Chapter 26 - The Edge of Sanctuary

All night long, Dalirina could not catch a single wink of sleep. The royal chambers allocated to her in the palace of Everleaf were vast, warm, and fragrant with the scent of orchids, but to her, it felt like a narrow cell, suffocating her within its high stone walls.

She stood by the balcony, watching the silver moonlight reflect off the leaves of the Great Golden Tree in the distance. She pressed her hand against her chest, feeling the frantic, erratic thumping of her heart. Just yesterday, she was merely a servant girl running through the palace corridors of Nairon, scolded by the Head Maid if she ever slackened in her duties. And today? She was suddenly thrust into the role of the "Queen of Humans, Fairies, and Dragons"—the absolute key to either the world's salvation or its utter annihilation. This rapid transformation did not bring her a sense of power; on the contrary, it planted a raw, profoundly human terror in her core. A terror of not being enough, and a fear that her very existence would burn down everyone she held dear.

The thread of her thoughts shattered as her chamber doors opened softly. She turned to find Vairo and Nazar stepping inside, the unmistakable lines of exhaustion etched deeply upon their faces. There was no time for rest; danger was closing in with every passing minute.

Vairo spoke, his tone carrying that rare, unyielding gravity: — "We have laid out everything to the King of Everleaf—the prophecy of the Shadow Kingdom, and the absolute necessity of our departure toward the lands of the Immortals to find answers before dawn breaks. He understands the severity of the situation perfectly."

Nazar nodded in urgent agreement, wiping beads of sweat from her forehead: — "Yes, and his decision was resolute. Tonight, I saw urgent dispatches and dire threats resting upon his desk from the neighboring realms. They are demanding your immediate surrender, Dalirina, in exchange for sparing Everleaf from a devastating war that would leave nothing but ruins. Yet, he refused with the unshakeable dignity of a true king."

Dalirina looked at the two of them—at Nazar, who had cast aside her pride and her life of luxury just to save her, and at Vairo, who had risked his own birthright and future to stand as her shield. A lump formed in her throat, and she spoke in a trembling voice, filled with vulnerability and human frailty: — "Why are you all doing this? I am... I am nothing but a curse that brings death wherever I go. If I had just remained a faceless servant in Nairon, the alliances wouldn't have shattered, and the armies wouldn't be marching to ignite world wars. Perhaps it would be better if I surrendered myself to the kingdoms and ended this nightmare."

Vairo took a long, commanding stride toward her, his eyes flashing with a fierce mix of intensity, affection, and comfort. He gripped her shoulders firmly, forcing her to look directly into his eyes, and spoke in a decisive tone that shook her very soul: — "Don't you ever say that again, Dalirina! You are not a curse, and you never will be. The world was already corrupt and greedy long before you appeared, and your power is the only beacon of hope left to fix it. If you think you are marching toward death alone, you are sorely mistaken... We will fight this war together, or we will burn together. Do not let your false guilt trick you into surrendering."

A silent tear slipped down Dalirina's cheek, but she nodded in agreement, feeling a strange, newfound courage coursing through her veins because of his words. Nazar offered a warm, bittersweet smile, placing a reassuring hand on Dalirina's shoulder: — "And we are your family now. We won't let anyone touch you."

In the deepest depths of the night, beneath the pitch-black shadows of the palace, their movement was not an act of treasonous flight from the King, but a calculated escape engineered by the monarch himself.

The King personally guided them through the hidden paths of the rear oasis, completely bypassing his own guards and soldiers. He did this deliberately, ensuring that their next destination would remain entirely unknown to anyone, preventing any soldier or guard from leaking the truth under potential capture or torture.

The white dragoness, Elinor, lay majestically beneath the canopy of ancient trees. The moment she caught sight of Dalirina, she raised her massive head and let out a low, rumbling purr that overflowed with absolute loyalty.

The King turned toward the three heroes. The heavy toll of aging and the sheer exhaustion of a long night filled with complex political calculations were clearly visible on his features. He looked at Dalirina with a gaze that was both deeply paternal and politically firm, speaking in a low, controlled whisper so his voice wouldn't echo through the oasis: — "The letters before me demand your head without negotiation, but the honor of Everleaf and the sanctity of the Sacred Tree forbid me from betraying the Freesia bloodline. I am smuggling you out tonight in absolute secrecy, hidden even from my own guards, so that no soul alive knows where you are heading."

The King then turned to Vairo and Nazar, placing a grateful, heavy hand on the young prince's shoulder: — "Protect the Queen, and make haste for the lands of the Immortals. As long as the eye of the world is fixed on me, I will distract the other kingdoms with empty diplomatic stalemates to buy you the time you need. Go, and do not look back."

Feeling the immense weight of this trust and the profound nobility of the King, Dalirina bowed to him with deep, heartfelt reverence: — "We will never forget your kindness, Your Majesty."

Dalirina climbed onto the dragon's back first, followed quickly by Nazar, while Vairo leaped up behind them, effortlessly securing himself into the saddle. With a final, silent nod of farewell from the King, Elinor sprinted a few heavy paces before unfurling her colossal white wings. She sliced through the midnight air, soaring high into the starlit sky—leaving behind the safe haven of Everleaf, and charting a course into the eternal mysteries of the Immortals' territory.
