Chapter 85 - DTC : Chapter 85

Consequences

The meeting ended without answers.

Which, Raghu was beginning to realize, was becoming a habit in Coach One.

The five left Aegis territory beneath a sky of steel beams and suspended walkways.

Nobody spoke immediately.

The conversation with Cassian lingered.

Like a stone dropped into still water.

The ripples hadn't reached them yet.

But they would.

The Fourth Banner.

The name refused to leave his thoughts.

Not because of the mystery.

Because of the reaction.

Cassian hadn't been afraid.

He hadn't been impressed.

He hadn't even been surprised.

He had been cautious.

And caution from a man like Cassian felt far more dangerous than hostility.

The central districts of Coach One were busy despite the late hour.

Candidates moved between sectors.

Trading halls remained active.

Information brokers still conducted business beneath illuminated steel panels.

Life continued.

Yet something felt different.

Raghu noticed it almost immediately.

People were looking at them.

Not glancing.

Not observing.

Looking.

Openly.

The same realization struck the others.

Nathan noticed first.

His expression tightened slightly.

"You see it too."

It wasn't a question.

Vedant grinned.

"Hard to miss."

Karsh scanned the crowd.

"They know."

Ayush looked exhausted.

"I was hoping the meeting stayed private."

Nobody replied.

Because they all knew that was impossible.

Coach One survived on information.

A meeting between Aegis and the Five wasn't information.

It was currency.

And someone had already spent it.

The first sign came near one of the exchange plazas.

A conversation stopped as they approached.

Not unusual.

The second conversation did the same.

The third didn't stop.

It got louder.

"...telling you, Cassian wouldn't meet with them otherwise."

A second voice responded.

"Then it's true?"

"Of course it's true."

"The Fifth Banner exists."

Silence followed.

Not from the speakers.

From Raghu's group.

Because hearing it directly felt different.

Real.

The candidates didn't even notice they were nearby.

They were too busy discussing them.

Like weather.

Or politics.

Or some inevitable event.

Raghu kept walking.

But the words followed.

The Fifth Banner exists.

No.

It didn't.

That was the problem.

The rumor had moved beyond truth.

People no longer cared whether it existed.

They cared whether they believed it existed.

And increasingly—

They did.

Hours later the situation worsened.

The Five occupied a corner table in one of Coach One's quieter communal halls.

Ayush had spent most of the evening collecting information.

The results were not encouraging.

"I counted forty-three mentions."

Vedant nearly choked on his drink.

"Forty-three?"

"Forty-three."

Ayush rubbed his temples.

"That's only the ones I confirmed."

Nathan frowned.

"How?"

Ayush laughed.

A tired laugh.

"Because Coach One is doing what societies do."

Nobody interrupted.

Ayush continued.

"It found a story."

A pause.

"Now it's spreading it."

The explanation felt disturbingly correct.

The Five had arrived together.

Survived Ascension together.

Met with Aegis together.

From the outside, they looked exactly like a faction.

Nobody saw the truth.

Nobody saw uncertainty.

Nobody saw five survivors trying to understand a new environment.

They saw a banner.

An organization.

A movement.

And once a society embraced a narrative—

Changing it became difficult.

Karsh leaned back.

"The question isn't whether the rumor grows."

Everyone looked toward him.

"The question is who benefits."

The room grew quiet.

Because that was the correct question.

Rumors rarely spread naturally.

Someone always gained something.

The challenge was figuring out who.

Before Ayush could answer, footsteps approached their table.

Steady.

Confident.

Not hesitant.

Not nervous.

Someone with a purpose.

The Five looked up.

A young man stood before them.

Perhaps twenty.

Lean build.

Weathered clothing.

No visible faction symbols.

Yet he carried himself with unusual confidence.

Several nearby candidates immediately stopped talking.

Watching.

Always watching.

The young man placed a hand over his chest.

A gesture of respect.

Then bowed slightly.

"My name is Elias."

Nobody responded immediately.

The young man didn't seem bothered.

His eyes moved across the table.

Raghu.

Ayush.

Vedant.

Nathan.

Karsh.

Evaluating.

Confirming.

Finally he nodded.

"Good."

Vedant raised an eyebrow.

"Good?"

Elias smiled.

"I wanted to make sure the rumors were accurate."

Ayush visibly deflated.

Of course.

More rumors.

Nathan folded his arms.

"What rumors?"

The young man looked genuinely confused.

"The Fifth Banner."

There it was again.

The phrase appeared so naturally now.

As though it had always existed.

As though everyone had simply forgotten to inform them.

"We aren't a faction."

Ayush answered immediately.

Elias blinked.

Then smiled politely.

The way one humored a child.

"Of course."

The response somehow felt worse.

Because he didn't believe them.

Not even slightly.

The silence stretched.

Finally Raghu spoke.

"What do you want?"

The question cut through the confusion.

Elias straightened.

For the first time his confidence faltered.

Only slightly.

Then he reached into his coat.

Several nearby candidates shifted.

Watching.

Waiting.

The young man withdrew a folded piece of cloth.

Dark blue.

Unmarked.

Simple.

He placed it carefully on the table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody moved.

Elias took a breath.

Then said the words that changed everything.

"I would like to join."

The communal hall fell silent.

Not completely.

Just enough.

Enough for nearby conversations to pause.

Enough for attention to gather.

Enough for the moment to become visible.

The Five stared at him.

Ayush looked horrified.

Vedant looked entertained.

Nathan looked concerned.

Karsh looked thoughtful.

Raghu looked tired.

Because the truth was obvious now.

The Fifth Banner didn't exist.

Yet.

But someone had already come seeking membership.

And once people started joining a thing—

Even an imaginary thing—

It became harder and harder to pretend it wasn't real.

Across the hall, unseen by the Five, several observers quietly exchanged glances.

An Aegis representative.

A Storm scout.

A Crimson information broker.

And a silent figure sitting alone near the shadows.

Each had witnessed the same moment.

Each drew a different conclusion.

But they all agreed on one thing.

Coach One had changed.

And whether the Five understood it or not—

The Fifth Banner had just recruited its first member.
