Chapter 22 - Vines, Visions, and Very Careful Practice

Jean trudged through the glowing undergrowth of the jungle realm, carefully stepping over roots that seemed a little too eager to wrap around his ankles. The group had decided to extend their exploration for one more day before returning to the main camp mostly because Jean had quietly requested more time to practice without an entire legion watching his every move.

Just controlled exercises today, he reminded himself, focusing on a small energy flow in his palm. Small pulses. Gentle sword forms. No dramatic gestures. No laughing. Definitely no coughing near anything that might bloom into a new empire.

The jungle, unfortunately, had opinions.

A cluster of glowing vines ahead shifted as he approached, curling into what looked suspiciously like a welcoming arch. Jean tried to walk under it normally. The vines brightened and formed a perfect pathway, glowing runes appearing along the sides like natural streetlights.

Varak, marching a respectful distance behind, beamed with pride. "Even the jungle itself paves the way for the Warmonger! A realm bending to your will without command."

Lirael ghosted through the foliage nearby, collecting samples. "The vines respond to your residual energy. They're forming protective patterns. I've noted seventeen new growth responses already. Your mere presence is terraforming the ecosystem."

Elara walked beside Jean, occasionally sending small stabilizing pulses to ease the humidity's effect on his body. "You're trying so hard to be inconspicuous. It's almost working. Just don't look too thoughtful, they'll think you're planning the conquest of the canopy next."

Jean managed a small, tired smile. "Today's goal is basic control. Nothing flashy. I just want to understand how Jan used this power without turning every training session into a national event."

He stopped in a small clearing and tried a simple energy exercise he'd glimpsed in the previous day's fragments. A soft crimson glow formed around his hand, stable, controlled, almost peaceful. For a moment, it felt like genuine progress.

The jungle responded anyway.

A nearby vine extended curiously toward the glow. Jean reached out instinctively to gently push it back. The contact sent a tiny feedback loop through the mantle. The vine bloomed with beautiful crimson flowers that released a soft, harmonious light across the clearing.

Varak dropped to one knee immediately. "He communes with the realm and grants it new beauty! A blessing for all who follow!"

Lirael's eyes sparkled as she examined the flowers. "The vines evolve under your touch. This could revolutionize agriculture across allied realms. Your 'gentle practice' yields miracles."

Jean let out a small, relieved chuckle at the pretty result. The sound resonated softly with the glowing flora. More vines bloomed in response, forming a natural, protective canopy overhead that filtered the light into beautiful patterns.

The small group (and the inevitable handful of soldiers who had "just been scouting nearby") fell to their knees in reverence.

"He laughs and the jungle itself celebrates!"

"The Warmonger brings harmony with the slightest effort!"

Elara covered her mouth to hide her smile. "You were trying to gently push a vine away. They saw a divine blessing. Again."

Jean sat down on a convenient glowing root, processing another small fragment from Jan's memories that had surfaced during the exercise. It was just a glimpse this time, Jan as a young man, practicing alone in hidden groves, learning to stabilize tiny portals to protect his family from early incursions. He felt the distant, neutral touch of the entity again, a vast presence that had watched the multiverse slowly fraying and chosen vessels like Jan to serve as temporary anchors.

No big revelations. Just another quiet piece: The entity hadn't forced anything. It had simply created conditions for a compatible soul to take the mantle when the previous bearer could no longer hold it. Someone less tied to this world's cycles of war and fear.

Jean kept these private thoughts to himself. The secret remained locked away, known only to the distant Fracture King, who was biding its time.

As the group continued their careful exploration, Jean tried one more basic exercise, a simple sword form he had seen in the fragments. The swing was slow and deliberate. A faint crimson after-image followed the blade, cutting a single vine cleanly without damaging anything else.

The cut vine fell and formed a perfect, natural loop on the ground, like a ceremonial wreath at his feet.

Varak's voice boomed with emotion. "He bestows symbols of victory and harmony even in the simplest forms! We are witnessing the birth of true balance!"

Lirael was already documenting everything. "The wreath pattern repeats. Symbolic. I will archive this for future training manuals."

Elara helped Jean up after the exercise, her voice soft. "You're learning more about him, aren't you? Slowly. Piece by piece. About the power… and maybe why it's here at all."

Jean nodded carefully. "A little. He was trying to protect something once. There's… something bigger that set all this in motion. It's still vague. But I think the mantle was meant for balance. Not conquest."

He stopped there. No mention of trucks, soul transfers, or being from another world. The secret stayed safe.

As they finally turned back toward the main portal, a scout met them with good news: The neutral realms continued sending cautious envoys, inspired by rumors of the "Jungle Harmony Training." No new immediate threats. The Fracture King's probes had quieted, for now.

Jean allowed himself a small, genuine moment of relief as they stepped through the portal back to the main camp.

Baby steps were working.

The entity's purpose was still mostly hidden.

And the multiverse, for once, seemed content to let him have one quiet day.

But as the portal closed behind them, one glowing vine back in the jungle shifted slightly, forming a faint, almost curious question mark pattern before fading.

The answers would come slowly.

Very slowly.
