Shen Zheng'an sat to the side, writing his wish on the paper: May all your wishes come true.
As he picked up the pen, he unexpectedly wrote these words, though at first he intended to write that he wanted to spend a lifetime with her.
He glanced across, not knowing what wish she had made.
Ah Chen rolled up her paper, sensing Shen Zheng'an's attention and asked, "What wish did you make?"
"They say if you speak it out loud, it won't come true," he said, quickly rolling up his paper.
Ah Chen nodded and slipped her paper into the river lantern: "True."
She noticed Shen Zheng'an staring at her river lantern for a long time, not sure what he was looking at.
The lantern viewing ended, and Ah Chen got into the carriage.
Shen Zheng'an watched her leave and then softly asked those around him, "Have you been keeping an eye on that river lantern? When it goes out, retrieve it."
After all, the lanterns would be ruined anyway. Bringing it back to take a look wouldn't hurt.
