Chapter 7 - The Pull From the Page

The world didn't snap.

It didn't break.

It just… shifted.

One second I was in the alley.

The next—

Everything felt wrong.

Not dark.

Not bright.

Just… off.

I stopped moving immediately.

My body already tense.

Waiting.

Listening.

Nothing.

No cars.

No voices.

No city.

Just silence.

"…Yeah," I muttered. "That's not normal."

I turned slightly.

The alley was still there.

Same walls.

Same ground.

But it looked… faded.

Like I was looking at it through something else.

A layer over reality.

Or maybe—

Under it.

My hand lifted slowly.

I touched the wall beside me.

It felt real.

Solid.

But there was a faint ripple where my fingers pressed.

Like the surface didn't fully belong here.

"…What is this?"

No answer.

No voice this time.

Just that same quiet.

But the feeling from before?

It was stronger.

Much stronger.

Pulling.

Clear direction now.

Forward.

Deeper into the alley.

I hesitated for half a second.

Then shook my head.

"Already here."

No point backing out now.

I stepped forward.

The moment I did—

The world shifted again.

This time, I felt it.

Like stepping through something thin.

Like crossing a line I couldn't see.

The air changed.

Heavier.

Warmer.

And something else—

Metal.

Like the faint smell of blood.

My eyes sharpened instantly.

Alright… now we're getting somewhere.

The alley stretched longer than it should have.

Way longer.

There was no street at the end anymore.

Just more space.

More distance.

More of this place.

"…So it's not real space."

Or not normal space.

Either way—

I wasn't in the city anymore.

Not really.

I took another step.

Then another.

Each one pulling me deeper.

The ground started to change.

Cracks forming under my feet.

Thin lines at first.

Then thicker.

Darker.

Like something was pushing up from underneath.

I stopped.

Looked down.

The cracks weren't random.

They spread outward.

Slow.

Controlled.

Like something alive.

"…Yeah… I don't like that."

I stepped back slightly.

The cracks stopped.

Paused.

Then—

Kept going.

Toward me.

My eyes narrowed.

"Alright."

I shifted my stance.

If this was happening—

Then something was coming with it.

The ground split open.

Not wide.

Just enough.

And from the crack—

Something moved.

A shape.

Dark.

Unclear.

Pulling itself up slowly.

My breathing stayed steady.

Not rushing.

Not panicking.

Just watching.

Because this time—

I wasn't walking in blind.

The thing climbed out fully.

Low to the ground.

Twisted.

Not human.

Not anything normal.

Its head lifted slowly.

And its eyes locked onto me.

That same feeling hit again.

Recognition.

Like I wasn't just another target.

"…So you see me too."

It didn't respond.

Didn't hesitate.

It moved.

Fast.

Straight at me.

I reacted instantly—

Stepping to the side—

My hand moving on instinct—

And then—

Something formed.

Cold.

Sharp.

In my grip.

A blade.

I didn't question it.

Didn't stop.

Just moved with it.

The creature's claws came in low—

I twisted—

Dodged clean—

And swung.

The blade cut through it.

Clean.

Too clean.

The creature split—

Then collapsed instantly.

Gone.

Like it was never there.

I stood still for a second.

Looking at the empty space.

"…That was easy."

Too easy.

My grip tightened slightly on the blade.

So this is how it starts.

Then—

Something rose from where it fell.

Light.

Faint.

Floating upward.

I watched it for a second.

Then it moved.

Toward me.

Fast.

Before I could react—

It hit.

Straight into my chest.

My body tensed.

For a split second—

Then relaxed.

No pain.

No damage.

Just…

Something new.

I frowned slightly.

"…What was that?"

A faint flicker appeared in front of me.

Barely visible.

Like something trying to form.

Then—

It stabilized.

Just enough to read.

[System: Initializing]

My eyes locked onto it.

"…Yeah."

There it is.

I let out a slow breath.

Not surprised.

Not really.

After everything else—

This made sense.

In a weird way.

The text flickered again.

Unstable.

Incomplete.

[Essence: 1]

[Status: Integrating…]

Then it faded.

Gone.

Just like that.

But I could still feel it.

Not gone.

Just… inside.

Waiting.

I looked down at my hand.

The blade was still there.

Solid.

Real.

Not fading.

"…Alright."

That changed things.

A lot.

I looked forward again.

The alley—

No.

Not an alley anymore.

Something else.

Something bigger.

And now—

I knew.

This wasn't random.

This wasn't an accident.

I got pulled here for a reason.

And whatever this system was—

It was just getting started.

A small smile crossed my face.

"…Good."

Because this time—

I wasn't walking into it blind.

I stepped forward again.

Deeper into the unknown.

I didn't rush forward.

Not this time.

I stood there for a few seconds, letting everything settle.

The system message.

The creature.

The blade still in my hand.

"…Alright."

I exhaled slowly.

If this place worked like I thought…

Then rushing ahead blindly would just get me killed.

Again.

I looked down at my hand.

The blade felt real.

Weight.

Balance.

Like I'd held it before.

No… not before.

But it didn't feel new either.

Like my body already knew what to do with it.

That alone was strange.

But I pushed that thought aside.

One thing at a time.

I looked forward again.

The path stretched deeper.

No end in sight.

Just more cracked ground.

More of that faint red glow.

And that same feeling.

Pulling me forward.

Stronger now.

Like it was guiding me.

Or dragging me.

"…Yeah. I'm not getting dragged anywhere."

I adjusted my grip on the blade.

Then started walking.

Slow.

Controlled.

Every step measured.

Watching everything.

The ground.

The walls.

The air itself.

Because something about this place…

It wasn't stable.

Not completely.

The cracks on the ground shifted slightly as I moved.

Not opening.

Just… reacting.

Like it knew I was here.

So it's not just a space.

It's alive in some way.

That thought stuck with me.

But I didn't stop.

I kept moving.

Step by step.

Until—

Another ripple.

Different this time.

Not from the ground.

From the air.

Right in front of me.

I stopped instantly.

My eyes locked onto the spot.

"…There."

The air distorted slightly.

Like heat rising off pavement.

Then—

Something pushed through.

Not climbing this time.

Not slow.

It stepped out.

Fully formed.

Humanoid shape.

But wrong.

Too thin.

Too long.

Its arms hung lower than they should.

Its head tilted slightly to the side.

And its eyes—

Locked onto me immediately.

Yeah… stronger.

I didn't wait.

Didn't give it the first move.

I stepped forward first.

Closed the distance.

The blade came up—

I swung—

Fast—

Clean—

The creature moved.

Not back.

Not to the side.

It leaned.

Just enough.

The blade missed.

"…Tch."

It reacted instantly.

Its arm snapped forward—

Too fast—

I barely got my blade up in time—

The impact pushed me back a step.

Stronger than the last one.

Good.

That meant progress.

I steadied myself.

Watched it carefully.

Its movements were different.

Not wild.

Not aggressive.

Controlled.

Like it was reading me.

Alright… then don't give it anything to read.

I moved again.

But this time—

I changed pace.

Faster.

Then slower.

Then stopped halfway through the step.

The creature reacted.

Too early.

Its strike came out—

But I wasn't there.

"…Got you."

I stepped in immediately.

Closed the gap.

My blade drove forward—

This time—

It landed.

Clean hit.

Straight through its side.

The creature froze for half a second.

Then twisted—

Trying to counter—

But I was already moving.

I pulled the blade free—

Then struck again.

Same spot.

Deeper.

That did it.

The movement stopped.

The creature collapsed.

Gone.

I stood there for a second.

Breathing steady.

"…Better."

That one wasn't easy.

But it wasn't close either.

I was already adjusting.

Already learning.

That mattered.

Then the same thing happened again.

Light rose from where it fell.

Faint.

Floating.

I didn't move this time.

I let it come to me.

It hit my chest—

Same as before—

And the system flickered again.

Clearer this time.

[System: Integrating…]

[Essence: 3]

"…Three already."

So it stacked.

Not one at a time.

Good.

That meant this wasn't just random.

There was progression.

The text flickered again.

Then—

Another line tried to form.

Unstable.

Barely holding together.

[Function: ??? Unlocking…]

Then—

Gone.

I frowned slightly.

"…Not ready yet."

Makes sense.

Too early.

But it was coming.

Whatever this system was—

It was building.

Slow.

Step by step.

I looked forward again.

The path hadn't changed.

But the feeling had.

Stronger.

Clearer.

Like I was getting closer to something important.

Or dangerous.

Probably both.

A small breath left me.

"…Yeah."

That's how it works.

I tightened my grip on the blade again.

Then started walking.

This time—

With purpose.

Not just following the pull.

But pushing into it.

Because whatever was at the end of this—

That's what mattered.

And I wasn't stopping until I reached it.

I kept moving.

No stopping this time.

No hesitation.

The deeper I went, the more this place changed.

The ground wasn't just cracked anymore.

It was shifting.

Slow.

Like it was breathing under my feet.

"…Yeah. Definitely not normal."

I kept my steps light.

Controlled.

Watching every movement.

Because the last two?

They weren't random.

Each one felt… better.

Stronger.

More complete.

Which meant—

The next one wouldn't be simple.

I didn't have to wait long.

The air tightened again.

That same distortion.

Right ahead.

I stopped.

Blade already up.

"…Come on."

The ripple expanded.

Wider than before.

Then—

Something stepped through.

This one was different immediately.

Not thin.

Not twisted.

Built.

Balanced.

Its frame looked… right.

Like it wasn't unfinished anymore.

Its head lifted slowly.

Eyes locking onto me.

No delay.

No confusion.

Just focus.

Yeah… this is a step up.

I adjusted my stance slightly.

Didn't rush.

Didn't attack first this time.

I waited.

It moved.

Not fast.

But not slow either.

Every step measured.

Closing the distance without wasting anything.

It's watching me.

Good.

That meant I could use that.

It stepped in—

Its arm came up—

Strike incoming—

I moved first.

Quick step to the side—

Blade cutting across—

It blocked.

Clean.

No struggle.

Just stopped it.

"…Alright."

I pulled back immediately.

No overcommit.

It countered.

Fast.

Cleaner than the last ones.

I barely got my blade up—

The impact pushed me back two steps this time.

Stronger too.

I reset instantly.

Eyes locked.

Breathing steady.

So speed… strength… control.

"Nice," I muttered.

It moved again.

This time faster.

Testing me.

The strike came high—

I ducked—

Low swing—

It stepped back—

Perfect distance.

Not too far.

Not too close.

It knows spacing.

That made things harder.

Way harder.

I stepped forward again.

Changed angle.

Forced it to adjust.

It followed.

No hesitation.

No delay.

Yeah… it's reading everything.

That meant I needed to break the pattern.

I rushed in—

Fast—

Then stopped suddenly—

Mid-step.

The creature reacted early.

Its strike came out—

But I wasn't there.

"…Got you."

I stepped in instantly.

Closed the gap.

Blade thrust forward—

Deep.

Clean hit.

Right through its torso.

But—

It didn't stop.

Its arm still came down—

I twisted—

Barely avoiding the hit—

Felt it brush past my shoulder.

Too close.

I pulled the blade free—

Kicked off the ground—

Created space.

"…Not enough."

I exhaled slowly.

That should've ended it.

But it didn't.

Which meant—

This one wasn't like the others.

It didn't rely on a single point.

The creature straightened.

No stagger.

No weakness.

Like the hit didn't matter.

Yeah… that's a problem.

It moved again.

Faster now.

More aggressive.

Closing distance instantly.

Its strikes came in quick succession—

Left—

Right—

High—

Low—

I blocked two—

Dodged one—

The fourth clipped my side.

Pain flared.

Sharp.

But not deep.

"…Tch."

I pushed off again.

Created space.

Can't trade hits.

Not with this one.

I steadied my breathing.

Focused harder.

Watched everything.

Not just the movement—

The timing.

The rhythm.

Because even this—

Even something like this—

Had patterns.

It stepped forward again.

Same distance.

Same angle.

Same setup.

There.

I moved before it did.

Stepped into its range—

Its strike came—

But I was already inside it.

Too close to fully extend.

Its movement slowed.

Just slightly.

That was all I needed.

I drove the blade forward—

Deeper this time—

Then twisted—

Hard.

The resistance changed.

Not clean like before.

Not smooth.

Something gave.

The creature paused.

That tiny hesitation again.

I didn't waste it.

Second strike—

Same spot—

Then a third—

Faster—

Stronger—

Relentless.

This time—

It reacted.

Its body jerked.

Movement breaking.

Control slipping.

There it is.

I stepped back half a step—

Then lunged forward—

Full force—

Blade straight through its core.

The creature froze.

Completely.

Then—

Collapsed.

Gone.

I stood still for a second.

Breathing heavier now.

Not tired.

But feeling it.

"…Yeah…"

That one mattered.

More than the others.

I looked down at where it fell.

The light that rose from it—

Brighter.

Denser.

It moved toward me faster this time.

Like it didn't even hesitate.

It hit my chest.

The system appeared again.

Clearer than before.

[System: Integrating…]

[Essence: 7]

Another line flickered.

Stronger this time.

Holding longer.

[Function: Partial Unlock]

My eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Now we're getting somewhere."

The text stayed for a second longer.

Then shifted.

[Combat Assist: Initiated]

Then—

Gone.

I felt it immediately.

Subtle.

But there.

My body felt… sharper.

Not stronger.

Not faster.

Just—

More precise.

Like everything lined up better.

"…Yeah."

That was useful.

I rolled my shoulder slightly.

Checked my side.

Still there.

Still hurts.

But manageable.

I looked forward again.

The path ahead…

Changed.

The red glow was deeper now.

Darker.

Heavier.

And that feeling—

That pull—

Was stronger than ever.

Like I was close.

Close to something big.

I tightened my grip on the blade.

A small breath left me.

"…Good."

Because now—

This wasn't just survival.

This was progression.

And whatever was waiting ahead—

That was the real test.

I stepped forward again.

No hesitation.
