Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Protocol Omega

The storm above the academy continued growing. Dark clouds stretched across the sky in every direction while crimson lightning flashed through their depths like rivers of blood flowing across the heavens. What should have been an ordinary afternoon had transformed into something unnatural. Students gathered inside reinforced evacuation shelters, staring through armored windows, while instructors moved throughout the academy with increasingly grim expressions. Nobody truly understood what was happening, yet everyone could feel it. The atmosphere itself had changed. The air felt heavier. The silence felt deeper. Every instinct whispered that something enormous was approaching. At the center of Training Sector Three, Huang Ming remained motionless amidst the devastation. Black mist surrounded him in an ever-expanding sphere while fragments of shattered steel floated weightlessly around his body. The arena no longer resembled a training facility. Massive craters stretched across the battlefield while deep fractures scarred the reinforced foundations beneath the platform. Entire sections of infrastructure had collapsed, yet Huang remained standing at the center of it all like the eye of a storm. Every few moments, there's another pulse of energy spread outward from him, causing nearby debris to tremble and the surrounding mist to shift like a living creature.

Inside the synchronization space, Huang stared toward the Void Sovereign while countless questions raced through his mind. The revelation that ancient entities across the universe were awakening had already shattered everything he thought he understood about reality. Yet one question remained above all others. "Who are they?" he finally asked. The Void Sovereign remained silent for several moments. The gigantic figure stood amid the darkness, broken chains drifting around its immense body. Unlike before, the synchronization space no longer appeared unstable. The collapsing void had become strangely calm. Fractures still existed, but they no longer spread uncontrollably. It was as though the awakening itself had reached a temporary equilibrium. Finally, the giant figure spoke. Its voice rolled through the darkness like distant thunder.

"Enemies."

Huang frowned immediately. "Enemies of who?"

The glowing eyes shifted toward him.

"Everyone."

The answer sent a chill through Huang's spine. The Void Sovereign slowly raised one hand. As it did, fragments of memory appeared once more throughout the synchronization space. Vast battlefields stretched endlessly through the darkness. Entire star systems burned. Fleets larger than worlds exploded amidst oceans of crimson light. Colossal beings fought among collapsing galaxies while civilizations disappeared beneath waves of destruction. Then Huang saw something else. Shadows. Not ordinary shadows. Creatures. Massive forms hidden behind darkness so dense that even the synchronization space struggled to reveal them. They moved through the stars like living voids, consuming everything in their path. Worlds vanished. Suns dimmed. Entire civilizations disappeared without leaving behind even a trace of dust. The memory shattered instantly, leaving Huang shaken.

"What were those?"

The Void Sovereign lowered its hand.

"The Devourers."

Even the name itself felt wrong. Ancient. Forbidden. Dangerous. Huang swallowed hard.

"And they are coming here?"

The Void Sovereign's expression remained unreadable.

"No."

Relief flooded Huang for a brief moment before the giant continued.

"They never stopped coming."

Back in reality, another pulse erupted from Huang's body. The black mist surrounding the battlefield expanded further while crimson lightning flashed across the skies above the academy. Several students watching from distant shelters gasped as strange symbols briefly appeared within the storm clouds before vanishing again. Far above the battlefield, inside the observation room, tension continued rising. Warning messages filled every display. Dimensional instability was increasing. Ancient signals were multiplying. Protocol Omega awaited authorization. The older instructor stared at the final warning while his hands trembled slightly. Activating Protocol Omega would change everything. One younger instructor finally broke the silence.

"What exactly is Protocol Omega?"

The room became quiet. Several instructors exchanged nervous looks. Most had heard the name before. Very few actually knew what it meant. The older instructor slowly exhaled before answering. "Protocol Omega was created after the first incident. The academy's founders realized conventional containment methods would never be enough if another synchronization event occurred. They built a final safeguard." The younger instructor frowned. "What kind of safeguard?" The older instructor hesitated before answering. "A weapon." Silence filled the room. The younger instructor stared in disbelief. "A weapon capable of stopping that thing?" The older instructor looked toward the battlefield. Toward Huang. Toward the pressure continuing to distort reality itself. His expression darkened.

"Not stopping."

The younger instructor's confusion deepened.

"What do you mean?"

The answer came quietly.

"I mean killing."

Far beneath the academy, ancient machinery continued awakening. Deep underground, enormous chambers illuminated one after another. Forgotten reactors are activated. Massive energy conduits began transporting power throughout hidden sections of the facility. Systems dormant for centuries came online. Within the deepest chamber, something enormous rested beneath countless layers of reinforced metal. Ancient. Silent. Waiting. A mechanical voice echoed through the darkness.

"Protocol Omega initialization sequence beginning."

Lights illuminated gradually. Massive structures emerged from the shadows. Weapons. Thousands of them. Energy cannons. Containment arrays. Reality anchors. Technology so advanced it seemed almost impossible. At the center stood a single colossal construct. Humanoid in shape. Large enough to rival skyscrapers. Its surface was covered in ancient runes while enormous armor plates protected its body. For centuries, it had remained motionless. Forgotten. Waiting for a disaster severe enough to justify its existence. Slowly, power began flowing through its systems. One after another, glowing lines appeared across its body. Deep within the construct, ancient mechanisms started moving for the first time in generations.

Back inside the synchronization space, Huang suddenly felt another ripple spread across existence. This one felt different. Stronger. Closer. The Void Sovereign immediately turned its head. Its glowing eyes narrowed.

"One has awakened."

The words instantly alarmed Huang. Before he could ask another question, the synchronization space suddenly shook. Not from the breaking chains. Not from the awakening. From something else entirely. Something external. A pulse spread through the darkness. Ancient. Powerful. Unfamiliar. The Void Sovereign became completely still. Then, for the first time, Huang saw genuine surprise on its face.

A distant voice echoed across the synchronization space.

Deep.

Ancient.

Malevolent.

And impossibly old.

"I found you."

The darkness trembled. Every remaining chain surrounding the Void Sovereign rattled simultaneously. Huang's heart nearly stopped because the voice had not come from the Void Sovereign. It had come from outside. From somewhere far beyond the synchronization space. Far beyond the academy. Far beyond humanity itself. The voice spoke again, clearer this time, carrying an ancient amusement that made Huang's skin crawl.

"Void Sovereign."

The synchronization space shook violently. Fragments of darkness shattered around Huang while entire sections of the void distorted beneath the pressure of the voice alone. The giant figure slowly rose to its full height. Its glowing eyes burned brighter than ever before. For the first time since awakening, the Void Sovereign looked angry.

"Impossible."

The distant voice laughed.

The sound echoed through reality itself.

"Did you truly believe eternity would hide you?"

Cold fear spread throughout Huang's soul because whatever was speaking—whatever had found the Void Sovereign—even the Void Sovereign regarded it as a threat. Across the synchronization space, ancient chains continued breaking while the darkness trembled beneath mounting pressure. Somewhere far away, beyond countless stars and forgotten civilizations, an ancient entity drifted through the darkness between galaxies. Its eyes glowed crimson. Its smile widened. Entire star systems seemed insignificant compared to its presence. It had searched for ages. It had waited through the rise and fall of civilizations. It had watched history itself pass by. And now, after countless centuries, it had finally found what it was looking for.

The Void Sovereign had been discovered.

And for the first time in countless ages—

The hunt had begun.
