The man frantically navigated through the corridors of the spire and arrived at a set of heavily guarded doors deep within the central spire.
The perimeter guards, standing clad in dark violet armor, immediately recognized him. Without a single word exchanged, they parted, their weapons lowering in synchronized deference. Bypassing the perimeter guards, he entered the room.
As the heavy doors sealed shut behind him, the overwhelming noise and activity of the outside world vanished entirely, replaced by an eerie silence. The interior of this room was incredibly simple and devoid of any lavish decorations, designed entirely for undisturbed cultivation.
In the center of the room sat a female humanoid figure. She shared his features of violet skin but radiated a far denser golden essence that marked her as a much more powerful existence.
The man did not dare to interrupt her meditation casually. He immediately dropped to one knee, bowing deeply toward the central seated figure, his posture reflecting deference. His heart hammered against his ribs, and the cold sweat beading on his forehead betrayed the intense turmoil raging within his mind.
"I too felt it, Tenyz," the female figure said, though she did not bother opening her eyes. "A disturbance in the threads of fate. A shadow passing over our sect's fate".
Tenyz kept his head bowed, "We cannot ignore this, Mother," he urged, his hands trembling slightly where they rested against his knee. "The magnitude of that premonition was unlike anything I have ever experienced in my entire life. We have to check what it is and where it originated from".
The female figure remained still for a long moment, the ambient golden mana in the room swirling gently around her form. Finally, she opened her eyes and looked at Tenyz and offered a single, solemn nod.
She then stood up gracefully without speaking a single word, her robes flowing around her without a sound.
Standing in the center of the chamber, she raised her hands and began to chant. The words she spoke were in a bizarre, ancient alien language, carrying a rhythmic cadence that caused the ambient mana in the room to vibrate and distort violently.
As her chant accelerated, streams of golden essence erupted from her body. The energy spread outward like liquid light, weaving, folding, and interlocking until it formed a massive, intricate runic circle hovering in mid-air.
Thousands of overlapping symbols represented the complex web of fate that governed their sect's entire existence.
As soon as the runic circle stabilized, the space within the ring flattened and acted as a display. Many images started to show upon them in rapid succession.
It flashed through their immediate surroundings: showing themselves in the chamber, the sprawling architecture of their spire, the heavily guarded perimeters, their sect elders engaged in deep cultivation, and their millions of disciples training.
The vision swept through the spire, the inner continents, the outer private continents, the bustling outer commercial continents of the Providence Hub, and the places where illicit trades were conducted. Everything appeared perfectly normal. There were no invading armadas, internal rebellions, or catastrophic natural disasters approaching their borders.
These images were not events happening currently; rather, she was scanning their immediate future and the fate threads connecting to their sect, searching for the anomaly that had triggered their instincts.
Her willforce pushed the boundaries of the scrying spell to the limit, bypassing the physical limitations of space and delving into the metaphysical realm of consequence. She traced the primary fate threads that sustained the Ethereal Providence Sect's supremacy, searching for fraying edges or the dark knots of impending doom.
But as the divination array attempted to trace the source of the dread, projecting its vision across the cosmos to follow the thread of fate back to its origin, the scrying spell inadvertently brushed against something powerful.
When a diviner sought the truth of another being, they usually encountered defensive artifacts, specialized concealment domains, or the natural resistance of an opponent's own power. But this felt fundamentally different.
Her scrying thread touched a wall of incomprehensible nothingness. It was an empty void that stared back at her. She felt the terrifying weight of a presence that commanded reality so completely that the very act of observing it was considered an unforgivable transgression against the natural order.
She gasped, a horrific choking sound tearing from her throat. Her eyes went wide with shock and pure agony as she felt an immense amount of her mana and willforce being violently depleted from her body.
It was as if an invisible, insatiable maw had torn away a massive chunk of her consciousness. The pain was indescribable, a searing fracture deep within her mind that forced her to the brink of blacking out.
"Tenyz! Support me! Quickly!" she shouted, her usual composure completely shattering as her legs nearly buckled.
Tenyz's eyes widened in alarm. He had never seen his mother reduced to such a state of panic. He immediately lunged forward, extending both his hands and pressing them toward the array. A torrent of his own golden essence poured out from him, feeding directly into the runic circle to stabilize his mother's failing spell and prevent a lethal backlash.
But still, even with their combined power, it was not enough.
The runic circle had already started to crack, glowing with a dangerous, volatile heat that warped the air in the chamber. The images within the display became completely distorted, twisting into a chaotic blur.
Both mother and son gritted their teeth, pushing every last drop of their mana and willforce into the runic circle in a desperate bid to maintain the connection just long enough to glimpse their aggressor.
And finally, through the chaotic, tearing static of the collapsing spell, they heard something. A voice, or perhaps the distorted echo of a transmission:
"Era%$#^##!%@#^"
The sound was completely garbled, an overlapping dissonance of frequencies that grated against their very minds. The runic circle then distorted more and more, the golden light turning blinding, until it blasted instantly!
A shockwave of conceptual energy detonated within the room, sending both figures flying backward through the air. They crashed heavily against the reinforced walls of the chamber, the impact shaking the very foundation of the room and cracking the defensive inscriptions lining the walls.
"What??" Tenyz groaned, pushing himself up from the floor, coughing violently as blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.
He stared at the dissipating sparks of the shattered array, his mind reeling in terror.
He looked toward his mother, his voice cracking with a mixture of horror and desperation. "Mother, what in the heavens was that?! Is this someone from a Great Sect? Why couldn't we see it? What kind of existence is completely shielded from our divination to the point that looking at them causes a backlash?"
To Tenyz, only the legendary monsters residing within the Great Sects could possibly possess such untouchable supremacy. Nothing else in the known universe could generate a feedback loop capable of critically injuring Astral Stage sovereigns.
The female figure struggled to her knees, clutching her chest as her breathing came in ragged, shallow gasps. She spat a mouthful of golden-tinged blood onto the floor, wiping her chin with a shaking hand.
"It doesn't matter now, Tenyz," she rasped, her eyes wide with a fear that she had not known for millions of years. In her long life, she had navigated political betrayals, survived apocalyptic wars, and outmaneuvered rival Major Sects, but she had never encountered an entity whose passive defense could nearly kill an Astral Stage diviner. "Whoever or whatever it is, its power completely defies our comprehension, and it clearly has ill intentions towards us. That premonition is a promise of eradication".
"But Mother, we haven't done anything to trigger the wrath of something this powerful!" Tenyz argued, panic bleeding into his voice as he clutched his aching head. He thought back to their recent operations, their commercial expansions, their lucrative black-market dealings. "We have remained careful".
They had always avoided stepping on the toes of the Great Sects. They had paid their dues, honored the unwritten rules of the intergalactic hubs, and never reached beyond their station.
"No. Check again! Check with everyone in the sect," the female figure commanded, her voice rising to a desperate pitch as she forced herself to stand. She grabbed Tenyz by the shoulders, her golden eyes burning with an almost manic intensity.
"We cannot even afford the gaze of a future containing this person. Such a figure can easily wipe our entire existence from the universe with a single, passing thought. We need to find whoever provoked this entity and take care of them immediately, or we will all die".
If a mere glance at the entity's fate thread could shatter her array and nearly collapse her Astral Core, an actual, physical confrontation would be a one-sided slaughter. If a foolish disciple, an arrogant elder, or a greedy subsidiary faction had unknowingly offended this being, they needed to be excised before the contagion of their mistake doomed the entire sect.
Tenyz bowed deeply, his hands shaking at his sides. The reality of the situation had fully set in.
He immediately scrambled out of the chamber, the heavy doors sealing behind him.
As he walked down the dimly lit corridor, his mind churned with a thousand thoughts, frantically reviewing every action their sect had taken over the past millennia. He thought of the Outer Commercial Continents, he thought of the Elyrian blood trade. Just days ago, there had been an incident.
An Elyrian who had somehow ascended to the Astral Stage had broken in, slaughtered an executive, and vanished. Was she connected to this? No, that was impossible. An ordinary, newly ascended Astral Stage being would never possess the kind of presence his mother had just described. Even if she had backing, who would send an entity capable of destroying an entire Major Sect over a handful of winged slaves?
No matter how hard he tried to analyze their entanglements, he couldn't think of anyone this powerful that they had made an enemy of.
Back within the room, the female figure stood frozen in place.
The remnants of the golden runic circle drifted around her like dying embers, casting long, wavering shadows across the bare walls.
She stared at the empty space where the backlash had originated, her mind utterly consumed by the insurmountable presence she had briefly touched. It was a presence that felt both ancient and entirely anomalous, an existence that commanded the rules of Fate with such authority that the universe itself seemed to bow in reverence to its passing shadow.
She wrapped her arms around herself, a sovereign of a Major Sect reduced to a terrified witness of a cosmic truth she was never meant to see.
"Just who... are you?" she whispered into the silence.
