Chapter 43 - Chapter 42 – A New Dawn

Morning arrived quietly.

For the first time in nearly a week, the sky above Emberhollow was clear.

The violent storm that had consumed the town throughout the previous days had finally exhausted itself sometime before dawn, leaving behind little more than damp rooftops, glistening cobblestone streets, and the fresh scent of rain lingering in the cool mountain air. Golden sunlight spilled between the drifting clouds, illuminating puddles that reflected the waking town like scattered mirrors.

From the window of the small hotel room, Alex watched the first rays of sunlight creep across the forest beyond the town walls.

It looked different.

Not because the trees had changed.

Not because the mist had disappeared.

The feeling had changed.

The forest no longer seemed to watch the town.

It simply... existed.

Behind him, Riolu sat quietly near the window with its legs crossed, its crimson eyes fixed on the distant tree line. Every so often its ears twitched, sensing the countless Aura signatures hidden within the wilderness. Yesterday those Auras had felt heavy, almost suffocating, as though the entire forest had been holding its breath.

Today they felt calm.

Balanced.

Peaceful.

Alex folded his arms against the windowsill, allowing himself the smallest smile.

"I guess you really did find peace."

Riolu looked up at him before nodding softly.

"...Rio."

For several moments, neither of them spoke.

Sometimes silence said enough.

The peaceful atmosphere lasted exactly twenty-seven seconds.

The hotel room door burst open with enough force to rattle the hinges.

"I'm starving!"

Violet stumbled into the room wearing clothes that looked as though she'd thrown them on in complete darkness. Her silver hair stuck out wildly in every direction, and she rubbed one eye while suppressing an enormous yawn.

"I swear," she groaned dramatically, "I haven't slept that hard since I was six."

Alex glanced over his shoulder.

"You slept for almost thirteen hours."

"I know."

She collapsed face-first onto one of the chairs.

"I regret nothing."

Alex couldn't help letting out a quiet laugh.

It wasn't loud.

Barely more than a breath.

But Violet heard it anyway.

Her head slowly lifted.

"...Did you just laugh?"

"No."

"You definitely laughed."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

She narrowed her eyes suspiciously before pointing an accusing finger toward him.

"You're changing."

"I am?"

"Yesterday you made a sarcastic joke."

"...Maybe."

"And now you're smiling."

Alex looked away toward the window.

"I think you're imagining things."

"Oh no."

Violet grinned triumphantly.

"I knew traveling together would eventually fix you."

"you're delusional"

"shut up."

Riolu quietly covered its mouth, and Alex could have sworn the little Fighting-type was trying not to laugh as well.

He sighed.

"I'm surrounded."

"You absolutely are."

Nearly an hour later, after a breakfast large enough to concern the hotel owner, the two trainers stepped outside into the warming morning air.

The town was alive.

People moved through the streets carrying crates, repairing storm damage, and reopening shops that had remained closed during the worst of the weather. Children chased one another through puddles while older residents chatted outside their homes, many of them smiling in a way Alex hadn't seen since arriving in Emberhollow.

The fear was gone.

No one mentioned the Guardian.

No one spoke about the haunted forest.

Yet somehow everyone seemed to know something had changed.

An elderly woman sweeping water from her doorstep paused as Alex and Violet walked past.

She offered them a warm smile.

"It feels lighter today."

Alex slowed slightly.

"What does?"

She looked toward the distant forest.

"The air."

There was no hesitation in her voice.

"For years, waking up always felt..." She searched for the right words before shaking her head. "...Heavy. Like something was watching us."

Her smile grew gentler.

"This morning it doesn't."

Alex followed her gaze.

Beyond the rooftops, the towering pines of Emberhollow stood motionless beneath the clear blue sky.

Whatever burden had haunted those woods had finally been lifted.

"I'm glad," he said quietly.

"So am I."

Their next destination was the League Ranger station near the eastern gate.

Unlike the rest of the town, the station remained busy.

Uniformed Rangers hurried between offices carrying reports while Flying-type Pokémon came and went through the open windows, transporting messages to neighboring settlements. Several trainers wearing muddy boots appeared to have returned from patrol only moments earlier.

As Alex and Violet entered, one of the Rangers immediately recognized them.

"You're the trainers who went into the forest yesterday."

Alex nodded.

"We were."

The Ranger set aside the papers in his hands before studying the two of them carefully.

"...Something happened in those woods."

It wasn't a question.

Alex exchanged a brief glance with Violet.

After a moment he answered honestly.

"Yes."

The Ranger remained silent.

Then another officer approached carrying a clipboard.

"No Ghost sightings since sunrise," she reported.

"No unexplained disappearances."

"No strange Aura readings."

The first Ranger slowly exhaled.

"I've worked here for fourteen years."

His eyes drifted toward the forest outside.

"I've never seen that happen."

Alex chose his next words carefully.

"I think... whatever was keeping the forest trapped is gone."

The Ranger didn't press for details.

Perhaps he sensed there were answers better left buried.

Instead, he simply extended his hand.

"Then thank you."

Alex accepted the handshake.

"It wasn't just us."

"No," the Ranger agreed with a faint smile.

"...But you were there when it mattered."

As they left the station, Violet remained unusually quiet.

Only after they had walked several streets away did she finally speak.

"You didn't tell them about the grave."

"No."

"You didn't tell them about the photograph either."

Alex shook his head.

"If they knew..."

"They'd investigate."

"They'd dig everything up."

Violet looked back toward the forest.

For a long moment she said nothing.

Then she nodded.

"Some people deserve to rest."

Alex smiled faintly.

"So do some Pokémon."

The conversation ended there.

Neither of them felt the need to say anything more.

Far above the town, hidden among the broken stones of an abandoned watchtower overlooking Emberhollow, a lone figure watched the two trainers disappear into the bustling streets below.

A silver mask concealed every trace of emotion.

One of the other cloaked members stepped from the shadows.

"They survived."

"They did."

"The Guardian is gone."

The masked leader remained silent for several moments.

Finally he spoke.

"It chose peace."

There was neither anger nor disappointment in his voice.

Only quiet acceptance.

"What about the boy?"

The question lingered between them.

The leader continued watching Alex from across the valley.

"He solved a mystery that has eluded us for years."

"...Should we eliminate him?"

The leader slowly shook his head.

"No."

His voice became almost thoughtful.

"A blade is only dangerous when you understand where it will strike."

He turned away from the ruined wall.

"For now..."

"...we watch."

The two cloaked figures disappeared into the shadows without another word.

As the afternoon sun climbed higher into the sky, Alex and Violet finally reached the northern road leading away from Emberhollow.

Riolu walked comfortably beside Alex while Ceruledge followed a few steps behind with its usual silent composure. Grovyle leapt effortlessly between the branches overhead, occasionally stopping to ensure the group remained together before disappearing into the canopy once more. Zorua trotted beside Violet, occasionally transforming into Riolu simply to annoy the real one, earning an exasperated sigh every single time.

For the first time in what felt like forever...

There was no immediate danger waiting around the next corner.

No haunted forest.

No hidden cultists.

No desperate battles.

Just an open road stretching toward the horizon beneath a bright summer sky.

Violet inhaled deeply before smiling.

"So..."

Alex glanced sideways.

"So?"

She grinned.

"Where are we getting lunch?"

Alex stared at her for several seconds.

After everything they had survived...

That was her first concern.

He couldn't help smiling.

"I thought you were still full."

"I was."

She placed a hand dramatically over her stomach.

"That was almost an hour ago."

Alex laughed.

A genuine one this time.

Beside them, Riolu blinked before looking up at its trainer.

For the first time since arriving in this world...

Alex looked...

Happy.

And as the two friends continued down the winding road together, leaving Emberhollow and its ghosts behind, neither of them noticed the lone Murkrow perched silently atop a distant pine tree.

Its crimson eyes followed them until they disappeared over the horizon.

Then, with a single flap of its wings, it vanished into the endless blue sky.
