister plan.
Franklin stares at the empty space where Zapdos had been, his hands still glowing faintly. "They can't get away with this," he says, his voice filled with a boyish indignation that belies the cosmic power simmering beneath. "We have to get Zapdos back."
Valeria nods, her gaze fixed on the jagged opening above. Her earlier arrogance has been replaced by a steely resolve. "You're right," she says, her voice low and firm. "This skirmish was merely the beginning. And we're going to finish it."
