Chapter 121 - You Shouldn't Be Out This Late

Sagnik didn't hear the knock at first.

Not because it was loud or soft.

Because for a moment, his mind didn't connect it to anything real.

It came again.

Quieter this time.

More certain.

He stood up slowly.

Not immediately opening the door.

That small delay wasn't hesitation.

It was recognition forming too late.

When he finally opened it—

Aanya was standing there.

Not dressed for anything special.

Not looking dramatic.

Not smiling.

Just present.

Like she had stepped out of the night and decided not to explain why.

For a second, neither of them spoke.

That silence was different from all the others today.

Because this one had intention behind it.

Sagnik's eyes stayed on her.

Not surprised.

Not relaxed either.

Just… steady

.

Aanya broke it first.

"I couldn't sleep," she said.

Simple sentence.

No decoration.

No justification.

Sagnik didn't move aside immediately.

He just looked at her for a moment longer than necessary.

Then stepped back slightly, letting her in.

Aanya walked inside without waiting for permission.

That itself felt important.

The door clicked shut behind her.

And suddenly the room felt smaller.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Sagnik didn't ask why she was there.

Not yet.

He knew if he asked too early, the answer would become something they both weren't ready to carry.

Instead, he said quietly—

"You shouldn't be out this late."

Aanya turned toward him.

"I know."

That was it.

No defense.

No argument.

Just acknowledgment.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because it meant she had still come.

She looked around briefly.

The room was exactly what she expected.

And also not.

Too organized.

Too still.

Like nothing ever happened here that couldn't be controlled afterward.

She sat down on the edge of the chair near his desk.

Not his bed.

Not close.

But not far either.

Sagnik stayed standing for a moment.

Then leaned lightly against the table.

Not too casual.

Not too rigid.

A controlled distance.

A pause settled between them again.

But this time it wasn't empty.

It was full of everything they hadn't said since the lift.

Aanya finally spoke.

"Do you ever think about things too much?"

Sagnik almost smiled at that.

Almost.

"Yes."

Aanya nodded slightly.

As if that answer was expected.

Another pause.

Then she added, softer—

"I couldn't stop thinking."

That made his expression shift.

Very small.

Very brief.

But real.

He didn't ask what exactly.

Because he already knew it wasn't one thing.

It was everything layered.

He exhaled slowly.

"You didn't have to come here," he said.

Aanya looked at him directly now.

"I know."

Silence again.

But this one wasn't avoidance.

It was pressure.

Slow, steady pressure building in a closed space.

Sagnik pushed himself off the table slightly.

Then stopped.

Like he had almost chosen to move closer—but didn't allow himself to complete it.

Aanya noticed.

Of course she did.

Her voice came quieter.

"…you're doing it again."

Sagnik frowned slightly.

"Doing what?"

"That thing."

She gestured faintly between them.

"Choosing where you're allowed to be."

That landed too close.

Too accurate.

He didn't deny it.

Not immediately.

And that silence between acknowledgment and refusal became the first real crack of the night.

Outside, the campus was still.

Inside, neither of them moved away.

And neither of them moved closer.

But something had already crossed the distance that both of them had been carefully maintaining all day.
