After finishing my dinner and retreating to my room, I spent the night in prayer.
No matter what I do, I will be tested. If I attend, I will be in the worst possible situation when I refuse to worship their idol. If the penalty is death, I will be outnumbered and surrounded. If I fail to attend, It will be unlikely that I can ever return to this city.
It's an easy choice, but how do I escape in such short notice? May the One True God guide me.
Late that night, when everyone had slept, I quietly exit the inn. I carry all my worldly belongings on my person, from my adventuring gear to my holy book I'm reproducing from memory.
I remember that the city gate is closed at night, but there is no return. If I can't sneak out, then I'll have to break out. A tension hangs in the air.
"Psst." A cloaked figure stands in an alley. "Come, priest."
"Who are you?" I ask.
"You wish to leave the city, do you not? Then come with me."
I have no better options. I follow the figure into the alley, and remain alert.
The figure finds a hole in the ground, and climbs down. I follow.
"Where are we?" I ask.
"My people have grudgingly come to know these tunnels very well. They reach from the city, to the dungeon, and to many other places. There is much for us to discuss. But first, l will bring you to refuge."
