Chapter 137 - Chapter 137 The Cost of Creation

The Grand Immortals stared at Nicholas. The silver light of the Array pulsed softly, casting long shadows across their ancient faces. Laozi's grey truth had dimmed to a faint glow. Yuanshi's black chaos had stilled. Even Tongtian, bound but watching, seemed to hold his breath.

"You claim you know how," Zhen Yuanzi said slowly." But mere understanding is not action. What you are describing—the creation of a new universe—is not a thing that can be done with mere theory."

Nicholas nodded. His threads pulsed with silver light, but his expression remained calm, almost contemplative.

"You are correct," he said. "Knowledge is not enough. I have spent decades studying the wall of our universe—its structure, its composition, its properties. I understand how it works. I understand the mechanism that allows it to absorb the exotic energy of the void and convert it into the faith and Qi that sustain us. But understanding is not the same as capability."

He began to pace again, his threads weaving patterns in the air.

"The material that makes up the Crystal Wall of reality is not something I am capable of creating. It is not a substance that can be conjured from nothing, not even by beings of our level. It is... primordial. Fundamental. It is the stuff that separates existence from non-existence, the boundary that defines what is real and what is not."

He paused, turning to face them.

"If we wanted to create a new universe—a sister reality to our own—we would need to get the raw material from somewhere."

The Grand Immortals exchanged glances. Nuwa's serpent tail coiled tighter. Houtu's expression darkened.

"You cannot mean—" Houtu began.

"I mean exactly what I say," Nicholas interrupted. "The only source of the Crystal Wall's material is the Crystal Wall itself. If we want to build a new universe, we must take from the old one. There is currently no other way."

The silence that followed was heavier than any before. The Grand Immortals understood the implication. They were beings who had ruled their domains for millennia, who had seen civilizations rise and fall, who had witnessed the shattering of continents and the reshaping of worlds. But this—this was different. This was the unmaking of reality itself.

"You are proposing," Laozi said slowly, "that we shatter the universe."

"I am proposing, that we do exactly that. I alone—with the combined authorities of myself and my four attendants—am capable of shattering the Crystal Wall and collecting the fragments. But there is a cost."

He let the words hang in the air.

"The moment the wall breaks, everyone inside this universe—every mortal, every cultivator, every immortal who has not achieved the True Spirit—will be directly exposed to the void. And their souls, for all their power, for all their cultivation, will be snuffed out like candles in the wind. The void does not discriminate. It consumes everything that is not protected by the wall or by a soul of sufficient density to withstand its pressure."

His grey eyes swept across the Grand Immortals.

"That is where you come in."

He raised his hand, and the silver light of the Array shifted, showing a visualization of his plan. The sphere of the universe, its Crystal Wall marked in shimmering silver. The Grand Immortals standing at its boundaries, their True Spirits blazing like black holes. And in the center, Nicholas and his attendants, their authorities combined, preparing to shatter the wall and gather the fragments.

"I cannot do this alone," Nicholas said. "Not because I lack the power, but because I lack the reach. While I am shattering the wall and collecting the fragments, I cannot also protect the inhabitants of this universe. My attention will be elsewhere. My authority will be focused on the destruction and reconstruction. The void will rush in, and everything that is not shielded will perish."

He turned to face them directly.

"You, Grand Immortals, have souls as dense as ours. Your True Spirits are black holes, capable of withstanding the pressure of the void. And more than that—you have the strength to shield others. To envelop them in your True Spirits, to create pockets of safety in the midst of annihilation."

He spread his arms.

"This is what I need from you. While I shatter the universe and collect the fragments, you will gather every living being—every mortal, every cultivator, every immortal who has not yet achieved the True Spirit—and you will protect them. You will use your soul strength to envelop them, to create a shield against the void. You will hold them safe for the few seconds it will take me to complete the work."

The Grand Immortals stared at him. The Array's silver light pulsed softly.

"You are asking us to trust you," Zhen Yuanzi said. "To place the fate of every soul in this universe in your hands while we focus on protecting them. If you fail—if your reconstruction fails—they will be exposed to the void. We will be exposed to the void. Everything will end."

Nicholas met his gaze.

"I am asking you to trust me," he agreed. "And I am asking you to help me. Because I cannot do this alone. Not because I lack the power, but because I lack the capacity for atrocity."

His voice dropped, becoming quieter, more intense.

"I am cold. I am calculating. But I am not capable of committing genocide on a universal scale. I will not be responsible for the extinction of every soul in existence. That is not who I am. That is not who I have ever been."

He looked at each of them in turn.

"So I am asking for your help. Not because I need your power—though I do. Not because I need your wisdom—though that would be welcome. But because I need your souls. Your True Spirits. Your ability to shield and protect while I destroy and rebuild."

He paused.

"The void is vast. The void is hungry. When the wall breaks, it will rush in like a tidal wave, consuming everything in its path. But it will not linger. It has no reason to linger. The void is not malevolent—it is simply... empty. It seeks to fill itself, but it does not discriminate between what it consumes. Once the wall is restored, once the new universe is formed, the void will recede. It will return to its waiting. And everything that was shielded will survive."

He spread his arms.

"This is my plan. This is my proposal. This is the only way I can see for us to build something new without destroying everything we have built before. I will shatter the universe. I will collect the fragments. I will rebuild the Crystal Wall into something that can support our two realities—two universes, each with its own boundaries, each with its own inhabitants, each unconnected to the others"

He looked at them, his grey eyes blazing.

"But I cannot do it alone. I need you, Grand Immortals. I need your souls. I need your strength. I need your willingness to protect the helpless while I do what must be done."

The silence stretched. The Grand Immortals looked at each other, their ancient faces unreadable. Laozi's grey light flickered. Yuanshi's black chaos swirled. Nuwa's rainbow radiance pulsed. Houtu's earthen authority ground against itself. The Two Grand Buddhas sat motionless, their mantras silent. Zhen Yuanzi's form was still as stone.

And Tongtian, bound but watching, laughed.

"Brothers," he said, his voice jagged with centuries of imprisonment, "the upstart asks us to trust him. To place the fate of every soul in our hands while he tears apart reality and builds it anew. He asks us to be his shield while he wields the sword."

He shook his head slowly.

"What do we have to lose? If he is lying, everything ends. If he is telling the truth, everything changes. Either way, the world we knew is already gone."

The Grand Immortals stared at him. Then, slowly, they turned back to Nicholas.

"Explain the details," Laozi said. "How long will the void be exposed? How much protection will be required? How will we coordinate across the vastness of existence?"

Nicholas smiled.

"Finally," he said, "we are talking."

To be continued...
