By the latter half of 1989, the shooting of Fauji had become a memory. The long days under studio lights, repeated takes, and military uniforms had slowly given way to normal life once again. For Adil Ali, very little had changed on the surface. He still woke before sunrise, went for his morning runs, attended his classes at D. G. Ruparel College, and spent hours studying, reading, and practicing. Discipline remained the foundation of his life. But somewhere inside him, there was a quiet anticipation. Months of work had finally left his hands. Now, it belonged to the audience.
The evening Fauji premiered arrived without any grand celebration. Mumbai moved with its usual pace. Buses were crowded. Trains ran endlessly. Families returned home after long days. Across India, millions gathered around their television sets, unaware that for many young actors, this ordinary evening carried extraordinary significance.
Inside the Ali household, however, the atmosphere was different. Meera Sharma Ali had prepared tea and snacks much earlier than usual. She checked the television twice to make sure nothing went wrong. Though she tried to appear calm, the excitement in her eyes betrayed her. Arif Ali sat quietly with his newspaper, pretending to read while occasionally glancing at the clock. "You haven't turned the page in fifteen minutes," Meera said with amusement. Arif smiled and folded the newspaper. "I suppose reading can wait."
Adil sat beside them, calm as always. Yet even he could feel the weight of the moment. For years, he had dreamed about becoming an actor. He had imagined cameras, scripts, and sets. But he had never imagined this feeling, watching himself become part of someone else's evening.
After a long wait the moment everyone waiting for finally arrived. The title music began, and Fauji officially entered Indian homes. For the first time in his life, Adil watched himself on television. It felt strange.
The young cadet on the screen had his face and voice, but he didn't feel like himself. Cadet Imran Ali was a character. A story. A life separate from his own.
As the T.V serial started, His mother was waiting for his appearance. When that happened. Meera immediately held his arm tightly. "There you are!" she exclaimed happily. "My son is on television!" Adil laughed softly. His father, Arif observed the screen carefully before nodding once. "You look natural," he said. Coming from his father, that was praise enough.
Across the country, viewers watched with interest. But naturally, the young actor who attracted the most attention was Shah Rukh Khan. His role was larger. His energy was infectious. His smile and charm reached people effortlessly. Even among the cast, there was something special about him. He commanded attention without trying. Adil noticed it too. Even during shooting, he had understood that Shah Rukh possessed a rare quality. Some people had presence. Others had charisma. Shah Rukh seemed to have both.
As the episodes progressed, Shah Rukh Khan gradually became the face people remembered most. Although most people don't know his name yet, but his character lieutenant Abhinav Rai became the most famous character.
Although Shahrukh got the most recognition that didn't mean Adil went unnoticed. Many viewers noticed the handsome young cadet with sharp features and expressive eyes. Some male audiences appreciated his calm screen presence, while the female loved his handsome appearance. Others simply found him memorable. But unlike Shah Rukh, who naturally stood at the center of conversations, Adil quietly left an impression. People often asked, "Who is that other boy in the uniform?" Unfortunately, most didn't know his name.
Weeks passed.
Life remained surprisingly ordinary. At college, however, small changes began to appear.
Students from other classes occasionally came to see him. Some girls smiled when they passed him in the corridors. A few shyly asked whether he was the actor from Fauji. His classmates teased him, calling him "TV hero," while some professors jokingly warned him not to forget his studies after becoming famous. But fame was still very small. Most people on the streets didn't recognize him. He could still travel by train. He could still sit at tea stalls without attracting attention.
Sometimes someone would stare at him for several seconds before suddenly asking, "Weren't you in that army serial?" And after receiving confirmation, they would smile happily before returning to their lives.
One afternoon, while having tea near Matunga station, two college girls sitting nearby kept glancing at him. Finally, one of them gathered her courage.
"Excuse me… are you Cadet Imran from Fauji?" Adil smiled politely and replied. "Yes." After hearing it, Both girls looked delighted. "We watch every episode," one of them said. " We love you. You are the most handsome. We like you very much, But when it comes to the character we like the most is Lieutenant Abhinav," the other added immediately, Adil pleased after hearing the first half but after listening to the second half he didn't know how to respond. He just rubbed his nose and smiled, making both girls burst into laughter. Adil laughed as well. Honestly, he wasn't offended. Not even slightly. Because he agreed. Shah Rukh's role was larger, and his charisma was impossible to ignore. Even Adil could see why audiences loved him.
Back at home, Meera proudly told every relative who visited that her son appeared on television. She collected newspaper clippings and spoke about each episode with enthusiasm. Arif, meanwhile, remained the same. One evening, he looked at Adil and asked, "So, are people chasing you in the streets now?" Adil smiled and answered. "No." Arif nodded and said."Good." Adil looked at him. Asked, "Good?" Arif nodded. "Too much fame too early ruins people. Better to climb slowly."
That night, standing alone on the balcony, Adil looked at the sea of lights spread across Mumbai. He thought about his previous life. In that life, he had disappeared without leaving a trace. Nobody remembered him. Nobody waited for him.
But now, somewhere in India, a few people knew his face. A few girls talked about him after episodes ended. A few viewers wondered about his name. And every now and then, someone recognized him and smiled. Although It isn't fame. Not real fame. It is merely a small echo. But every echo has a source. And Adil knew something with absolute certainty. This was only the beginning. Because while the world had started noticing Shah Rukh Khan first, Adil Ali had no intention of remaining in the background forever.
One day, he would create a name that no one would need to ask about. And when that day came, he intended to stand at the very top.
