The next day, under Azula's care, Kahn performed an out-of-body journey.
East, South, West, and North also transformed into the Nike in their spiritual form, carrying Kahn directly and openly as they flew out of the Imperial City courtyard, unnoticed by anyone.
In their spiritual state, unbound by physical rules, Nike were like fish in water—shooting across the sky like golden meteors as they rapidly approached their destination.
"Uncle Iroh… are you saying Kahn will bring his divine friends to pick me up?" Zuko asked, half believing, half doubting.
"It just sounds a bit unreliable."
Although Zuko knew that Iroh and Kahn had maintained communication in the Spirit World over the years—and that he himself occasionally used Iroh as a medium—he still had no direct experience with spirits, gods, or the Spirit World.
He couldn't see souls, couldn't enter the Spirit World, and had never personally witnessed any beings beyond the mortal realm.
Everything he knew came from Iroh's mouth.
In fact, at first, he even suspected Iroh had fallen ill and was hallucinating, which worried him for a long time.
"This time you'll have the chance to see them," Iroh chuckled. "You might even have the opportunity for very intimate contact with a deity. Truly enviable."
"But remember, when facing a deity—"
"You must maintain respect and friendliness. I know, Uncle. You don't have to keep nagging me," Zuko sighed helplessly as he refilled Iroh's teacup, trying to quiet him.
They were seated on the second floor of a small town teahouse by the window, observing the street below in case soldiers from the Fire Nation appeared.
Both were disguised. Zuko even wore a bamboo hat to cover the burn on his left eye.
Iroh smiled, ready to lecture him more, but suddenly—
A brilliant golden light appeared at the horizon. It grew rapidly from a pinprick into the form of a magnificent divine bird streaking across the sky.
On its back sat a lone figure—radiant and otherworldly.
Iroh's eyes instantly lit up.
"They're here!"
Zuko blinked, confused, but Iroh didn't waste time. His spirit left his body and ascended above the teahouse, waving to Kahn. Kahn immediately spotted him.
Seeing Iroh, Kahn brightened with a genuine smile. He urged the Nike faster and flew up beside him.
"Long time no see, Uncle Iroh."
Iroh froze for half a second before breaking into a familiar warm smile.
"Long time no see."
Then he bowed to the Nike. "Thank you for your help."
Nike shifted back into East, South, West, and North, the four little ones chiming in unison.
"Remember to treat us to cake!" ×4
"Hahahaha, of course!"
After brief greetings, Iroh returned to his body, and Kahn entered the teahouse with Southeast Northwest. At last, Kahn saw Zuko again.
Zuko had grown taller, his posture straighter, his earlier childishness mostly faded.
His eyes no longer held naïve innocence but steady composure and determination.
Though Ozai was a bastard, he did have good looks, and Ursa was a renowned beauty.
Zuko had inherited the best traits of both—handsome, with a gentle undertone—a striking young man.
But the harsh, dark-red burn scar across his left eye disrupted that harmony. It was deep, brutal, unmistakable—a reminder of Ozai's cruelty and Zuko's suffering.
Seeing the scar, Kahn's mood darkened. His desire to kill Ozai grew even stronger.
Still, Zuko's presence showed maturity he never had as a boy.
"Uncle! You could've warned me first— I thought you fainted!" Zuko scolded.
"Alright, alright, not important." Iroh waved him off. "What is important is—look!"
Zuko stared at the empty space Iroh pointed to.
"…Uncle. I can't see anything."
Kahn facepalmed. Iroh awkwardly scratched his head—his terrible joke talent striking again.
Kahn's mind stirred, and a voice echoed directly into Zuko's head:
'Long time no see, Zuko.'
Spiritbending didn't rely on chi, so even in spirit form, it worked flawlessly.
"Ah!" Zuko jolted. Then, realizing whose voice it was, he brightened.
"Kahn? I can hear you!"
'It's me. Spiritbending can transmit my voice directly into your mind.'
"That's Spiritbending too? Spirits… you've learned so much." Zuko marveled, then suddenly fell silent.
Kahn snickered, 'Don't try. I can speak into your mind, but I can't hear what you're thinking.'
"Then how do you know what I was trying to do?"
'Zuko… your intentions are written on your face.'
Zuko froze, then burst out laughing. Despite all the years apart, hearing Kahn's familiar tone felt like they'd never been separated.
"Kahn, long ti—" Zuko paused, glancing at the empty air.
"…No, I'll say it properly when we actually meet. Talking to empty space makes me feel insane."
Kahn laughed. 'Alright, we'll save it for later.'
Iroh watched them with a warm smile. Soon—once Ozai fell—they would be able to reunite freely.
To avoid attention, they left town and entered the wilderness. There, Nike revealed Their true divine form.
Zuko froze—speechless.
He had never seen a Spirit before. And even among Spirits, Nike were breathtaking—like living embodiments of sacred myths.
Zuko bowed deeply.
"Thank you for helping us, revered deity."
Nike answered calmly:
"I am merely helping my friend."
Kahn smirked proudly and stroked Their feathers, giving Them a thumbs-up. Nike raised Their head with dignified pride.
