Chapter 123 - The Hug Of The Night

The silence after his words lasted longer than either of them expected.

Not because there was tension.

Because there wasn't.

Not anymore.

For the first time that night, the space between them felt honest.

Aanya sat very still.

Looking at him.

Not trying to figure him out.

Not trying to find hidden meanings.

Just seeing him.

And somehow that felt more intimate than anything else had.

Sagnik looked exhausted.

Not physically.

The kind of tiredness that came from carrying something alone for too long.

The kind that appeared only after someone finally put the weight down.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Aanya stood up.

Slowly.

Without announcing it.

Without making a decision dramatic.

Sagnik's eyes followed her automatically.

A small crease appeared between his brows.

Confusion more than concern.

"Aanya—"

But she didn't answer.

Not immediately.

She crossed the short distance between them.

Only a few steps.

Then stopped directly in front of him.

Close enough to see the uncertainty in his expression.

Close enough to see him preparing to overthink whatever she was about to do.

That almost made her smile.

Almost.

Instead, she just shook her head slightly.

As if telling him not to.

Not this time.

Not now.

And before he could ask anything else—

she wrapped her arms around him.

Lightly.

Carefully.

No force.

No urgency.

No desperation.

Just warmth.

Just presence.

Just enough to say:

I'm here.

Sagnik froze.

Not dramatically.

Not because he wanted to move away.

Because for a second, he genuinely didn't know what to do.

Aanya felt it immediately.

The hesitation.

The surprise.

The way his body remained completely still.

And that only made her hold him a little more firmly.

Not tighter.

Just certain.

She rested her cheek briefly against his shoulder.

Then spoke quietly.

The words almost disappearing into the room.

"You know..."

A pause.

"I think you've been doing all the hard parts by yourself for so long..."

Another pause.

"...that you forgot you're allowed not to."

Sagnik closed his eyes.

Just for a second.

Because somehow that sentence landed harder than everything else tonight.

Aanya continued softly.

"I'm not asking you to figure everything out tonight."

Her voice remained calm.

Steady.

Gentle.

"I'm not asking you to decide anything."

A small breath.

"I'm not even asking you to stop being scared."

That finally made something in him loosen.

Just slightly.

Enough for the tension in his shoulders to fade.

Enough for him to stop holding himself together so tightly.

Aanya smiled faintly against his shoulder.

"You can take your time."

The words settled between them.

Simple.

Honest.

No conditions attached.

No expectations hidden inside them.

Just truth.

"And for the record..."

Her smile grew a little.

"...I'm not exactly planning on disappearing."

A quiet laugh escaped him then.

Small.

Unsteady.

Real.

The first genuine one of the night.

And somehow that felt like progress.

Not because anything had been solved.

But because for the first time, neither of them was carrying it alone.

After a few moments, Aanya finally loosened her arms.

Not rushing to step away.

Not clinging either.

Just letting the moment breathe.

When she looked up, Sagnik was already looking at her.

Something softer lived in his expression now.

Not certainty.

Not resolution.

Just relief.

A rare thing on him.

A vulnerable thing.

And Aanya realized she had never seen it this clearly before.

Neither of them said anything.

They didn't need to.

Because some answers weren't spoken.

Some answers were simply staying.

And tonight, that was enough.
