Chapter 44 - CHAPTER 43

"Never forget, Teni, that no matter how gifted you are, there will always be someone better out there …"

*September 19th 2068*

The vibrant energy of a new day filled the bustling classroom as students eagerly anticipated the arrival of their class teacher, Mrs. Olukoya. The morning sun, casting a warm glow through the windows, seemed to fuel the chatter and laughter echoing off the walls

Engrossed in a lively debate over the previous year's high school basketball tournaments, Tosin's voice rose above the din, her passion for the sport evident in her spirited challenge to her teammates to step up their games this year. Nearby, Oluchi sought solace in the pages of her journal, her pen dancing across the paper as she immersed herself in her thoughts

In the back of the classroom, a spirited argument ensued among a group of boys, their voices ringing out as they discussed the contentious outcome of a recent award event. Through the chaos, Tolu sat quietly, deep in contemplation of her personal growth since the Queens' bitter defeat at the hands of Wyse

As if summoned by the crescendo of anticipation, Mrs. Olukoya entered the classroom, her presence instantly commanding the attention of the students. A warm smile played on her lips as she surveyed the sea of eager faces, clearing her throat to address the class

"Good morning, everyone," Mrs. Olukoya greeted

The students' voices filled the air in a harmonious chorus as they greeted their teacher. "Good morning, ma"

A warm smile graced Mrs. Olukoya's face as she addressed the class. "How were your breaks, everyone?"

An array of responses ensued, with each student offering their candid thoughts on the long break. Some found it invigorating, while others deemed it a bore, yet all were united in their eagerness to return to school

With a knowing nod, Mrs. Olukoya acknowledged their varying experiences. "Well, boring or not, it's wonderful to have you all back. It's time to refocus and dive into our studies once more

Before continuing, Mrs. Olukoya paused to introduce a new addition to their classroom family. "Before we move on, I'd like to welcome a new student who will be joining us today. Please come in!"

All eyes turned towards the door as a young girl entered, her frown a stark contrast to the lively atmosphere of the room. She hesitated briefly before making her way towards the front, her backpack slung over her shoulder

"Class, I'd like you to meet Teni Afolabi," Mrs. Olukoya announced, gesturing towards the new arrival. "She has transferred to our school from Glorious Foundation High School. Starting today, she'll be joining us on our educational journey. I trust that you will all be kind and welcoming to her."

"Yes, ma'am," the students responded in unison, eager to embrace their new classmate

Mrs. Olukoya then directed Teni to her assigned seat, next to Tosin. With quiet steps, Teni made her way to the desk, sliding into the chair with a reserved air

As the introduction came to a close, Mrs. Olukoya took a moment to impart some wisdom upon her students. "Welcome back to school once again, and welcome to SSS 2. At this point in your academics, many of you have likely begun to contemplate your post-secondary paths. If you haven't, remember that time waits for no one. Now is the moment to begin preparing for your WACE and JAMB examinations"

With those final words of guidance, Mrs. Olukoya wished her students the best of luck before departing the classroom, leaving behind a group of young minds eager to forge their own paths in the world

"Hey, you're Teni, right?" Tosin greeted with a warm smile, attempting to break the ice. "I'm Tosin, and it's nice to meet you."

However, Tosin's friendly gesture was met with cold silence as Tolu rudely ignored her

Undeterred by Teni's aloof demeanor, Tosin offered to give her a tour of the school during their lunch break. "Teni, how about I show you around?" she suggested, hoping to make a connection with the new student.

Once again, Teni brushed her off with a dismissive silence, walking away without a second glance. Tolu intervened, advising Tosin to give Teni some space

As the students returned to their classes, Teni stepped on Tosin's leg, but pretended it was an accident. Tosin called her out on it, asking for an apology, but Teni ignored her once more. Tosin couldn't help but feel irritated by Teni's continued disregard. As fate would have it, an accident was about to test both of their limits. Tosin went to the restroom. Upon returning to the classroom, Tosin inadvertently stepped on Teni's foot causing the girl to snap

"Hey, Teni, I'm sor-" Tosin tried to apologize

But before she could finish her apology, Teni slapped her. The resounding slap caught everyone's attention, and a stunned silence descended upon the classroom.

"Are you blind?" Teni yelled; her anger palpable

Taken aback by the sudden aggression, Tosin's eyes flashed with anger "Teni, I've been trying to be nice, but it's clear that you like being treated like a thug"

Teni's rage intensified, and it seemed as though a full-blown fight was imminent. Luckily, their classmates intervened, separating the two before any real arm could be done. The incident was then reported by the class rep to Mrs. Olukoya who then summoned the two girls to the staffroom

"You know, you both could be suspended for such ugly behaviour," Mrs. Olukoya warned, disappointment etched on her face

"But ma, Teni started it," Tosin protested, feeling the weight of her teacher's disapproval

"Tosin, I wasn't expecting you of all people to be involved in something like this. I must say that I'm disappointed," Mrs. Olukoya chided

Hanging her head in shame, Tosin apologized, "I'm sorry, ma"

Mrs. Olukoya turned her attention to Teni, hoping to get through to the troubled student. "Teni, are you happy to start at Charlie Queens Academy with a fight?"

Teni shrugged; her cold indifference unwavering. "What does it matter? Everybody fights at one point in their life. That includes you too, right, teacher?"

Mrs. Olukoya was momentarily taken aback by Teni's blunt statement, recognizing a kernel of truth within her words. Before she could respond, Teni walked away, her apathy lingering in the air. Tosin, feeling the tension dissipate, followed after her hoping to find some common ground with the new student

As the students left the staffroom, Mrs. Olukoya and Mrs. Lawal spoke about their students as they discuss the situation

"Well, as much as I don't agree with Teni's actions, what she said is not just true but it also makes sense. Plus, she didn't even point accusing fingers. This shows that she is taking responsibilities for her actions. She's pretty matured, wouldn't you agree?" Mrs. Lawal observed

"Fighting is dangerous," Mrs. Olukoya insisted. "They could get hurt, and someone around them could get hurt, too"

Mrs. Lawal nodded in agreement, but there was something else that weighed on her mind. "Yes, that's true, but I can see a deep sadness in her eyes, as if she has given up on something"

The school alarm sounded, signaling the end of the day. Students began to file out of the buildings, eager to head home. The Queens, however made their way to the gym for their regular training session. As they walked, they discussed the fight between Tosin and Teni.

"I heard Tosin fought today," Chioma said

"Yes, she did." Tolu confirmed

"With who?" Kevwe asked

Mercy filled them in, "A new student. Her name is Teni. She transferred from Glorious Foundation High School"

Tosin chimed in, her voice bitter. "She's just annoying. She needs to be dealt with"

As they approached the gym, the familiar sound of a bouncing basketball echoed through corridor, hinting at someone already inside

"Hey, who could be playing basketball in the gym?" Tosin asked, her curiosity piqued

"Eno, I guess," Chioma ventured a guess

"Only one way to find out," Mercy said with a shrug

The queens rushed to the gym. As they stepped into the gym, their jaws dropped in shock as they came face to face with an unexpected sight.

"You again?" Tosin questioned, her eyes filled with a mix of frustration and bewilderment. "What are you doing here, Teni?"

"Huh? Teni? That's her?" Chioma asked

"That's right," Tolu confirmed, her gaze fixed on Teni. "She's the new student Tosin fought today."

Unfazed by the attention, Teni continued shooting the ball without so much as acknowledging the presence of the Queens. Her effortless shot found their mark with unwavering accuracy, each one punctuated by the satisfying swish of the net

Eno, arriving at the gym ahead of the team's training session, was quick to question the scene unfolding before her. "What's going on here?"

"It is exactly what it looks like," Mercy replied. "A new student is shooting the ball at the hoop, acting as if we are not even here."

"She has to excuse us right now," Tosin declared, "We have to train"

Shalom, ever the peacemaker, stepped in to advise caution, "Tosin, you don't want to disturb her."

"And why is that?" Tosin challenged, her impatience growing

"Well… you know… for peace to reign," Shalom said, with a shrug

"Besides, haven't you guys noticed?" Mercy chimed in; her observant eyes locked on Teni's flawless performance. "She's been shooting from behind the arc since we got here, and she's made every shot. We've been here for about five minutes,"

The realization hit Oluchi with a jolt of surprise. "You have a point. How can she be so good at shooting?" Her brow furrowed as a new thought emerged. "If she's here, does that mean she's a new member of the team?"

Kevwe, intrigued by the possibility, was quick to express her support. "If that's the case, it'd be good for the team"

Tosin, however, was not convinced. "Sorry, but I don't think that's good."

"Why is that?" Tolu asked, eager to understand Tosin's reservations

"She's got skills, but that isn't enough," Tosin explained, her eyes fixed on Teni's solitary figure. "You see, if we don't work together, we can never win the Christmas Champions Cup. And Miss. Attitude here doesn't seem to be interested in teamwork. Talent isn't enough!"

Tolu considered Tosin's words, recognizing the wisdom in her statement. "Tosin is right," she agreed, her gaze shifting between Tosin and the enigmatic new student

Determined to make Teni stop, Tosin dashed towards Teni, who remained focused, bouncing the ball rhythmically against the wooden floor

"Tosin, what are you doing?!" Eno called out, alarmed by Tosin's sudden actions

Ignoring her teammates, Tosin attempted to tap the ball from Teni's hands. With a graceful and seemingly effortless motion, Teni evaded attack, bouncing the ball behind her from her right hand to her left. The unexpected maneuver sent Tosin stumbling, the Queens watching in stunned silence as Teni effortlessly unleashed another shot, the ball sinking into the net with a resounding swish

Teni turned to Tosin, a mockery grin spreading across her face. "What you said earlier about teamwork… I'm sorry, but friendship isn't teamwork"

A sudden sound of applause echoed throughout the quiet gymnasium, drawing the Queens' attention to the spectators' seats, where a familiar figure sat

"Coach!" they exclaimed; their voice tinged with surprise at the sight of Mrs. Lawal

Mercy, quick to question Mrs. Lawal's unannounced presence, spoke up. "You were here all this time and didn't say anything?"

"Well, yes," Mrs. Lawal confessed, approached her team with a thoughtful expression. "I've been here from the start"

Oluchi chimed in, her tone conveying a hint of frustration. "You should have said something"

Mrs. Lawal, remained focused on the heart of the matter at hand. "I wanted to see how Tosin would handle this situation, and I must say, I'm disappointed by her words. That's not something a Captain should say about a new member of the team."

The meaning behind Mrs. Lawal's statement began to dawn on Mercy, her eyes widening as she sought confirmation. "Wait, you mean…"

With a resolute nod, Mrs. Lawal confirmed their suspicions. "Starting today, Teni is an official member of the Charlie Queens Academy Female Basketball Club"

Stunned silence enveloped the Queens as the gravity of the announcement set in. Tosin, her gaze shifting between Teni and Mrs. Lawal, took a deep breath before stepping forward. "I'm sorry, Coach," She apologized, genuine remorse etched on her face

Mrs. Lawal, her expression softening, offered a gentle correction. "Captain, I believe you owe Teni an apology, not me"

Nodding in understanding, Tosin turned to face her new teammate, her voice sincere as she spoke. "I'm sorry, Teni. I don't know what came over me. It won't happen again"

Teni, a mischievous glint in her eyes, grinned playfully at Tosin. "What? I can't hear you. Louder." she teased, her tone lighthearted, yet challenging

Tosin, her frustration mounting, raised her voice, her apology echoing through the gymnasium. "I'm sorry!"

Unsatisfied, Teni pressed on, her grin widening. "I still can't hear you. What did you say?"

Tosin, her patience wearing thin, took a deep breath before screaming her apology at the top of her lungs. "I'M SORRY!"

The gymnasium fell silent, the echoes of Tosin's shout reverberating off the walls as Teni finally relented. "That's much better," she said with a triumphant smile, as the rest of the team erupted into a resounding laughter
