Chapter 50 - Tinkering

When the duo entered the storage room, they saw CatNap sleeping on the ground, Bubba Bubbaphant eyeing a gadget with his trunk, and KickinChicken looking at it over his shoulder.

KickinChicken spotted the duo before he had happy eyes. "Hey, kid!" he shouted, which made Bubba Bubbaphant flinch and let go of the gadget.

Michelle quickly grabbed the handle and aimed the red hand before pulling the right trigger, launching it and grabbing the gadget before retracting it. Bubba Bubbaphant glared at KickinChicken, which made him flinch. "Have you lost your mind?!" he shouted.

KickinChicken looked away with a sweatdrop. "Sorry, I didn't think you were that skittish," he said.

Bubba Bubbaphant groaned and placed his padded hand against his face. "And you wonder why I don't let you in this place..." he said, lowly.

Michelle crutched toward Bubba Bubbaphant with Suzy following behind her. "I believe this gadget is yours," she said before holding the red hand out.

Bubba Bubbaphant turned to Michelle and grabbed the gadget with his trunk. "Thank you, Misha," he said as he pulled it out of the red hand.

Michelle nodded before looking at the gadget. "What is that thing anyway?" she asked.

Bubba Bubbaphant looked at the gadget. "Well... I'm trying to turn it into a gadget that disables electronics," he said. "The Doctor uses the security cameras and TVs to watch us."

Bubba Bubbaphant placed the gadget on the table. "I'm so close to cracking it..." he continued.

KickinChicken picked the gadget up, which made Bubba Bubbaphant flinch, and spun it on his finger. "But right now, it's just a high-tech-looking sphere," he said.

The gadget slipped off KickinChicken's finger and hit the ground, destroying it, which made most of the group flinch. KickinChicken looked at the broken gadget with a sweatdrop. "Uh... oops..." he said, lowly.

Bubba Bubbaphant looked down, trembling. "Get out," he said.

KickinChicken looked at Bubba Bubbaphant. "Huh?" he asked.

Bubba Bubbaphant glared at KickinChicken and pushed him toward the opening. "Get out, get out, get out of my work area!!" he shouted.

KickinChicken looked at Bubba Bubbaphant. "Alright, alright, I'll go; sorry..." he said before leaving the area.

Bubba Bubbaphant sighed and placed his padded hand against his head. "That took me days to work on that..." he said, lowly.

The duo approached the pieces and kneeled before picking them up. "Don't worry; Rome wasn't built in a day," Michelle said before she stood up with the crutch's help, and they placed them on the table.

Bubba Bubbaphant nodded. "That's true..." he said, lowly.

Michelle turned her head to CatNap before crutching toward him, which made Suzy follow behind. "Hey, buddy..." she said, lowly.

CatNap slowly opened his eyes before looking at Michelle when she was close to him. "ANGEL..." he said, lowly.

Michelle gently smiled and petted CatNap's cheek with her right hand. "How are you holding up?" she asked.

CatNap remained silent and lay his head on the ground, which concerned Michelle. "I think he's uncomfortable with his mural on the wall," Bubba Bubbaphant said.

Michelle turned to Bubba Bubbaphant with the crutch's help. "I can't say I blame him, though... if I had something negatively painted about me, I'd feel uncomfortable as well," he continued. "I could ask DogDay or Doey if we could cover that part."

Michelle nodded. "That would be appreciated," she said.

CatNap looked at Bubba Bubbaphant. "THANK YOU, BUBBA..." he said.

Bubba Bubbaphant nodded. "You were quieter than the annoying chicken; it's the least I could do," he said.

Michelle looked down with a hum; CatNap looked at her. "IS SOMETHING WRONG...?" he asked.

Michelle looked at CatNap. "Well... there's something I've been meaning to ask, but it might be too... sensitive..." she said.

CatNap hummed. "GO AHEAD..." he said, lowly.

Michelle placed her right hand against her throat. "Your voice box... did you damage it yourself?" she asked.

CatNap shook his head. "THE SCIENTISTS GAVE ME A BROKEN VOICE BOX..." he said.

Michelle hummed. "In that case, do you mind if I take a look at it?" she asked.

The Smiling Critters were shocked. "I don't think that's a good idea," Bubba Bubbaphant said. "There are many factors that can go wrong... like if he accidentally emits his Red Smoke or if it short-circuits and he can never speak again..."

Michelle nodded. "I'm well aware of the risks..." she said before looking at Bubba Bubbaphant. "Plus, I used to disassemble voice boxes from foster kids who were rude to me as a sort of revenge."

Bubba Bubbaphant stared at Michelle. "Is that so?" he asked.

Michelle nodded and looked at CatNap. "The only issue I know of would probably be reaching for CatNap's voice box," she said before looking at Bubba Bubbaphant. "My arms are too short, and I don't think yours can grab anything, no offense."

Bubba Bubbaphant waved it off. "None taken," he said before looking at his padded hands. "It's very difficult to grab things if you have padded feet for hands."

The duo realized something before looking at Suzy, which made her tilt her head, confused. "What?" she asked.

Michelle smiled a bit. "You can reach CatNap's voice box with your stretchy arms," she said. "That is... if you're willing to help."

Suzy stared at the duo before smiling and nodding. "You can count on me, Misha!" she shouted.

Michelle smiled before looking at CatNap. "You probably didn't care much about your broken voice box back then, but... I think people will see you in a different light if you have a different voice," she said.

CatNap stared at Michelle before looking down. "But if you don't want me touching your voice box, that's fine too," she continued, which made him glance at her. "That decision... is up to you."

CatNap remained silent before looking at Michelle. "ALRIGHT..." he said, which made her smile.

Michelle examined the zipper on CatNap's underside. "First, we'll need a small gap to reach that voice box," she said.

CatNap nodded as he carefully grabbed his pendant before pulling it, which opened the zipper a bit and made him grunt in pain. Michelle looked at CatNap, surprised. "So that acts like a zipper tab... and here I thought it was just a choker with a pendant..." she said, lowly.

After CatNap moved his paw away from his pendant, Michelle looked at Suzy. "Alright, you're up; but remember, you have to be very careful and delicate," she said. "One mistake could harm CatNap."

Suzy nodded. "Okie dokie," she said before approaching CatNap.

When Suzy was close to CatNap, she slowly stretched her arm into the hole in his chest. As Suzy moved her arm up, she stuck her tongue out, disgusted. "Ew... this feels gross..." she said, lowly.

Michelle looked at Suzy. "It'll be over soon; all you have to do is find a square device," she said.

Soon after, Suzy felt something inside CatNap, which surprised her. "Hang on, I think I found something..." she said before carefully feeling it around her hand. "It's definitely square-shaped..."

Michelle looked at CatNap. "Try talking to test it," she said.

CatNap nodded. "HELLO..." he said.

Suzy was shocked and looked at the duo. "I felt it!" she shouted.

Michelle nodded. "That's his voice box," she said. "Now, carefully pull it out of him."

Suzy nodded as she carefully retracted her arm until she pulled a black square box with wire and flesh entangled to one another out of CatNap with blood on it and her arm. "Here it is!" she shouted.

When Suzy held the voice box out to Michelle, she grabbed it and examined the screws on it with a hum. "This calls for a Phillips screwdriver," she said.

Bubba Bubbaphant turned to his workbench and grabbed a small Phillips screwdriver off it with his trunk before holding it out to Michelle. "Here," he said.

Michelle grabbed the Phillips screwdriver in her right hand, which made Bubba Bubbaphant let go of it. "Thank you," she said before she started unscrewing the voice box.

After Michelle finished unscrewing the voice box, she lifted the top cover before placing it in her palm.

Michelle looked inside the voice box and noticed a few of the wires were disconnected. "That explains a lot," she said as she held the Phillips screwdriver in her mouth before digging her hand into her right pocket.

Michelle pulled her Swiss Army knife out before pulling on the small silver part with her thumb, which revealed tweezers.

Bubba Bubbaphant held Michelle's Swiss Army knife with his trunk as she grabbed the tweezers before looking at the voice box. "You might feel small bits of shock, so I'm gonna need you to stay very still..." she said with the Phillips screwdriver in her mouth.

CatNap nodded as Michelle carefully lifted a loose wire with the tweezers before placing it in the right spot, which caused him to jolt a bit but stay still.

After Michelle moved the wires back into the right place, she placed her tweezers in her palm and grabbed the top part of the voice box before lining it and the screws up with the bottom part.

Michelle grabbed the Philips screwdriver out of her mouth before screwing the top part back on; she looked at CatNap. "Try it now," she said.

CatNap stared at his voice box. "Hello," he said, which shocked himself and Bubba Bubbaphant.

Suzy smiled and raised her arms. "Yay! It works!" she shouted.

Michelle smiled and handed Suzy the voice box. "Now place it back where you once found it," she said.

Suzy grabbed the voice box. "Okie dokie!" she shouted before carefully stretching her arm with the voice box back through the hole in CatNap's chest.

Suzy stuck her tongue out as she carefully moved her arm around. "I wanna say... it was right here..." she said, lowly, before placing the voice box back inside CatNap.

After Suzy retracted her arm, CatNap grabbed his pendant before zipping himself up, which made him grunt a bit.

As Michelle sighed in relief, Bubba Bubbaphant looked at her. "That's incredible..." he said, lowly, as he held her Swiss Army knife out to her. "For your age, you're an incredible tinkerer."

Michelle smiled a bit and switched the Phillips screwdriver with Bubba Bubbaphant for her Swiss Army knife before placing the tweezers back inside. "It's something I've done quite a lot," she said.

CatNap stared at Michelle as she put her Swiss Army knife in her pocket with tears pricking his eyes. "You really are an Angel," he said.

When Michelle turned to CatNap with the crutch's help, he carefully lay his head against her. "Thank you..." he said, lowly.

Michelle smiled and petted CatNap's head. "Don't mention it," she said.

Unbeknownst to the group, someone leaned against the opening. "So, this is where you've been," a male voice said, which surprised some of them.

Most of the group turned their heads to the back and saw Kevin. Suzy smiled and waved. "Big Brother, look; I helped Misha fix CatNap's voice box!" she shouted.

Kevin hummed. "Is that right?" he asked rhetorically. "Good job, half-pint."

Michelle looked at CatNap and patted his head a bit. "You rest up, OK?" she said.

CatNap stared at Michelle before nodding. "OK..." he said, lowly.

Michelle smiled before crutching toward Kevin, which made Suzy follow behind her. When the duo was close to Kevin, he looked at Suzy's arm and noticed the blood on it. "Ah, jeez, your arm is covered in blood," he said.

Suzy raised the arm with blood on it. "It's OK; I can shake it off!" she shouted.

Kevin quickly held Suzy's arm. "Nope, don't do that; we don't want blood all over the walls, do we?" he asked.

Suzy hummed. "I guess not..." she said, lowly.

Kevin nodded. "Head to the Infirmary and ask Medic or Bobby to get the blood off it," he said.

Suzy nodded. "OK..." she said before walking ahead.

When Suzy was out of sight, Kevin sternly looked at Michelle. "Did you seriously have her stick her arm inside CatNap?" he asked.

Michelle looked at Kevin. "Well, what was I supposed to do?" she asked rhetorically. "My arms couldn't reach up there, and Bubba couldn't grab anything with his hands."

Kevin slightly glared at Michelle. "You could've asked me to grab the thing," he said.

Michelle deadpanned at Kevin. "You were going to intentionally break it anyway," she said, which made him flinch a bit before she pointed at him. "And don't give me that 'I wasn't gonna' bullshit; I know how you work."

Kevin gritted his teeth a bit before annoyingly sighing and closing his eyes before rubbing them. "Alright, I'll give you that one..." he said, lowly, before pulling his hand away and looking at Michelle. "But next time, tell me about things involving my sister before doing it, OK?"

Michelle nodded. "Fair enough," she said, which made Kevin nod before they walked away.

When the duo was out of sight, Bubba Bubbaphant sighed before approaching his workbench and looking at the broken pieces on it. "Finally, some quiet time..." he said, lowly, before he started tinkering.

CatNap stared at the hallway. I'll protect Angel no matter what... even if it means I have to kill the False God myself... he thought before laying his head on the ground and closing his eyes.

As the duo left the hallway, Michelle stretched a bit and yawned, which made Kevin look at her. "That tired out, huh?" he asked.

Michelle sighed. "Yeah... deeper in this place makes you lose track of time, and it doesn't help that it was nighttime when I ran away from my orphanage along with—" she stopped midsentence when she turned her head to Kevin and noticed his stern eyes.

Michelle nervously looked at Kevin with a sweatdrop. "Something tells me I shouldn't have told you that..." she said, lowly.

Kevin quickly wrapped his hands around Michelle, which made her yelp. "No, you shouldn't have," he said before carrying her on his shoulder.

As Kevin walked toward one of the tents, Michelle struggled and hit her crutch on the back of his leg, which made a few smaller toys look at them. "Let me go, damn it! I'm not that tired!!" she shouted.

Kevin grabbed the crutch before sternly looking at Michelle. "Shut up, idiot! Staying up for almost a day or two isn't healthy!!" he shouted.

Bobby BearHug entered the main room and looked at the duo. "What's with all the shouting? The patients can hear the racket from back there," she said.

Kevin looked at Bobby BearHug and let go of the crutch before pointing at Michelle. "This idiot has been awake for more than a day," he said.

Bobby BearHug remained silent before closing her eyes. "I don't think what you're doing is right," she said.

Michelle grinned at Kevin. "Hah!" she shouted, which made him roll his eyes.

Bobby BearHug looked at Michelle. "She should be wrapped in a blanket and set in a comfortable environment," she said.

Michelle flinched while Kevin grinned. "And this is why you're one of my favorites," he said.

Bobby BearHug approached the duo. "First things first, we'll need to take that GrabPack off her," she said.

Dough arms sprouted out of Kevin's back before reaching the GrabPack's straps and undoing them. "Done," he said.

Bobby BearHug grabbed the crutch out of Michelle's hand and set it to the side before carefully taking the GrabPack off her. "You don't have to do this, Bobby," she said.

After setting the GrabPack to the side, Bobby BearHug carefully placed her hands between Michelle's arms before holding her. "Sorry, Doctor's orders," she said.

A dough arm grabbed a large blanket before Kevin held the corners with four hands. "Now to wrap you up," he said with a grin.

Michelle's face was pale as Kevin approached her. Soon after, Michelle sat inside a tent with her body wrapped in a blanket, almost like a newborn baby, and tears pricked her eyes. "This is humiliating..." she said, lowly.

Kevin snorted and tried not to laugh as his extra dough arms retracted inside him, which made Michelle glare at him. "Yeah, keep laughing it up, you dick! I'm so gonna get revenge on you for this!!" she shouted.

Bobby BearHug placed the GrabPack and crutch inside the tent near Michelle's bag. "I guess this'll be her tent; if you need anything, ask," she said before approaching the infirmary's hallway.

Kevin looked at Bobby BearHug. "Thanks for the help," he said, which made her wave back before entering the hallway.

Kevin entered the tent Michelle was in before sitting beside her. "Now then, go to sleep already," he continued.

Michelle grumbled. "I told you I'm—" she let out a loud yawn before sighing a bit. "Not even tired..."

Kevin looked at Michelle. "That yawn says otherwise..." he said before looking forward. "There's no need to be defensive around here."

When Michelle looked at Kevin, she noticed his smile, which surprised her. "This area... is a safe place..." he said, lowly.

Michelle remained silent before looking down; soon after, she lay her head against Kevin's arm, which made him glance at her. "Then... can you stay with me while I'm asleep?" she asked.

Kevin flinched a bit and looked away while rubbing the back of his neck. "I-I don't think—" he stopped midsentence when he saw Michelle looking at him with soft eyes, which made him freeze up. "Please...?"

Kevin stared at Michelle with a slight blush before sighing. "Alright..." he said, lowly, before glancing away. "It... might be best if I held you again... just so that your ankle gets better..."

Michelle chuckled a bit and nodded. "Makes sense..." she said.

Kevin nodded as he scooped Michelle up before placing her in his lap. As Michelle lay her head against Kevin's chest, she heard his heartbeat, which surprised her. Even though you're made of dough, I can still hear your heartbeat... she thought.

Soon after, Michelle's eyes grew weary. It sounds... calming... she thought before closing them.

Kevin looked away with a blush. "I guess you can consider this your revenge, huh?" he asked.

Kevin heard no response, which surprised him. "Misha?" he asked.

When Kevin looked at Michelle, he noticed she was fast asleep, which made him smile. Kevin wrapped his arms around Michelle and lay his head on top of hers. "Good night, Misha..." he whispered before he fell asleep.
