Chapter 117 - COTE 117: Evil Deeds

The final day of the forest school—that is, the day the special exam would decide the superiority or inferiority of the groups—had arrived.

Each large group gathered in its designated classroom. After breakfast was provided, the explanation of the special exam began.

The exam contents were four: "Zazen," "Speech," "Ekiden," and "Written Test."

Each one was a test that made use of what they had learned over the past week.

The first-years would begin with zazen. Next came the written test in the classroom. Then the ekiden, and finally the speech.

To keep the exams running smoothly, the first-years had already assembled at the zazen site.

Cleaning duty was exempted that morning, so the schedule was immediately intense—exam start right away.

"Now we will begin the zazen exam. There are two scoring criteria: etiquette and movement upon entering the dojo, and whether there is any disturbance during zazen itself. After zazen ends, remain in your respective classrooms until further instructions."

The teacher finished explaining to the first-year boys and immediately began calling students.

They were summoned in gojūon order, with multiple people tested at once, so the exam progressed smoothly.

Among them, Kamukura was called fairly early.

He had grown used to the extreme of nothingness over the past week, his senses sharpened to the point of boredom, yet he performed zazen perfectly.

(This is boring. The only thing gained in this state is extreme concentration. Is there any meaning in polishing my talent any further?)

Before closing his eyes, he observed the students in his own group. None had made any major mistakes; everyone was carrying out zazen exactly as practiced.

Even Koenji, Kamukura's sole point of concern, was fine.

He sat in an impeccably beautiful posture, executing flawless zazen without a single strand out of place.

After that, the exams flowed on like an assembly line, and the zazen portion concluded.

Following the supervising teacher's instructions, the first-years headed toward the designated classroom for the written test.

"Kamukura-san, I did pretty well!"

On the way, Ishizaki spoke up in high spirits.

"I glanced over it lightly, but your form was quite clean. I think you can aim for a high score."

"Nice! Got the Kamukura-san stamp of approval!"

"Please keep that momentum for the next written test. No anxiety, right?"

"Yeah! With your teaching plus me and Komiya studying on our own so we wouldn't drag anyone down, leave it to us!"

There was no lie in Ishizaki's pure words. He shot a smug grin toward Komiya.

The two of them had been working hard for the real exam behind Kamukura's back.

Kamukura understood that instantly. The study methods he had established had paid off—he felt that much—but no satisfaction accompanied it.

"The written test will begin once everyone is assembled. You can assume the rules are the same as the usual midterms and finals."

Upon arriving at the designated classroom, the next supervising teacher explained the exam precautions.

There were no questions until the end; it was exactly like a normal test.

Once he confirmed everyone was present, answer sheets were distributed as described.

"Then, begin the test."

All at once the sound of papers turning became the sound of writing.

Kamukura read through the entire question sheet.

Nothing particularly noteworthy. If they had grasped the essentials, everyone could score full marks without fail.

At this level, no one in the group would fall below ninety percent.

With that prediction in mind, he moved his pencil to the correct answers.

While the first-year boys headed for the ekiden exam, the third-year girls were taking theirs in the order of speech then ekiden.

Everyone was seriously engaged in the special exam.

For the third-years, only a few special exams remained. The chances to aim for a higher class could now be counted on one hand.

Amid all that, Tachibana from Third-Year Class A was working harder than anyone else—and she had begun to feel something off about her own group's movements.

(…Everyone really is serious.)

Starting with the person in charge, Inogari, every member was desperately completing the ekiden.

Tachibana's group had placed second in the ekiden. They hadn't taken first, but it was more than high enough.

Yet that very fact made it feel strange.

The members who had tried to kick her out just days ago were now ignoring her completely and focusing solely on the exam instead of trying to sabotage her.

(Horikita-kun.)

Tachibana wiped her sweat with a towel, hiding the smile that kept creeping onto her face.

This was thanks to Horikita.

Just as he had declared, Horikita had saved her. She believed that.

(…Focus. The exam is still going. We don't know what might happen until the very end.)

Suppressing the urge to lose herself in daydreams, Tachibana pulled herself together.

All that remained were the written test and zazen.

Unlike the first-years, zazen after physical exertion could be tough on the legs for some people.

That was exactly why she couldn't let her guard down.

With renewed determination, Tachibana began moving with her group.

Kamukura's group finished the ekiden and speech without issue and completed the special exam.

The long special exam drew to a close, and all students were gathered in the gymnasium.

They had safely secured first place in the ekiden—each person running the 1.2 km with everything they had, posting excellent times and crushing the competition for an overwhelming top spot.

Kamukura had been certain of first place.

Every exam had been flawless; within the first-years, their group boasted overwhelmingly perfect execution.

This exam was decided by average scores, but the third-years were led by Horikita Manabu's group. Even if the second-years dragged their feet a little, there was more than enough margin to cover it.

"Everyone, thank you for your hard work over the eight days of forest school. Although the exam contents differ, this is a special exam held only once every few years. Overall, this year's results were evaluated higher than the previous special exam. The main factor is undoubtedly the excellent teamwork you all displayed."

The elderly man in charge of the forest school smiled from the gymnasium stage as he made the announcement.

"Now, without further delay, we will reveal the results."

Every student sensed the drop in his tone.

The moment of truth had come. Win or lose, this was the end.

"In this special exam, every single group—both boys and girls—exceeded the borderline set by the school."

The elderly man paused deliberately before continuing.

The announcement drew relieved sighs from the entire student body.

Yet among them were those who did not rejoice at the result.

The most obvious were the students of Third-Year Class B, wrapped in a sullen, hostile atmosphere.

"…Miyabi."

"Yeah, I'll have to apologize to Ishikura-senpai and the others."

Student Council President Nagumo answered the seemingly concerned Asahina in a light tone.

His expression was not one of regret but of refreshing clarity.

There was the bitterness of defeat. But more than that, Horikita Manabu—the senior who had been more popular and more capable than him—had acknowledged him and fought him.

That fact alone made Nagumo happier than anything else.

"We will now announce the overall first place for the boys' groups. Only the name of the third-year person in charge will be read. Points will be distributed later as rewards to all first- through third-year students belonging to that group."

After the explanation, the elderly man slowly read the names.

"Third-Year Class C, the group led by Ninomiya Kuranosuke-kun takes first place."

Immediately afterward, cheers of joy rose from some of the third-years.

Among them was the rare sight of Horikita Manabu smiling.

After that, the groups from second place down to last were announced.

Nagumo Miyabi's group placed third.

Everyone thought that would quiet Nagumo down.

"Next, we will announce the overall first place for the girls' groups. First place goes to the group belonging to Ayase Natsu-san of Third-Year Class C."

When the announcement resumed, joyful voices rose from some of the girls this time.

The first-years belonging to Ayase's large third-year group were mainly from the small group whose leader was Horikita Suzune of Class D.

Just as she had declared, she had secured the means to repay Kushida's debt.

Like the boys, the rankings from second to last were announced in order.

Shiina's group narrowly took second, Manabe's group took third, and Class C had gained an enormous number of points.

Continuing on, fourth was the group mainly from Class B, fifth mainly from Class A, and last was the group made up of leftovers.

Nagumo.

Once the ranking announcement finished, Horikita called out to Nagumo.

It wasn't that all announcements had ended; this was currently the time for returning the phones. Important administrative notices regarding this exam were also being prepared.

"Congratulations on securing first place, Horikita-senpai."

Nagumo offered his congratulations from the bottom of his heart.

"It's your loss."

"Yes, it's my defeat."

Nagumo admitted it with a completely refreshed expression. When he directed a straight gaze filled with respect toward Horikita, Horikita was finally able to relax, certain that Nagumo had no intention of doing anything further.

"You did well to pull back. This way, the damage didn't spread to people who had nothing to do with it."

"Well, I'm the loser this time. I'll obediently accept the winner's demands."

Seeing how honest Nagumo was being, Horikita smiled faintly as well.

"However, I do have quite a few complaints about the strategy you used this time. It's over now, but still."

"Aaah~ I get it. I'll listen properly next time, but please cut me some slack for now. I'm still pretty heartbroken about losing. Besides, you and I have fundamentally different ways of thinking after all. Even if we understand each other's positions, we can't fully agree."

"I figured as much. Still, I'd like to voice at least one of those complaints."

"Eeeh~, seriously, please let me off the hook. You managed to get close with Tachibana-senpai, didn't you?"

"…That and this are two different matters."

The two spoke like friends, completely forgetting their positions. Those watching felt relieved at the sight. Relieved that Nagumo's ambition had finally subsided, and at how amicable the two of them seemed. In a special exam that had produced so many expulsions, this outcome brought relief to the entire student body, regardless of personal gain or loss.

"With this, we've obtained a massive amount of class points. My position has dropped considerably, but what do you plan to do moving forward?"

The scene changed. Ryuuen spoke to Kamukura, who was calmly observing the aftermath of these results.

This time, the boys' overall rankings were: 1st place a group centered around Class C, 2nd centered around Class A, 3rd a mixed group, 4th centered around Class B, 5th centered around Class D, and last place another mixed group. As a result, First-Year Class C had earned 1.08 million Private Points and 336 Class Points, along with a large amount of points from the girls' side as well. Because of this, Kamukura—who had led the class this time—had likely shifted in status from Ryuuen's right-hand man to an equally capable second leader.

"I won't step forward any more than necessary. Once things cool down and I've laid low for a while, I'll return the leader position to you."

"I don't want it. I'll take it back with my own hands."

"Then that means Class C will be operating without a leader from now on."

"Kuku, having them fight the special exams like that sounds pretty interesting. I'm a little curious to see how far those guys can go without me or you around."

"It feels a bit early, but as an experiment it might be worth trying."

At present, if Class C with no leader faced a special exam, defeat would be almost guaranteed. If they lost, they would naturally turn to either Kamukura or Ryuuen. Then it would come down to who received more support. Kamukura placed the tiniest grain of expectation into that all-too-obvious outcome.

"Well, let's discuss the details another day."

Kamukura ended the conversation with Ryuuen and stepped away from the First-Year Class C group. While the entire student body was basking in the joy of the exam's conclusion, Kamukura deliberately drew attention to himself as he walked straight up to Horikita Manabu and Nagumo Miyabi.

"You seem to be in an exceptionally good mood, Nagumo Miyabi."

His completely flat tone made it difficult to read any emotion, causing the people around both men to instinctively raise their guards.

"You know what this is about, correct?"

"Yeah, the bet, right? Here's my phone."

Nagumo Miyabi accepted the outcome cleanly, offering no excuses. The phones had already been returned earlier. Kamukura quickly received 1 million Private Points from Nagumo and concluded the matter. With this, Kamukura's personal points had reached approximately 2 million. Enough to allow for some luxury.

"Hey, Kamukura. Was I strong?"

As Kamukura looked at the points, Nagumo Miyabi suddenly muttered.

"If we're speaking of overall ability, then yes—you are strong. Your leadership skills, charisma, and sharp mind are all exceptionally high for a high school student."

"…After I asked, that almost sounds like sarcasm."

"No, this is a completely fair assessment."

Kamukura pocketed his phone and looked Nagumo Miyabi straight in the eyes. The blazing confidence had sunk, yet his gaze still burned with strength as he stared back. Deep within those pupils, a fiercely shining will had locked onto Kamukura as its target.

"I told you before—after Horikita-senpai, you're next. Next time I won't let my guard down at all."

During this exam, Kamukura had acted as Horikita's hands and feet. And Nagumo had surely learned once again just how powerful Izuru Kamukura truly was. Yet even after witnessing that gap in strength, Nagumo still possessed the courage not to break. As a man who had climbed to the position of Student Council President through his own power, his resolve was anything but ordinary. However—

"Not let your guard down, huh."

Kamukura spoke the words with utter indifference. His entire aura made it painfully obvious how unbearably bored he was with the current situation.

"...─Do you truly believe this is the end?"

Kamukura declared in an ice-cold voice.

"…What?"

"I'm asking why you think this exam will end so perfectly with a happy conclusion like this."

Not just Nagumo, even Horikita—who had cooperated with him—couldn't comprehend what Kamukura was saying. Kamukura had worked relentlessly, without any compromise, to save Tachibana. Despite that, it still wasn't over. His emotionless eyes, as if looking at an insect, were fixed on Nagumo.

"Kamukura, you…"

"I kept my promise to you, Horikita Manabu. However, from this point onward, this is my own personal objective."

"What are you talking about? What exactly do you plan to do to Nagumo?"

Kamukura offered no answer. Instead, he shifted his gaze toward the stage in the gymnasium. A man holding a microphone was just about to step onto the platform. Nagumo looked at the man ascending the stage—the principal of this school. This person carried far more authority than the elderly man from earlier and exuded a heavy atmosphere. The principal, now standing on the gymnasium stage, had sharp eyes. Everyone immediately sensed that something important was about to begin.

"Everyone, thank you for your hard work on the special exam. Originally we were supposed to return home once preparations were complete, but there is an important announcement regarding this exam, so I will take this opportunity to inform you all."

The principal's voice echoed throughout the gymnasium through the microphone. The students were exhausted after the long eight-day special exam and likely wanted to voice complaints. However, the unusual atmosphere surrounding the principal made everyone listen attentively. In the midst of that silence, Nagumo was struck by an indescribable sense of dread. Combined with his defeat in the special exam, it was the perfect setup to amplify that anxiety. And the next words turned that unease into cold reality.

"I will now make an announcement to everyone. It has come to light that Student Council President Nagumo was involved in bullying during this exam."

A shocking revelation shook the entire hall. The gymnasium filled with students unable to hide their astonishment, and all eyes instantly focused on the Student Council President, Nagumo Miyabi. Even Nagumo himself was stunned speechless, his mind going blank.

"The incident originated during this special exam. It has been discovered that Student Council President Nagumo carried out systematic bullying against Tachibana Akane-san of Third-Year Class A with the goal of forcing her expulsion. This crime was deliberate and executed with clear malicious intent."

"W-Wait a second!"

As the principal continued addressing the crowd, Nagumo tried to interrupt.

"What is the meaning of this? I——"

"——Student Council President Nagumo, do you admit to your involvement in the bullying?"

Before Nagumo could finish, the principal cut him off. The forceful tone caused Nagumo to falter for a moment, but he quickly realized rebuttal wasn't allowed and shook his head.

"Student Council President Nagumo, during this exam you attempted to have Tachibana Akane-san expelled by exploiting the exam rules, correct?"

"…Yes."

This itself wasn't anything bad. It was simply kicking someone down for the sake of profit. In this school, there would be no punishment for that.

However, when it came to bullying, the story was entirely different.

"In that case, you instructed students—primarily from Third-Year Class B—to bully her. There is no mistake about this, correct?"

"No, I never gave any orders to bully anyone."

Naturally, Nagumo played dumb.

However, his complexion was terrible. In front of the entire student body, his plan was being exposed like a public execution. For a person in his position, it was an extremely unpleasant situation.

"Why are you lying?"

"I'm not lying."

"Is that so? Then let's verify it."

The principal signaled to one of the teachers standing at the edge of the gymnasium. A female teacher then stepped up onto the stage.

"Teacher, you witnessed the scene where Inogari Momoko-san's group was bullying Tachibana Akane-san, correct?"

"Yes. They were carrying out acts that clearly constituted bullying in places hidden from us teachers. Without the cooperation of students from the same group, the school would never have been able to witness it."

The female teacher answered calmly.

This was evidence presented directly by the school. No one had any room to refute her words.

Nagumo looked not only at the teacher who had ascended the stage, but also at the other teachers lined up along the side. None of them showed any sign of surprise. They were all calmly watching over the situation, as if they had known this development was coming.

Nagumo Miyabi was no fool.

He sensed the atmosphere and immediately understood that someone had dragged the school into this. And he already had a clear idea who that someone was.

"...─Kamukura, this was your doing!!!"

A voice brimming with rage echoed throughout the gymnasium.

However, the only response was a pair of colorless eyes staring back. Kamukura simply looked at Nagumo without saying a word.

"…What did you do, Kamukura?"

Horikita asked sharply, fixing Kamukura with a piercing gaze.

"It's quite simple. I prepared and submitted evidence of his wrongdoing."

The evidence Kamukura had prepared was nothing more than having Ichinose cooperate to let the school witness several instances of the bullying firsthand.

It was that simple, yet against crude methods like this, it served as an incredibly powerful trump card.

Evil deeds only remain hidden as long as they stay in the shadows. Unless one is some kind of chivalrous thief, anyone committing wrongdoing will do so in secret. Expose it, and it's checkmate. A natural weakness.

And he had done all of this without telling a single person, without letting anyone catch on, and finished the exam. As a result, word of the bullying had reached the school. There had been no reason to announce it beforehand.

"…What was your objective?"

Horikita Manabu asked, his sharp gaze locked onto Kamukura.

"To strip him of his power. That was my goal for this exam."

Kamukura stated his objective clearly.

That goal was to eliminate the greatest force Nagumo possessed—his authority.

Why do it? There were two major reasons.

The first was that Nagumo, who had betrayed his trust, had simply become boring to Kamukura.

The second was to ensure that Nagumo wouldn't hold any troublesome power when he extracted points from him later.

In other words, this was all preparation with an eye toward the 800 million points.

"Allow me to continue. Student Council President Nagumo, despite the presentation of this evidence, are you still claiming that you did not order any bullying?"

The principal pressed Nagumo further, piling on the pressure.

However, Nagumo only showed a slightly pained expression and did not falter in his response.

"…Please wait a moment. First of all, why am I being implicated in this? This bullying incident occurred among the third-years, didn't it? It has nothing to do with me, a second-year.

Besides, the evidence only proves that bullying took place. I don't believe it connects to me in any way."

"Indeed, with only this evidence, that would be true. However, the school has already grasped the full scope of the strategy you devised for this exam, which is why we are naming you here.

Moving forward, after questioning the small group led by Inogari Momoko-san—excluding Tachibana Akane-san—we will decide their punishment. Once their connection to you comes to light, what do you think will happen? If it turns out you were lying, an even heavier punishment will be imposed."

"So in short, you're urging me to confess."

Nagumo understood. This situation could not be overturned.

The school had already figured out the plan he had orchestrated. That was why they were treating him as a suspect.

If lies were discovered after questioning Inogari and the others who received punishment, the penalty would only grow heavier. It would simply add more crimes to his name.

"…I will follow the instructions."

The smile had vanished completely. With a haggard, despair-filled expression, Nagumo spoke.

His once-confident face was nowhere to be found.

"Understood. The specific details of the punishment will be decided after questioning Inogari-san and the others, so I cannot announce them yet. However, I will first reveal one punishment that has already been finalized."

The principal calmly continued.

And it was the natural consequence—one that would be the most devastating announcement possible for the entire student body.

"...─Second-Year Class A, Nagumo Miyabi. You are hereby stripped of your position as Student Council President."

Silence spread throughout the gymnasium.

The shocking truth left everyone speechless.

It took roughly the same amount of time as it did for all the students to fully process what they had just heard.

Nagumo slowly turned only his head toward the person responsible for this outcome.

The smile he had worn while talking with Horikita had vanished, and his once ambitious eyes had turned as lifeless as a dead fish.

"Boring."

Without the slightest mercy, Kamukura turned his back.

There was no need to explain who the winner and who the loser was.
