"The worst scars are the ones that refuse to fade not because they haunt us but because they remind us that we survived."
---
The dawn over Gotham was softer than usual — fog resting over the rooftops like breath held in quiet prayer.
For the first time in years, Soren woke without fear.
He looked at his hands.
The nails were still black — charred to a sheen that no light could pierce.
Marks left by sorcerey's Darga's corruption.
Marks that no healing, no divinity, no act of will could erase.
He once called them his "chains."
Now, King called them "proof."
"Every artist," King had said, "starts with a canvas already scarred by fire."
And so, when King suggested a visit — "There's someone you should meet" — Soren didn't protest.
The House of Secrets
They traveled through mist, stepping out of nowhere into a garden that smelled of lavender, ink, and candle wax.
Before them stood a grand manor — Gothic, yet alive, the air around it humming softly with arcane energy.
"Is this…?" Soren began.
King nodded. "The House of Zatara."
The door opened before they could knock.
A man with dark eyes and a neat mustache appeared, dressed in a midnight blue suit with a white rose in the lapel. Giovanni Zatara. Behind him peeked a young girl with starlit blue eyes and a magician's grin — Zatanna, her hair a cascade of raven silk, her age not yet touching fifteen.
Zatara's gaze fell immediately to Soren's hands — to the blackened nails that whispered of darker histories. For a heartbeat, Soren wanted to hide them.
"Ah," Zatara said finally, his tone unreadable. "The boy who survived Den Darga."
Soren lowered his eyes. "Barely."
Zatanna's curiosity sparkled. "Wait — the Soren? The one who fought that thing in the Arctic Rift?"
King said simply, "He fought and he chose to live."
Zatara studied the boy, silent for a long moment. Then, with a nod, he stepped aside. "Then you are welcome in my home."
The Lesson of Still Hands
Hours later, Soren found himself sitting in Zatara's study, surrounded by ancient grimoires and candles that floated midair.
The sorcerer's voice was calm, almost surgical in precision.
"Magic," Zatara began, "is not about destruction. It is the shaping of will. You've been taught to unmake, to unravel — to end. Let's teach you to build instead."
Soren hesitated. "But my hands—"
"—are hands." Zatara interrupted. "What they have done does not decide what they will create."
He placed a crystal prism on the table.
"Try," He said softly. "But think not of power. Think of beauty."
Soren took a breath. Shadows flickered at his fingertips, reluctant, trembling.
He whispered the word Zatara had taught him — the ancient tongue of reversal, the magic of creation.
And slowly, impossibly — the prism bloomed with light.
From its heart rose a miniature sculpture of dancing flame and water, merging, spiraling, balancing.
Zatara smiled — the faintest, proudest smile.
"You see? Even darkness, when guided, remembers how to shine."
The Garden Spell
Later that evening, Zatanna found Soren outside, sitting cross-legged on the grass. Around him floated dozens of tiny lights — motes of fire shaped into butterflies, gliding gently through the twilight.
"Wow," She whispered. "You made those?"
Soren nodded shyly. "Zatara said to create beauty. I didn't know where to start, so I… remembered things. People who smiled at me. Maya, Nika, Damian, King…"
Zatanna grinned. "You're good. You could make real art with that."
"I used to make craters," Soren said softly. "Now I just want to make light."
The words hung there, delicate as the butterflies that shimmered above them.
Zatanna plucked one out of the air and held it to her chest.
"It suits you," She said. "The boy with black nails who paints with fire."
He looked away, embarrassed. "It's not much."
She smiled. "It's enough."
King's Observation
From the veranda, King watched silently beside Zatara.
"You gave him purpose." Zatara said.
"No," King replied. "You gave him direction. Purpose was already there — buried under guilt."
Zatara folded his arms. "He fears what he might become again."
"Good," said King. "Fear is the spine of conscience. Let him fear but never hate himself."
They stood in silence as the children laughed in the garden.
For the first time, Soren's hands looked like hands again — not weapons, not curses but instruments of wonder.
Zatara glanced at King. "You're building something, aren't you?"
King's eyes, faintly glowing in the dusk, didn't turn.
"Something that will technically outlast me. A generation that doesn't need me."
