The dining room had been set with a formality Vanessa hadn't seen since her parents' anniversary dinners as a child with the good china, the tall candles though it was the middle of the day, place cards positioned with exacting care.
She frowned. It seemed her grandfather was treating Lynette Grant as somewhat too special a guest.
She noted, with a flicker of something bitter, that Lynette had been seated directly across from her grandfather, while she and Elliott had been placed further down. She knew her Nonna was angry at her. But that did not mean he should show his anger like this!
Her hands clenched under the table. Fine. If he wanted to do that, then so be it. Just then, the old man entered a few minutes later moving with the same brisk energy he always carried despite his age.
"Nonna." Vanessa rose slightly as he passed but made no move to go to him, the way she usually would, everytime they were in a room.
