The Rift Cage with exits inside the null field was degraded — the compromised exits reducing the cage's effectiveness. He needed exits outside the field. But exits outside the field required the cage's geometry to put Bovac's movement through rifts that sent him to positions outside the null field's radius — and Bovac was inside the radius, the field moving with him wherever he went.
The cage's exits needed to be far enough from Bovac's position that the null field's radius didn't reach them.
