Inspector Megure furrowed his brow.
"Higashino's right!"

His sharp gaze swept over every suspect.
Especially the two strange men dressed all in black.
"Kudo-kun makes a good point."

Inspector Megure's gaze snapped instantly onto the two tall men in black.
Head-to-toe black, from coat to hat, radiating a cold menacing air—they might as well have had "VILLAIN" written across their foreheads.
"Yeah, yeah—those two look like the culprits the moment you set eyes on them!"
"Dressing like that in broad daylight—what are they trying to do, rob a bank?"
"Anyone who goes out dressed like that is definitely up to no good!"
"Exactly—even if they didn't kill anyone, they must've done something else wrong!"

A crowd of onlookers buzzed with chatter, everyone pointing and muttering at the two men in black.
"Boss!"
The burly man's right hand moved swiftly toward the inside of his coat.
"Nonsense!"
The silver-haired man snapped, his right hand pressing down in a sharp gesture.
The burly man at his side stopped immediately.
"Inspector Megure, accusations need evidence—you can't judge someone by their appearance."
"People are born with their looks, and what they wear is their own business."
"How can you judge someone's character based on nothing but their face or their clothes?"
Makoto quickly stepped in to smooth things over.
He knew exactly who these two were.

These were people who blew up bullet trains and buildings on a whim—who had even flown a helicopter and opened fire on Tokyo Tower.
If they were actually backed into a corner, this place would turn into a firefight in seconds!
That was terrifying!
He hadn't even won Ran over yet—he couldn't die in a place like this!
"I suppose that's true!"
"What you wear really is a personal choice."
"Right—just like my dad can't stop me from wearing his women's clothes, we can't stop them from dressing all in black."
"Exactly—it's not their fault they're ugly either!"

Inspector Megure let out a hearty laugh and brushed the whole thing aside.
"Inspector, I already know who the culprit is."
Shinichi cut in hastily.
He hadn't found the most crucial piece of evidence yet.
But if he stayed quiet any longer, that guy was going to steal every last bit of the spotlight.
"Oh, Kudo-kun—dependable as always!"
"Ha ha ha… come on then, out with it—who's the culprit?"
Inspector Megure clapped him on the shoulder and asked eagerly.
That was the great high school detective for you!
Cracked the case in no time flat, and completely free of charge—not a single yen from the department.
Truly moving!
"There is only one truth, and the culprit is—"
Shinichi struck his best pose with both hands in his pockets, looking cool on the outside while his brain worked frantically to fill in the final piece of the puzzle.
"Hitomi-san!"
"You're the culprit, aren't you?"
Makoto seized on the pause and got the answer out first.
"Huh?"
"How is that possible?"
"Hitomi!"
"No way!"

Several people who knew her gasped one after another.
"Wh-what?"

"The fruit knife was clearly in Aiko's bag—Aiko is the culprit, so how could it be me?"

He cleared his throat twice, mind churning over and over—fingerprints, fingerprints, fingerprints.
But no matter how hard he thought, he couldn't figure out what fingerprints had to do with the culprit.
Could it be—!
The culprit killed someone with their fingerprints???
"Kudo-kun, what exactly is going on here?"
Inspector Megure looked over at him, puzzled.

"Why don't you let Higashino answer this one!"
"After all, you're the one who found the evidence—I wouldn't want to steal your credit."

Shinichi scratched the back of his head with an awkward laugh.
"All right then, I'll explain it myself."
Makoto said with a resigned sigh.
Surely that great high school detective didn't genuinely have no idea what fingerprints were?
And these police officers too…
'A beat cop not knowing is one thing—but you're all police detectives!'
