Chapter 6 - MORNING AFTER THE STORM

First pale streaks of dawn were just beginning to filter through the heavy gray clouds over Tokyo when Ryouji stepped back over the wooden fence of his property. The air was biting cold, damp with the early morning dew that clung to the leaves of Hana's hydrangeas. He moved across the grass with the practiced weightlessness of a shadow, slipping through the kitchen extension window and locking it behind him without a single click. Every muscle in his upper back was tight, vibrating from the adrenaline of the Roppongi extraction, but his hands remained perfectly steady as he stripped off the high-density polymer tactical gear and hid it back beneath the loose floorboards of his study. He changed back into his worn, comfortable lounge pants and a soft gray sweatshirt. He looked at his reflection in the small vanity mirror on the wall. The hard, predatory lines of Kage had to be erased once more. He massaged his face, forcing the tension out of his jaw until the submissive, gentle warmth of Ryouji Hyūga settled back into his eyes. He checked his watch. It was exactly five minutes before six in the morning. He had returned with less than thirty-eight hours left on the Zero-Unit's liquidation timer.Ryouji walked into the kitchen, his movements shifting from tactical precision to the familiar, domestic rhythm of a homemaker. He filled the kettle with tap water, placed it on the stove, and began washing the rice for breakfast. The steady, repetitive sound of grains swirling in the ceramic bowl was usually enough to ground him, to make him believe that the quiet life was real. But today, the rhythmic sloshing of the water only reminded him of the digital countdown ticking away inside his pocket. The stolen administrative access keys from Director Ishii were now safely uploaded into his offline laptop, but Ryouji knew the clock was working against him. The moment Ishii's security team discovered the unconscious politician and the bodies of the two guards in Roppongi, the National Security Bureau would initiate a city-wide blackout protocol on all local data streams. He had a narrow window of time to utilize those cryptographic clearance codes before the Amatsu Corporation altered the network architecture."You are up early, Ryouji-kun," a soft, sleepy voice murmured from the doorway.Ryouji turned around, a warm, instant smile appearing on his face as Hana walked into the kitchen. She was wrapping a thick woolen shawl tightly around her shoulders, her hair tumbling down in a messy, beautiful wave. She looked adorable, blinking against the soft morning light, completely untouched by the violence that had transpired just miles away while she slept."I couldn't sleep much," Ryouji said smoothly, stepping forward to press a gentle kiss onto her temple. He reached out, his hand instinctively checking her pulse at her wrist under the guise of a warm touch. Her heartbeat was calm, steady, and innocent. "The spring air felt a bit restless today. I thought I would get a head start on the bento boxes for the kids."Hana leaned into his chest for a brief second, letting out a soft sigh of contentment. "You work too hard. You should have woken me up. I finished the online knitting order late last night, so I could have handled breakfast today.""You need your rest," he replied, gently steering her toward the dining table where a warm cup of green tea was already waiting. "Sit down. The miso soup is almost finished. I found some fresh scallions yesterday that will make the broth perfect."Hana sat down, wrapping her hands around the warm ceramic mug, her eyes following his movements with a quiet, observant intensity. "Ryouji-kun, did something happen yesterday at the supermarket? You seem a bit distant. More quiet than usual."Ryouji's fingers tightened imperceptibly around the handle of the kitchen knife, but his face remained a mask of pure serenity. "Nothing out of the ordinary. Just thinking about the upcoming parent-teacher conferences for Ren. His homeroom teacher mentioned he has been distracted during math lectures lately. I want to make sure he isn't falling behind.""He is just reaching that age where everything seems more interesting than schoolwork," Hana said with a gentle laugh, her suspicion completely defused by his fatherly concern. "Don't worry too much. He takes after you. He might look like he isn't paying attention, but he notices everything."The door to the hallway slid open with a loud clatter, and Sakura came running in, her pajamas inside out and her favorite stuffed rabbit clutched tightly under her arm. "Papa! The television is making a funny buzzing noise and my cartoons won't start!"Ryouji knelt down, picking up his daughter and adjusting her messy hair. "The television is buzzing? Let Papa take a look after breakfast, okay? It is probably just the morning news broadcast resetting the local cable signal."Ren entered a moment later, his face buried in his smartphone, his brow furrowed in deep frustration. "It isn't just the TV, Papa. The local cellular network is completely down for our district block. I can't even load the school transit app to check the train schedule. Everyone on the group chat is saying the reception died around four in the morning."Ryouji's chest grew cold. The blackout protocol had already begun. The Amatsu Corporation was tightening the digital net around the eastern district, isolating the cellular towers to prevent any unauthorized data transmission. They were looking for the signal anomaly that his hardware duplicator had created when he accessed Ishii's tablet. They didn't know exactly where he was yet, but they had narrowed the search grid to this square mile of suburban Tokyo."It is probably just routine maintenance on the fiber-optic lines," Ryouji said, his voice a perfect anchor of calm amidst his children's annoyance. "Eat your breakfast first. Ren, I will walk you to the station today to ensure you don't miss the local commuter train if the digital schedule is running late.""I can walk by myself, Papa," Ren groaned, his teenage pride instantly flaring up. "None of the other guys in my class have their dads walking them to the platform. It looks weird.""Your father is just being careful, Ren," Hana said, her tone firmer now as she placed the bowls of rice on the table. "With the network down, the crossing signals near the main intersection might be malfunctioning. Let him walk with you."The breakfast passed in a blur of forced normalcy. Ryouji ate his food mechanicaly, his ears tuned to the external environment, listening for the distinct hum of unmarked surveillance vans or the heavy stride of operatives patrolling the residential asphalt. The contrast between the warmth of his family's laughter and the impending violence waiting outside the door was becoming toxic, a heavy pressure that sat squarely on his lungs.By seven in the morning, Ryouji was standing at the front genkan, checking Ren's uniform and ensuring Sakura's backpack was securely buckled. He looked at Hana, who was standing by the door frame, her eyes filled with that constant, unwavering love that both sustained him and broke his heart."Be safe out there, Ryouji-kun," she said softly, reaching out to straighten his jacket collar. "The neighborhood feels a bit strange today. There were two men in dark suits standing near the public park when I looked out the window earlier. They didn't look like locals."Ryouji's gaze remained steady, though his internal calculations instantly shifted into high alert. The outer perimeter was gone. The enemy was already on his street. "They are probably just surveyors for the new municipal digital integration project, Hana. Don't worry about them. Keep the front door locked while I am gone, okay? The wind is supposed to pick up later today.""I will," she promised, smiling warmly.Ryouji stepped out into the crisp morning air, his hand gently resting on Ren's shoulder as they walked down the paved pathway. Sakura was walking on his left, her small hand tightly gripping his fingers, her steps light and carefree. To anyone looking from a distance, they were the definition of a perfect, happy family. But Ryouji's eyes were scanning the rooftops, the gaps between the houses, and the dark sedan parked sixty meters down the road.As they passed the local community park, Ryouji spotted the two men Hana had mentioned. They were standing near the public restroom structure, pretending to read a construction blueprint. They wore standard dark blue corporate windbreakers with the subtle, silver logo of the Amatsu Security Division embroidered on the collar. Their eyes were hidden behind dark sunglasses, but Ryouji could feel their gaze locking onto his face, their hands moving toward their pockets where their tactical radios were concealed. The predictive AI system, Project Izanami, was cross-referencing his current gait and physical dimensions with the data gathered from the Akihabara altercation. The system was confirming his identity in real-time.Ryouji did not alter his pace. He did not look directly at the security operatives. He kept his arm around Ren's shoulder, laughing gently at a joke Sakura made about her stuffed rabbit, maintaining the flawless illusion of a submissive civilian father. He needed to get his children to the safety of their respective schools before the street turned into a free-fire zone. He had less than thirty-six hours left, and the first chess pieces of the Amatsu Corporation were already moving into position to checkmate his life.
