Chapter 16 - The Keepers of Time, and the Loneliness of Time

Long before kingdoms were built and long before the first gods walked the universe, there existed a family of ancient beings whose power ruled over time itself.

At their head stood Tempestra, the Queen of Endless Ages.

She ruled over the endless flow of time, watching the past, the present, and the future. Every moment that ever existed was under her authority.

Beneath her was Kaira, the Mother of Time.

Kaira was calm, wise, and ancient beyond imagination. She gave birth to the eternal daughters and protected the balance of existence. She rarely appeared before other beings, choosing instead to watch over creation from beyond the reach of space and time.

Her eldest daughter was Aiona, the Embodiment of Time.

Aiona did not simply control time she was Time itself. Every second, every minute, every century, and every age flowed because of her existence. Though she looked no older than eighteen, she had existed since before the universe was born.

Standing beside her was Chronia, Aiona's sister and the Keeper of Time.

Chronia guarded the timeline. If anyone tried to change history or disturb the future, she would appear to restore order. No event escaped her watchful eyes.

The youngest sister was Eternia, the Eternal One.

While Aiona represented time, Eternia represented eternity. She embodied endless existence, remaining unchanged as worlds rose and fell across countless ages.

Above them all stood Tempestra, the Queen, whose command reached across every era. Even the other members of her family respected her authority, for she ensured that the flow of time remained balanced throughout creation.

Together, these four beings formed one of the oldest and most powerful families in existence.

Even the gods respected them.

Even demons feared them.

Very few knew they existed.

And among those few was Eric, the Hidden Creator.

Yet even Eric never sought to command them, because he understood a truth older than creation itself:

Without Aiona, time would never move.

Without Chronia, history would fall into chaos.

Without Eternia, existence would have no end.

Without Kaira, the flow of time would have no origin.

And without Tempestra, the balance of all ages would be lost forever.

To everyone around her, Aiona had everything.

She lived among the most powerful beings in existence.

She had a loving mother, kind sisters, and a queen who ruled with wisdom.

No one ever raised a hand against her.

No one ever hated her.

She could have anything she wanted.

Yet every day, she looked out into the endless sky with the same empty eyes.

She smiled when others smiled.

She laughed when others laughed.

But deep inside...

She felt alone.

No one knew why.

Not even Aiona herself could fully explain it.

Every morning, she would sit at the edge of the floating palace, watching time flow across countless worlds.

She watched children being born.

She watched old people take their final breath.

She watched kingdoms rise.

She watched kingdoms fall.

Everything changed.

Everything moved forward.

Everything...

Except her.

She never aged.

She never changed.

She remained the same young girl forever.

Sometimes she would quietly whisper to herself,

"Is this all there is?"

No one heard her.

She kept her thoughts hidden inside her heart.

She never wanted to worry her family.

But Kaira, her mother, noticed the change.

One afternoon, she walked over and sat beside her daughter.

The two stared into the endless sky.

After a while, Kaira smiled.

"You've been quiet lately."

Aiona smiled back.

"I'm fine."

Kaira knew she was lying.

A mother always knows.

She gently held Aiona's hand.

"If something is troubling you, you can tell me."

Aiona looked away.

"There is nothing."

Kaira wanted to ask more questions.

But she stayed silent.

She knew forcing the answer would only push her daughter farther away.

As she walked back into the palace, her heart became heavy.

For the first time in countless ages...

She did not understand her own child.

Chronia noticed it too.

She often found Aiona standing alone where no one else would go.

Looking at the stars.

Looking at distant worlds.

Looking at places she had never visited.

One day, Chronia decided to surprise her.

She brought gifts.

Beautiful dresses woven from light.

Jewels older than the universe itself.

Flowers that bloomed only once every million years.

She placed them before Aiona with a bright smile.

"I found these for you."

"They're beautiful."

Aiona looked at them.

Then smiled softly.

"Thank you."

But after that,

She quietly returned to staring into the distance.

Chronia's smile slowly disappeared.

For the first time, she felt helpless.

She could guard time itself.

She could protect history.

But she could not reach her own sister's heart.

Eternia also tried.

She invited Aiona to walk beside her through endless gardens where flowers never died.

They spoke about the stars.

About the universe.

About the beauty of existence.

For a while, Aiona smiled.

She even laughed.

But when the day ended.

The sadness returned.

It was always there.

Hidden behind her gentle face.

Waiting.

Watching.

Growing.

Even Queen Tempestra noticed.

The mighty ruler of endless ages called musicians from distant worlds.

She ordered great celebrations.

The palace was filled with music and light.

The skies danced with colors never seen by mortal eyes.

Everyone celebrated.

Everyone laughed.

Everyone was happy.

Everyone except Aiona.

She sat quietly in a corner.

Watching.

Smiling politely.

But her eyes remained empty.

When the celebration ended, Tempestra let out a quiet sigh.

"I have ruled over time for longer than stars have existed."

"I have faced endless wars."

"I have judged countless beings."

"But I cannot understand the sadness inside that young girl."

No one had an answer.

The truth was simple.

Aiona wanted freedom.

She wanted to leave the palace.

She wanted to see the worlds she had watched for so long.

She wanted to walk among ordinary people.

She wanted to laugh without rules.

She wanted to cry without hiding.

Most of all.

She wanted more power.

Not because she wished to rule.

Not because she wished to destroy.

But because she hated feeling limited.

She was Time itself.

Yet there were laws she could not break.

There were places she could not go.

There were decisions she was not allowed to make.

She hated it.

Deep inside her heart, a single question echoed every day.

"If I am Time itself..."

"Then why am I still bound by chains?"

She never spoke those words aloud.

She buried them deep inside her soul.

But every day they grew stronger.

Every day the desire for freedom grew larger.

Every day she felt more trapped.

One evening, she stood alone at the edge of the palace.

The endless wind moved through her silver hair.

She looked at the countless worlds below.

For the first time.

A single tear rolled down her cheek.

No one saw it.

Not Kaira.

Not Chronia.

Not Eternia.

Not even Queen Tempestra.

Only the silent stars witnessed the tears of the girl who was Time itself.

And somewhere beyond the reach of time.

An ancient being slowly opened his eyes.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"The day you seek freedom."

"The universe will never be the same again."
