Chapter 38: The Long Conversation

They talked until 4 AM.

Vance brought them coffee at 1 AM without being asked. She did not listen at the door. She understood that whatever was happening in the anteroom was either going to resolve itself or it wasn't, and coffee was her contribution to the former option.

Lilith asked questions the way she built maps, carefully, in sequence, never asking for what she could derive from what she already had. Jonathan answered each one in full, without softening and without elaboration.

She asked about Aethel's divine exile. He told her what Arthur had taught him and what he'd extrapolated from the System's architecture.

She asked about the System.

He showed her, pulled up the interface so she could see it, watch it process, see the data feeds running. She watched it for several minutes without speaking.

"She built this," she said.

"Yes. As a control mechanism. It's been mine since the sanctum."

She looked at the interface for another long moment. He watched her look at it. There was something in her face when she focused completely on something, a quality of absolute presence that had nothing careful about it. It was probably the most honest thing about her, the focus. He had noticed it the first time she'd walked into the training arena.

He filed that under the crowded heading and did not examine it.

They compared their information for the next ninety minutes. Her investigation files and his System data were, together, significantly more complete than either was alone. Patterns emerged that neither had fully seen. Twice Jonathan found himself following a thread she had flagged and arriving somewhere he hadn't reached on his own. Twice she stopped writing and looked at him with an expression he read as involuntary reassessment, a recalibration happening in real time.

He found he wanted to see that expression again. He noted this precisely and did not act on it.

Around 3 AM she set her pen down and leaned back.

"The Guild Master has the Temple on a priority flag," she said.

"I know."

"You know why?"

"Not completely. Arthur has a theory."

"Tell me."

He told her. The restricted archive. The Guild's founding mythology. The divine correlation to Gate events that the senior staff had suppressed.

She was quiet for a while. The lamp hummed.

"If I take this through official channels," she said, "it gets classified."

"Yes."

"If I don't..."

"You're operating outside your authority."

"Which I did tonight by silencing the comm."

"Yes."

She looked at her notebook. At the map she'd been building since she sat down, different from the wall map, smaller, more precise. She looked at it the way she looked at things she was committing to keep.

Then she said something that was not about the investigation.

"At the spar," she said. "When I touched your arm."

He waited.

"I told myself it was a diagnostic read," she said. "A professional assessment of the energy signature." She looked at the notebook. Not at him. "I'm a good investigator. I don't usually lie to myself about evidence."

The room was quiet.

"Lilith," he said.

"Don't," she said. "Not yet. I'm just noting it. For the record." She looked up then, and there was something in her face that was neither her professional mask nor the fierce intensity of the arena. Something quieter than both. "I'm noting it," she said again, "and then I'm going to keep working, because that's what needs to happen right now."

He held her gaze.

"Okay," he said.

She looked at him for one more moment. Then she picked up her pen.

"Two weeks," she said. "Starting now."

She began writing.

Jonathan drank his coffee and watched her work, and said nothing, and felt the quiet between them settle like something that had been looking for somewhere to land.

Outside, the city began to lighten toward dawn.
