The downpour of July 8, 1300, rattles the high leaded glass panes of the Thromium manor like a volley of iron arrows. It is late, deep into the night, and the darkness outside is absolute, thick, and heavy over the hills of northern Heilop. Inside the private study, the only illumination comes from the dying, amber embers of a stone fireplace, casting long, dancing shadows across the polished oak floorboards.
Duke Ferris stands motionless before the wide bay window, his reflection suspended against the rain-streaked blackness outside. He is well over forty years old, tall, with broad, well-built shoulders that carry the weight of his lineage effortlessly. His face, sharply defined and strikingly handsome, shows no signs of sagging under the years; the silver threading through his dark hair at the temples only sharpens the icy authority in his pale blue eyes.
A floorboard creaks softly behind him. The old head butler slips into the room from the velvet curtains, his back curved in a practiced, deeply respectful bow that stops precisely three paces away from his master.
"The final candles have been extinguished in the west wing, Your Grace," the butler murmurs, his voice low and dry, like old parchment rubbing together. "The evening gala has officially concluded. The remaining guests have retired to their designated bedchambers for the night."
Duke Ferris does not turn around right away. He keeps his long fingers clasped behind his back, his gaze lingering on the cold sheets of water crashing against the glass before he tilts his chin slightly in acknowledgment.
"My gratitude, Elric," Ferris answers, his voice a rich, resonant baritone that vibrates with absolute, effortless control. "And what of our visitors from the royal encampment? Have the officers settled into the guest quarters?"
The butler keeps his head lowered, his white-gloved hands folded neatly over his waistcoat.
"Are you referring to the high-ranking leadership of the Professional Standing Army, Your Grace? The central military delegation—the PCA?"
Duke Ferris lets out a brief, dry huff from his nose, his lips curling into a faint, dismissive smile as he watches a droplet of water trace a jagged line down the exterior pane.
"I have little interest in the convoluted nomenclature of the High Council's administrative branches, Elric," Ferris states smoothly, his tone cool and indifferent. "To me, they are simply the Royal Army, regardless of the acronyms they choose to append to their regiments. The officers, the conscripted slave-soldiers—have they been properly accounted for?"
"They have, Your Grace," the butler replies instantly. "The tactical staff have locked their quarters, and the frontline slave-soldiers have returned to the lower barracks outside the courtyard. They are resting under heavy guard."
Ferris remains utterly pensive, his sharp eyes narrowing as a sudden flash of lightning across the distant river basin illuminates the tight, flawless lines of his jaw. The pale light reflects off the silver rings on his fingers.
"And what of those four lower-ranked young slaves?" Ferris asks, his voice dropping into a quieter, more calculated register. "The ones who arrived with the vanguard. The reports indicate they have been departing from the main estate grounds with high frequency during the daylight hours."
"Indeed, Your Grace," the butler shifts his weight slightly, his face remaining an impenetrable mask. "They have been under intermittent surveillance. Realizing their absence after the evening service began, I took the necessary precautions. I contacted the maid, Gertrude, and called her back from the lower hills immediately to provide an explanation."
Ferris finally turns away from the window. He moves with a slow, predatory grace, his tall frame cutting through the dim firelight as he walks toward the heavy mahogany desk at the center of the room. He does not sit down; instead, he rests his palms flat against the leather blotter, his gaze fixing on the door.
"Excellent," Ferris says softly. "Gertrude, you may come in now to report your findings."
The heavy oak door swings open with a low, groaning sigh. Gertrude Koch steps over the threshold. Her head is bowed low, her damp chestnut bangs deliberately plastered sweatily across her brow to completely cover the smooth skin where her magically binding slave mark used to be. Her fingers twitch slightly against the coarse fabric of her wet linen apron, her hands red and raw from the kitchen lye. Her small leather shoes leave two dark, muddy pools upon the expensive Persian rug with every step she takes toward the desk.
"Speak," Ferris commands, his eyes tracking the movement of her shoulders.
Gertrude clears her throat. When she speaks, her voice is flat, carefully measured to mimic the hollow, uneducated obedience of a local serf, entirely hiding the sharp, studious cadence of her Earthling past.
"I observed them closely when they departed through the eastern gates, Your Grace," Gertrude reports, her dark eyes staring fixedly at the floorboards near Ferris's polished boots. "They spent the entire afternoon wandering aimlessly around the limestone hills directly beside the riverbanks. The large one... Comtois... he possesses the intellect of a common beast of burden. He spent several hours picking wild thistles and chasing the blue mountain butterflies through the high clover like a simpleton."
Ferris lets out a low, rumbling chuckle that does not reach his cold eyes, his broad chest expanding beneath his velvet tunic. He leans back against the desk, crossing his arms.
"Perhaps the boy simply possesses an affinity for the natural landscape of northern Heilop," Ferris comments, his voice dripping with an aristocratic, patronizing amusement. "And rightly so, I suppose. The southern territories offer little variety—nothing but dense, suffocating pine forests or vast, empty meadows that go on for miles. The north has a certain rough beauty that appeals to the uneducated mind. And what of the other one? The quiet youth... Aldo?"
Gertrude shifts her stance slightly, her rough, chafed fingers clenching into tight balls within the folds of her apron as she remembers the heavy silver coins and the cold, dead-fish eyes of the calculator.
"He did not participate in the gathering of flora, Your Grace," Gertrude answers carefully, feeding the Duke exactly what he wants to hear. "His attention was directed entirely toward the stone pilings and the cargo berths at our deepwater docks. He stood near the western pier for over an hour, watching the merchant barges unload their iron ore."
Ferris raises a manicured eyebrow, a self-satisfied smirk touching his handsome features. He looks toward the dark window, his posture expanding with deep, systemic arrogance.
"Well," Ferris murmurs, his tone rich with condensation. "The infrastructure of the Thromium docks is designed to crush the ego. The sheer scale of our prosperity is often too much for common conscripts to fully comprehend. He wasn't plotting—he was paralyzed by it. They see the wealth of my duchy and their minds simply short-circuit."
The Duke slowly walks around the mahogany desk, his boots making no sound on the rug as he approaches Gertrude. He stops two feet away, his tall, imposing build towering over her small frame as he looks her up and down with a slow, critical eye. He notes the dark streaks of wet soil clinging to her gray skirt, the green moss smudging her collar, and the water dripping from her hair. Thanks to her plastered bangs, her forehead remains safely hidden in shadow.
"Look at you," Ferris says, his voice dropping into a low, purring tone that causes Gertrude's jaw to tighten in silence. "You are incredibly dirty, girl. It seems you have been through quite a lot of misery out in those wet hills today. You should wash up immediately; a servant of this house must not appear before the household looking like a common field laborer. However... you did very well with your surveillance today. Your diligence will be rewarded. I will allow you to use the lower washhouse to cleanse yourself as you please tonight."
Gertrude lowers her head even further, her teeth grinding together in the darkness of her own shadow.
"Thank you, Your Grace," she whispers.
"Go now," Ferris turns his back to her, waving a dismissive, elegant hand toward the doorway. "And as you pass through the servant gallery, tell my dear Nora to come in."
Gertrude offers a stiff, silent bow. She turns on her heel and glides out of the study, her muddy tracks trailing behind her like a line of dark blood on the pristine floor.
Within a minute, the door creaks open once more. Nora Axford slips into the room like a ghost made of pale moonlight and silk. Her small, incredibly delicate body seems almost weightless as she crosses the floor, her golden hair falling in soft, perfect waves down her back. When she lifts her head, the dying firelight catches the striking asymmetry of her gaze—her left eye a deep, crystalline purple, her right eye a burning, vibrant red. Both eyes are wide, glassy with a deep, structural terror that she cannot fully conceal.
Duke Ferris turns to face her, his handsome face softening into an expression of intense, possessive desire. He holds out his long, strong arms.
Nora does not hesitate, though her lower lip trembles violently. She steps forward and sinks onto Ferris's lap as he seats himself in the large leather chair, her small frame looking completely minuscule against his sturdy, muscular build. Ferris's thick, powerful arms immediately wrap around her slender waist, his smooth hands clamping down onto her hips with a heavy, unyielding dominance that locks her against his chest.
Nora's hands shoot up automatically, her smooth palms resting flat against the fine velvet of Ferris's chest. Her fingers press hard against the fabric, not to embrace him, but holding a stiff, desperate rigidity as if trying to maintain a fraction of an inch of space between her torso and his unyielding frame.
Ferris leans his head down, his sharp nose brushing against the soft gold strands of her hair as he presses his lips directly against the shell of her ear. His hot breath rustles her hair, his whisper a low, heavy purr that fills the quiet room.
"Let's do it again today, my sweet girl," he murmurs, his fingers tightening against her skin.
